Well you should probably just boycott companies that use plastics then. By purchasing their products, you're only encouraging them.
You have a point, but I like my figures. I try to avoid buying things in plastic, but if I can't, I don't worry about it. I just know about the dangers, and if I can prevent excess exposure, I will, but if I can't, I don't. I don't worry about problems I can't fix.
There has been quite a lot of talk not too long ago about plastic leeching into bottled water, I believe especially when the bottles are re-used. Plastic outgassing I can also see but yeah, when it comes down to it, I just don't worry about it. If I get cancer ten years from now, I won't know what was behind it and it's not all going to depend on whether I drank San Pellegrino from a glass bottle or Perrier from a plastic one. Just too many environmental factors to know and most of it is genetic predisposition, unless you're someone that works with hazardous materials like lead paint or asbestos all the time. Blackthornone is an intelligent guy and I think has some points, but just for me personally, I don't see the utility in being that hyperaware of every possible source of carcinogens. I'm happy taking reasonable steps to stay healthy, exercize, eat right and whatever happens after that happens. *shrugs*
You have to extend the logic. The more toxins you are exposed to, the worse it is, so just be aware and reduce what you can. Worry won't help you because that causes stress, which also hurts you. Calmly knowing and acting appropriately isn't worrisome.
PVC is the worst plastic, so not all is that bad. I use the smell test to determine potential toxicity. If I can't smell the plastic very much, I regard it as less harmful.
By the way, Elite Higene are great plastic water bottles for bicycling that I swear have almost no plastic taste at all, and they are antibacterial. Every other plastic water bottle I have used has a noticeable to strong plastic smell, not to mention taste.
The worst problem with plastic toxicity from figures is the smell. Some action figures REALLY STINK. The Last HT Black Widow comes to mind. Man, is that a strong stench. That definitely isn't healthy to breathe.
The HT IM don't smell that much. I'm guessing the rubber ones smell a lot, too, but I don't have any with rubber bodies, only the BW with the rubberized jumpsuit.
That BW was more than I could take. I almost felt lightheaded from it. No way it's being displayed outside a sealed case.
