Re: Hot Toys – MMS 293 & 294 Batman Returns: Batman and Bruce Wayne (Keaton) Set

I really don't care about the glider, that's a just a piece everyone will use it once and keep it in storage since they would be afraid to leave it exposed with the rubber for long extensive periods of time.

Eh, that could apply to any of the accessories really.

How many times am I going to pose Batman with the remote Batarang? Once? Twice? The signal jammer? Theres not even a Penguin to go along with it to recreate that moment. Napalm packets? No Catwoman to pose them with. Point is, it would have been nice to have the glider. Yeah, some people might not use it or leave it in the box, but so what? It still would have been a worthwhile accessory and it's the last bit that keeps this figure from being 100% complete. Maybe I would have used it once. Maybe I would have used it in some photography, maybe I would keep it displayed with it, maybe I would have looked at it once and left it in the box. Who knows. That shouldn't negate it as an accessory.

I'm not upset that it isn't included, but it would have been nice. It's the only thing that Batman is missing from an iconic moment. Would people have used it? I don't know. Do people use the eye balls more than once? Electronic features? The LED lights? I'm never one against options.

From my understanding that's for the new movies where merchandize opportunities are pretty much limitless. But back in the day it wasn't this crazy so studios didnt always asked the actors to sign likeliness rights. And even so they could still have approval rights. That's why Peter Weller, Bill Murray, Jack Nicholson characters are difficult to make for small companies. And also the story of Hot Toy's numerous attempts for Jack Sparrow head sculpts.

No, it was the same back then. Occasionally an actor would forgo upfront guaranteed payment to get a piece of the merchandising or if they had the leverage negotiate for approval rights. But it's rare. It happens now (RDJ for example has it on most his films, Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence...of course since fox opted to not get likeness rights on purpose for xmen first class and DOFP those two don't matter much)... Anyway...not every actor opts for the approvals either. Even with a merchandising piece they may not need approvals. They may be ok just getting the money (hugh Jackman often takes this route, Keaton did this a lot too). It's a lot of extra work to do the approvals.

It's actually more likely now to have the actors asking for approvals then it was back in the day. They don't get it often. But due to the 24 hour news and social media and mass access to products and info one bad merchandising item can damage an actors brand, so they want that control more then ever. But it's still a very unusal thing.

The thing with likeness is it's all subjective. One person thinks it's the worst ever, another things it spot on, one thinks it close, another thinks it doesn't even look like the person.

I'll still get the Neca Penguin. :)

Just in case people haven't seen these... Probably murderously expensive though.

Just bumping this, I think this was actually for sale on the creator's website. I have no idea if it's still available. It might be gone but there's no indication on the site. Only 1 worldwide. Just in case any freak here is interested in this dio, here's the link:

Re: Hot Toys – MMS 293 & 294 Batman Returns: Batman and Bruce Wayne (Keaton) Set

The picture came from a newspaper article. Some interesting notes were in the piece

1. Just as I suspected, there are magnets attached on the belt just like the DX09 for the grapple gun and the Penguin signal jammer/bat ski-boat truck remote ( Was never quite clear what is was for).

2. There are 3 wires in the cape for posing. Not sure if it's exactly the same piece as the DX09 or they improved on it. I don't collect with the Bale Batmen figures so I don't know if Hot Toys improved since DX09

3. The last one is the most interesting. It says that a new material is being use on the suit to prevent oil leakage or dissolving. I am not sure if I am understanding it right but the Returns suit will use a rotocast material, really soft plastic to retain the streamline sculpt of the suit and for better quality.

Really? I'm gonna have to buy this, I didn't want to at first but the more I see it, the more I need it

I'm glad they are trying to improve the rubber bodies

Just finished creating my custom (bat-signal scene) Bruce Wayne. What do you think?

I believe Sarah Michelle Gellar has approval rights.

Re: Hot Toys – MMS 293 & 294 Batman Returns: Batman and Bruce Wayne (Keaton) Set

Just a thought: Neca makes a pretty decent Penguin but it's 1/4 scale. The question is why don't they make it in 1/6 scale? Is it because it's much easier to produce it in 1/4 or is it maybe because Hot Toys still wants to make a 1/6 and somehow made agreements with DC for exclusivity on the 1/6 scale for this figure?

@Motuxmen: is this speculation possible or doesn't it work this way?

Re: Hot Toys – MMS 293 & 294 Batman Returns: Batman and Bruce Wayne (Keaton) Set

I believe Sarah Michelle Gellar has approval rights.

Yes, she does. As does the entire cast of Buffy as they had to approve sketch cards for Rittenhouse cards earlier in the year. She did not approve many and some actors rejected all of them.

Maybe likeness rights are more commonly added to the contracts these days, but back in the 90's it may have been a different story.

NECA doesn't have the license for 12", 1/6 scale figures. Last time they did was back in 2009 with their Terminator figures.

The DC license for them is limited to 1/4 scale only, mostly because of Mattel. They have had the occasional loop hole with the NES 1988 video game Batman and the Blu Ray exclusive 1989 Keaton Batman (in regular colors).

Thanks DiFabio. There's one more thing I was wondering. In previous posts there were mentions of head sculpts were the final product was different from the initially shown prototype. I was wondering if in those cases there were any official updates from Hot toys on the respective product pages or were did the updated head sculpts just appeared with the final products?
In other words, is there any chance Hot toys is going to update their product page with the head sculpt shown by J.C. Hong?

If memory serves, it is unlikely that any officially released images will show off a new headsculpt. They're not going to retract what's out there, that would just lead to confusion.

If they change a headsculpt, you'll know because it'll be reflected in the preview pics you see from certain bloggers and reviewers.

So no news anymore until release...

You mean instances where the in hand, production figure varied from the prototype without announcement? A bunch of times.

Off the top of my head,

- OC Batman V1
- TDK Batman V1
- Salvation John Connor
- T-1000
- Reeve Superman
- DX 10 Terminator
- DX 13 Terminator (GREAT surprise)
- QS 001 Batman (cowl head and faces completely revised)
- ASM Spider-Man
- ASM 2 Spider-Man
- Armor Testing Iron Man 3 Tony Stark
- Star Lord
- Rocket
- DX Bruce Lee

These changes occurred without warning. Like Haytil stated, the collecting community didn't know about said figure changes until the production figure pics showed up online.

I think Keaton HS will be much better once it comes out- no worries with me...
