Re: Hot Toys - MMS477 / MMS478 - Star Wars Episode III: Obi-Wan Kenobi (Std & Dlx)

Kenobi has arrived, an overall amazing figure, but, to my surprise, I’m a bit let down with the tailoring on the robe. The figure has wires all over in the costume, even places I wouldn’t expect, but the hood doesn’t have one for the opening and the way the material folds is a little awkward. Other than that, amazing, love the portrait, the rest of his costume is wonderfully done, it’s shocking they seemed to design the robe solely for a hood down look.

Obi Wan arrived today, unfortunately I only had a few minutes to unbox and set him up next to Anakin.
Overall, I'm very impressed! Along with Anakin, some of the finest HT figures I own... the HS looks great at regular viewing distance, actually slightly better likeness than Anakin. The outfit looks and feels great, again, slightly better tailoring and fit than Anakin's. Didn't have time to futz with the robe, but it feels fantastic.
One thing that I found odd is that the lightsaber comes apart... The lower half can be detached. I'll have a closer look when I have time, to see if there's some reason to it, or if it's just the way it's manufactured.
Very happy to have Obi Wan and Anakin together on the shelf.

So, anybody thinking we might see a HT Grievous sometime soon? Perhaps at SDCC? I'm dreading the cost of that one though, should they make him.

Re: Hot Toys - MMS477 / MMS478 - Star Wars Episode III: Obi-Wan Kenobi (Std & Dlx)

Glad to hear your Kenobi finally arrived, Sean. Yes, the wire omission in the hood is an odd one. It's just continuing HT's regular stumbles with capes and hoods. The material is good, just needs that additional help. Keep us posted on your enhancements to the figure...really looking forward to seeing your photos.

Entity...considering how long it took the Marvel Superbot Ultron to finally sell through and if they produce Grievous in die-cast, it is doubtful HT will want to incur the R & D for a figure that does not have chances of a good return in the Asian market and that would end up being REALLY expensive (possibly $500+). I wouldn't hold my breath here (but hey, I've been wrong before). I'm fine with the Sideshow version...I think it's one of their finest figures they've done for SW. It had a few issues for some folks but overall, it's a good figure. I'll post a shot with the General and Kenobi later...

In the meantime, here's a humble farewell between Jedi...

Can't they go with K2 route with Grievous? Diecast legs and the rest plastic?

I’ll be taking a somewhat nostalgic journey with this figure.

13 years ago, I received the Sideshow Obi-Wan, and while even flawed in it’s time, there was an excitement getting it and coming off years of Hasbro 12” figures (and no Episode 3 Obi-Wan), and it felt like it feels today to get a Hot Toys figure. Long story short, for a variety of reasons I ended up selling off 90% of my Sideshow Star Wars collection, even Darth Maul, but ROTS Obi-Wan stayed, partly for lack of good collectibles of him. It’s my favorite look of him from the prequels, Ewan at his finest and I just couldn’t part with a figure with so many fond memories tied to it. It was also one of the first figures I photographed and started me on my journey. Back then, I was new to things so I didn’t have back drops and such so I would shoot figures to match film stills and photoshop them in. I plan to do some again with this figure for a bit of then and now to see the evolution. That said, you can see below clear as day. Particularly the headsculpt, this is finally the ROTS Obi-Wan I’ve dreamt of.

Wow...what a flashback indeed! As an avid Kenobi collector over the years, this HT release is especially significant to me. The Sideshow was good for it's time, despite it's flaws. I'm looking forward to seeing where you take this figure, Sean.

I'm still enjoying the heck of it myself here...

Here is the negotiator confronting the fiendish droid General Grievous...

Re: Hot Toys - MMS477 / MMS478 - Star Wars Episode III: Obi-Wan Kenobi (Std & Dlx)

I missed out on Sideshow Grievous and I just can’t bring myself to pay aftermarket, but he looks impressive. Sideshow Obi-Wan was a really nice figure in its day, the big let down was how dark his hair and beard got from the prototype.

To me, this portrait alone shines what HT is capable of. The sculpt and paint work on the beard alone are why i hoped for HT to do this figure since they got the license. His beard in this film is challenging for sculpting and painting and HT did an amazing job. If they’d just gotten all the colors right it would have been that much better. I love the paint they’re using for hair now, it has a metallic quality that lets it shine in light like real hair. They just keep pushing the limits of what can be achieved and it’s awesome to see the evolution over time.

I loved my SS OBI I hung on to it for a very long time after I sold off all my SS JEDI figures. In the end I sold it. I don’t regret it but I wouldn’t have minded keeping him the box and storing away. No plans on purchasing HT version.!

Re: Hot Toys - MMS477 / MMS478 - Star Wars Episode III: Obi-Wan Kenobi (Std & Dlx)

Anyone ever noticed this before?

I was scanning through the film last night (to decide if I wanted to buy this figure) and had to do a double take to make sure I wasn't seeing things. It's a blatant pick-up scene, that starts when Obi turns back to face Ani.

It's so bad, I can't believe I've never noticed it before:

Original on top, pick-up underneath:

Part of me doesn’t want to do away with it, but I have plans for the parts, brown shirt is going to an Old Ben kitbash, the tunic and robe to an Episode 2 kit bash, and the rest, not sure.

That's a fun before-and-after...

There was something special about those days so long gone now. An innocence and joy of what we were getting.

Really hoping for a Grievous from HT. The Sideshow one is as toyish as their other offerings, even at its time. I can only imagine a perfectly realized HT monster. Despite what you think the movies did to Grievous, he's still a good Star Wars villain and one of the more striking designs after Maul.

"It can't be"

....and that's it for playtime from me for a bit. Double-shifts all week.
Looking forward to seeing what other folks get with their cameras on this one. Keep the pics coming please!

Nice!

That hood is really high on Sidious, isn't it? He's like Elephant Man.

Re: Hot Toys - MMS477 / MMS478 - Star Wars Episode III: Obi-Wan Kenobi (Std & Dlx)

I was offered with a deal to grab a brand-new SS Grievous for only $150 (shipped) last year... but decided to skip it. Mostly due to some negative reviews in here reported of rubber deterioration issue. Hot Toys Grievous and red robe +Sith eyes Sidious ROTS are my most anticipated SW villians right now.
