Better late than never re the original WS
- figure the Freaks board is a place to share and all - including the foul-ups and *struggles*. So, re Bucky's sniper rifle (that wasn't even used in the film - or maybe he shot Fury with it...) anyway, from the film menu, a rifle described as a 107....
Except, yah know, hunting online through the 'bay and other 1/6 scale places, run headlong into the confusion between the M82A1 and the M107 - even gun folks are confused...the problem is what *&^%$! do you buy
- especially when the manufacturers may or may not have accurate labels and descriptions anyway. Even the current Barrett catalog has:
Tryin' to keep this short(ish) so, basically, far as I can tell, at some point the U.S. Army took the M82 and made it more field-ready, e.g. for me the big thing is the rear grip is different (re the real thing, the 107 rear grip is aluminum vs. plastic?). More details:
https://www.imfdb.org/wiki/Barrett_M82
But there are variants of this rifle all over. Thing is, it was built to be modular anyway - detachable sights, and all that. Very popular.
Just wanted the rifle in 1/6, re display. So, my experience, all via E-bay and Chinese sellers (BTW, as far as shipping/purchase goes, my experiences have been great
):
Left to right - Crossfire (metal), Z-toys (plastic), Minitoys (metal) brand. (Sorry, had the sight on the Minitoys on the wrong way.)
My opinion - Crossfire was a mistake. Sold as 1/6 scale
- way too big and heavy. Decently made metal but not a lot of real detail. IMO, it's a desk ornament, really. I don't know what this was supposed to be - a metal model, I guess. You can play with it.
Z-toys - accurate appearance, but way too fragile
cheap. Grew to hate this thing
, feel like I glued every part of it at some point.
Which is why I tried for a metal rifle, one last time...
Minitoys - my favorite so far, even if it's the wrong rifle
. All of these have problems - this one, some - but fixable - stuff. Like, the magazine doesn't fit tightly and falls out
. The holes for the legs are too big - stuff I can fix, tho.
But, besides being metal, it has some real nice details - trigger fires, metal rings, stuff actually functions. It's missing the front fold-down iron sight, but re the few pics Bucky wasn't using one anyway. (Re reading, the fold-down sights are used if your fancy optical sight breaks). This 1/6 dated as 2012 - maybe before things were made really junky a lot of the time
. Even has Barrett co. stamping:
ALL of these had problems
- inaccurate milling, or whatever. But - maybe it was different when WS came out - far as I can tell, a solid 1/6 scale model of this rifle isn't that easy to find. The real Barret rifle itself has different barrel lengths you can buy (20"/29"), and so do the scale models. Because getting a fig to hold something like this isn't that easy, I don't trust plastic at this point not to snap (unless it was an HT accessory made to go w. that figure).
All of these come w. bullets, phones, binoculars. None of them actually fire, but you can snap the rifle bolt if you want
. And they all come w. a detachable handle.
For me it wasn't supposed to turn into some huge and not-cheap quest
, just 'coz I wanted to display WS like the WS movie poster (there's still a rooted hair job for me looming
) but I'm pretty happy, finally, w. the apparent M107 I ended up with - probably will mod the rear grip, but knew that when I bought it. Real or toy, there's not a huge difference between the rifles (unless you are gun expert I guess).
Overall -
for looks only, 'coz I only got my fig to hold the rifle the way the actor does by snapping a leg and re-setting w. JB-Weld at an angle - (which was OK coz you look at this thing wrong and it breaks) - there's the Z-toys model. Have super glue on hand. Advantage tho is it is real light weight, and easily paintable.
Or try to find a sturdier metal version. Which costs a bit more. Have mini-tools on hand, especially screwdrivers/mini pliers. Also glue.
And it's kind of a gamble re what you might end up with
, tho not sure that's deliberate
. Because the history and variants of the M82/107 are pretty confusing - maybe the WS art book has more specifics. Hope this is useful re wading through e-bay, for those interested. I'd say tho, if you can grab the right 1/6 Barrett, get it, because not that easy to find. I only see it on the 'bay and Ali Express.
