Re: Hot Toys - MMS477 / MMS478 - Star Wars Episode III: Obi-Wan Kenobi (Std & Dlx)

Not sure if it improved the likeness much, but here's my go at lightening the hair. I also added a bit of gray at the sideburns, thickened the eyebrows, and emphasized the wrinkles a bit more (along with some other paint tweaks). His mustache is actually really blonde in the movie, but I was a bit nervous taking it that far with the figure.

For some reason my camera phone still wants to make the hair look a bit dark, but hopefully you still get the idea.

Looks great!
I didn't mind going crazy with mine in the last page because it was a spare head on a custom figure.
If i have a full figure, i never do any alteration without the parts to return it to stock.
You have done well.
What colour did you use for the lightened hair?

Re: Hot Toys - MMS477 / MMS478 - Star Wars Episode III: Obi-Wan Kenobi (Std & Dlx)

Thanks. It was a range of browns, but mostly a paint called territorial beige by Apple Barrel.

Re: Hot Toys - MMS477 / MMS478 - Star Wars Episode III: Obi-Wan Kenobi (Std & Dlx)

Not really. I painted the hair a lighter brown to start, then added some dark washes to fill in the lines, then painted the brighter highlights, then added some lighter washes, and a bit of gloss... It was a pretty involved process.

Looks great. Can you give a bit more detail about the dark wash on the face? I know basically nothing about painting, wouldnt wanna mess it up or stain it or anything.

The dark wash was for the hair. For the wrinkles I just used watered down brownish paint to fill in the wrinkles. It's all acrylics so easy to remove with water or rubbing alcohol if need be.

Excellent job on the hair and beard.

Thanks. It's something that HT often overlooks. They often add those bizarre golden highlights, but a paler, fawn or tan colour would look more accurate. I've done this on ANH Luke, and ANH Han, and i reckon it helps with their respective likenesses.

First thing I did when I received my Obi was to break out a few paints and 30-40 mins later I had the mustache & beard looking much more RotS. Also I’d be the first to admit that I suck at painting but going slowly adding a few highlights (or lowlights as it were) is a simple process which adds more accuracy.

Did you use drybrushing? You only need to mask off the skin and leave the exposed hair and beard, then build it up in layers. There will be many tutorials on Youtube. Well worth checking out. It's a very subtle effect. I have done thins on several Cap headsculpts too. His hair is always a bit too dark. I also did this on the Endgame Widow's ponytail. It didn't have enough blonde in it.

Funny that you mentioned BW, she’s my next touch up project. I’m just using brushes with Vallejo paints. So far I’ve been pleased with my results!

Yeah. I just use acrylic paints. Mainly Tamiya, but i do have some Vallejo. I'm making my Widow a spacesuit, and hoping to do the same for Hawkeye. I've had to remove her repainted ponytail to fit in her space helmet, lol(But it will go back on if i need it to, as it was a separate part to begin with).

Finally, two years later, opened Obi Wan up for real. Had previously done so to take the robe off. He's a good fig.

love this. What I would go for if I had the pair. Have ordered the right guy, hope to have it in hand soon. Way waaaay later than expected but still. Never bought Obi since I disliked the strong lip game it had. But seems it can be fixed with a bit of paint skills.
