Nature wasn't on my side this weekend, unfortunately overcast/rainy daylight isn't very good, it might as well be dark. Believe me, as soon as I can get daylight I'm doing it, I actually got pissed about the sun today, it came out just around sunset but clouds kept moving in so as soon as I set the shot it was gone, the one photo a few pages back was all I could get, annoying.

So Sean, you use mostly natural daylight for your shots...am I correctly in guessing you use your PC monitor for some of that accent lighting I see you do?

Yes, for the most part, I try to use daylight anytime I'm not going for anything real dark like my Batman or Aliens work, the colors and the quality is just nicer than tungsten room lighting, and I mainly use the computer monitor for strong highlights and get that mix of light from 2 sides or also to get color because any color used in a photoshop file makes me monitor a light source of that shade.

Also, with my daylight shots, I often will use a piece of white cardboard to reflect light onto the shadowed side.

Here are some examples.

Incase the use of the term tungsten is throwing anyone, it's a term for lights that are in the yellow/orange light temperature range, very common for home lighting.

Sorry for posting TDK shots, but there were two other light styles I'll use that I don't have T2 shots employing yet.

Excellent, great tips. Photoshop colors on your monitor, never thought of that. I've previously tried putting the film on and using the light from the very scene I'm trying to recreate but what good is that if you're taking the photo on an inappropriate surface and where your bedroom and its junk are visible in the background.

They each have their advantages, daylight or the daylight monitor mix tends to be best for looking like a real person, the tungsten monitor combination makes for more arsty images.

The problem with that is, just because the scene has a certain color to it, doesn't mean it's abundant enough to creat the right glow onto a photo subject. I've trie that too and often I'll just use the color picker to grab the shade out of the shot I want and just fill a whole image with that color.

One thing you learn with photos is that sometimes your light source needs to be a lot stronger than you'd think to achieve what you're aiming for. I'm still amazed that lighting that's good enough to see things in your home is very weak for cameras compared to pro flash equipment and lighting.

Are you looking at screenshots whilst taking these photos Maul or are you just going by memory ?. Some of them look identical. :google

OUCH MAUFAN HAMMER of mad pictures has come down again and again and AGAIN!
Only way I am going to beat you and create something special is if I find those Elton John glasses in HK!

just now put the black tee shirt on my arnie,
have to say he looks alot better in this one than the gray one,
his skin tone seems to show up better in the black shirt,
he just looks bader and cooler in all black imo.
