Nobody said they were extinct. They just weren't deployed at any of the places we saw during the OT.

I don't think this seems plausible. These guys are being hyped as the elite of the imperial army. Yet they are completely absent across the span of three films, at a time when the future of the imperial reign of power is hanging in the balance.

So looks like Force Friday is a bit of a letdown. Everything happened on Trooper Thursday ! I haven't seen anything much new today. Guess there was some more pics of Luke. But I thought the focus was on Rogue One ???? WTH ? Where's Jyn or Krennic ?

Alright, let's take a look at where we saw ST's during the three films. By no means comprehensive, but just what I remember off the top of my head.

Tatooine: Not really necessary to have elite troopers directing traffic in Mos Eisley.
On the first Death Star: They could have been there, would have been plausible to have them there, but the empire considered their planet-sized orb of death to be the ultimate power. I don't get the feeling they were expecting a small group of rebels to cause some **** and end up rescuing Leia.
Hoth: Well, they deployed their snow-specialists to Hoth. Doesn't make a lot of sense to have black-clad troopers running around a snow planet.
On the Star Destroyers: Again, it would have been plausible for them to be on the ships, but hardly mandatory. Stormtroopers are for general guard/rank and file detail. They won't use Death Troopers for marching around a ship, they'd be used for special missions.
Bespin: Now here would have been the place for Vader to bring some Deathtroopers along with him, but at the same time, Bespin was a last minute stop. If he didn't have any Deathtroopers on his ship already, he's not going to hang around for some to stop what they're doing and fly to meet him.
On the second Death Star: It certainly would have made sense for them to be lined up when the emperor arrives, if any were on the station. But at the same time, they hardly seem like a unit that would have to be hanging around on the Death Star.
Endor: The Emperor seemed pretty confident in his little trap, luring the rebels into an ambush. Could/Should he have assigned his bestest troops on the ground to make sure everything goes smoothly? In hindsight, maybe. But I think it's believe that he thought a ton of Stormtroopers would be enough to handle a handful of rebels and some teddy bears.

My point is, they're billed as an elite trooper and part of their military intelligence wing. There would not be battalions full of these guys, they'd likely operate in smaller groups and in smaller, important target missions as opposed to general battle/war. While there were thousands and thousands of Stormtroopers, we may learn there were only a dozen or two Death Troopers.

Furthermore, the galaxy we're talking about here is enormous, and while we were witness to the most crucial events of the time via the OT, those were hardly the only events/fights taking place in the galaxy. For all we know, while Vader was looking for the main rebel base by interrogating Leia, a squad of Death Troopers were on some other planet on the other side of the galaxy hunting down another group of rebels for a similar purpose.

So yeah, I'd say it's entirely plausible that, given the size of the Empire, there were lots of things going down that we didn't see happen.

:goodpost:

You make great points. Almost every skirmish in the OT started out as coincidental and minor, then quickly escalated. The Empire was pretty overconfident in almost all of them too. Like you said, they placed their priority elsewhere and let regular troops engage the rebels. More than anything, it speaks to Palpatine's poor foresight when planning. He is the one that should've taken their threat more seriously. It's a good explanation for me. The operation in Rogue One is a dire circumstance for the Empire and they literally throw everything they have at it. Or at least it appears that way.

Maybe the majority are wiped out in the final battle and what remains are converted to the Emperor's Royal Guard? Ehhh, I'm just making crap up now :)

Are the Navy Seals deployed in every armed conflict? No.

I thought the Death Troopers were bodyguards for Krennic. Like the Emperor's Royal Guard. They seem to be doing Krennic's bidding from what I've seen and guarding him when he visits the Death Star war room.

Yeah they're Krennic's body guards so simple no Krennic no death troopers, obviously most if not all characters in Rogue One are gonna bite the dust.

Our military doesn't deploy seal teams every time something goes down.

They are you just dont know it lol maybe these guys were there and we never knew lol

Yep palpatine being the buffoon that out-maneuvered the entire galaxy fails to deploy the best troops he has to recover the stolen plans of his key secret super weapon even after their general location has been identified. Lets the grunts fail the recovery instead.

After said super weapon is destroyed palpatine again guards the shield which guards the under construction death star II with similar grunts. Knowing full well the same rebels who attacked the first station will be attacking the second one.

Etc, etc, etc

Meanwhile Vader rolls with regular stormtroopers and palpatine rolls with royal guards. You know, while the death troopers are off by themselves handling the IMPORTANT stuff. The stuff that isn't in any of the movies and not even important enough to mention in passing. Know why? Because death troopers didn't exist in the OT. Sometimes you EU guys are too much.

There seem to be several little hints.

• They are all noticeably tall.
• They wear shiny black armor.
• They have a respirator built into their helmets, covering most of the face.
• They have codpieces, and belt buckles with a similar design aesthetic.

Stop it! Disney will hear you!

"Hrm what's even more betterer and coolerer than Darth Vader and Stormtroopers? How about a Darth Vader Stormtrooper? OMG START MAKING THE TOYS NOW."

:lol I'm with Turd. You can sneak one sort of troop and maybe figure out some little explanation as to why they're never to be seen again. But they did it with three and it's a little odd. What do they need all these different style troopers for anyway?

Either way, this guy seems like the Rogue One troop to get. Just picked up the Hasbro 6" version. It has lady legs.

A lot of special operations elements have specific areas of responsibilities. And just because they're deployed to a certain location doesn't mean people will even see them. So it is entirely possible that there's a good explanation why the Death Troopers aren't in the OT. Or it could just be Disney trying to make money off cool guy stuff.
