Yes and no... For the Avengers it IS and always will BE the holy Marvel trinity... Cap, Iron-Man, and Thor...
Since Cap wasn't even an original member, I'm actually more inclined to include Ant-Man/Giant Man as more of an essential Avenger than Cap, though I don't include Hulk due to his short tenure. I think the only major difference between those 3 you mention and Pym/Wasp, though, is that the latter aren't very popular and didn't have their own comics over the years. They've surely been around enough over the years and have been an associated with that team as anyone else.

Agreed-- but, whenever they have to "reboot" the Avengers (and they've done it so many times in the last twenty years) it always goes back to the big three. Hank's at the core of Avengers Academy right now and Jan's death was at the climactic point of the Skrull invasion story arc, but it's the big three that are most often associated with The Avengers (I think) for most comic readers... with Hawkeye a close fourth perhaps.

That's probably true, but to me, it's akin to saying that all you need for a core JLA is Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, and a Green Lantern of some sort. When I think you need Martian Manhunter, whose identity is more being a JLAer than a solo hero (like Pym and Jan) and who has also been around since the very beginning (unlike Superman and Batman, who were only early members in name) and stayed with the team through times when others didn't (e.g., JLA Detroit and JLI).

But yes, if they actually decided to do a JLA movie, Manhunter would no doubt be an afterthought, just as Pym was for the Avengers.

As for Vision, he didn't come along until well into the series, but I wouldn't put him, Wonder Man, Scarlet Witch, Pietro, and Black Panther far behind the guys already mentioned.
