Re: Hot Toys - MMS 253 - Guardians of the Galaxy - Groot & Rocket
Man this release has really brought the whiners out (not on here but over on other pages, particularly the Facebook groups).
Is it necessary for people to comment that they aren't going to be buying this because they are trimming down their collection or that they don't like GotG or other pointless meaningless drivel that no one cares about? (welcome to the internet)
Regarding the price for Rocket, perfectly justifiable. It's $30 more that Threezero's Tyrion Lannister figure which will be about the same scale, this is from an established high quality company who have proven themselves numerous times, well worth the extra $30.
Regarding a five pack, can't see why Hot Toys wouldn't do one. I'd buy a five pack over singles. Why? Same amount of money with extra stuff. A five pack is no more sweat off their backs than it is to produce 5 individual figures boxed up. People getting the whole team buy the set, people who don't get the individuals Hot Toys still makes the same amount of money either way.
Yep, I think the escalation in prices is really starting to upset some (not all) 'old skool' collectors and they appear to blame Marvel and Hot Toys pretty much exclusively for this (yet action figure prices, are a fraction of custom action figure and Statue prices).. I simply do not go to virtually every thread for a new Asmus (or Big Chief, or whoever) release, to complain about pricing, or the licenses involved, or the figure chosen.. if the figures do not interest me, then I pretty much do not visit or post on those threads.
Fact is, if a figure is postponed or is not in development, it is in most cases going to be down to one of three things:
A licensing issue
A genuine lack of demand, outside a relatively small hard-core fanbase (whether that fanbase likes it or not.. and there is always the custom market)
A choice between releasing a figure pretty much guaranteed to make lots of money and a figure which although popular, will not make the cash register ring as loudly.
Sadly prices are not going to sit where they were five, six seven years ago.. and Toy manufacturers have worked out their product is not quite as niche, as it used to be.. I'm so old, I remember the approximately two decades or so, when Rock concert ticket prices, hardly changed.. then the Rolling Stones worked out they could charge a great deal more.. Bam! prices rocketed, across the board, as every other successful band did the same.
However it's amusing seeing Marvel and Hot Toys attract exactly the same sort of venom, that Microsoft and Android fans reserve for Apple.
Its possible 5 packs might be a way of mitigating the cost of less popular figures in a series, but imho, it's still a sizable commercial risk that those packs simply would not sell, at the much higher price a 5 pack would have to command.
I know for a fact, I wouldn't pay the premium just for accessories, if three out of the five figures did not appeal.. chances are the two that did appeal, would be the main characters ..and I couldn't be bothered with the hassle of reselling the less popular figures on the Secondary market (possibly at a loss) just to get the extra accessories..
The only way it would work, would be if I wanted all five figures, or possibly four out of the five figures.. and to be honest even with the Iron Man license, I might find that a stretch.
