With some good discounts to be had for this guy (particularly with Popcultcha), I'm interested to understand why this set doesn't seem to be particularly popular. Is it Price? Scale/size? Lack of chrome paint? Mando-fatigue? What's stopping people from picking it up?

I think the dull gray color just stands out a lot more in this larger scale than it did in 1/6. And it frankly makes it a boring figure to look at.

Plus while they have some nice presence, 1/4 figures can be awfully clunky and hard to pose with all those stiff ratcheted joints. Which makes them a lot less fun to work with.

Yeah, the non-chrome finish sure seems to have hurt this figure's popularity. It seems like a poor choice on HT's part - especially when his release was so closely followed by the chrome Beskar 1/6 Mando.

edit- I was going to give a lengthy reply but @MyenShi pretty much explained it all But of course the consensus seems to be they aren’t as popular as 1/6. I think HT’s only up to 23 releases for the QS line, and it started with the TDKR Batman a decade ago! So releases are few and far between compared to the onslaught of 1/6. Though for myself I‘m a big proponent for the 1/4 figures.

Yeah playing around with the 1/4 figures can be cumbersome, given their sheer size, and 1/6 figures are more nimble in comparison.

Agreed, the armor should’ve been more akin to the super shiny S2 Mando; while as is, the stock armor doesn’t bother me one bit, but there’s no denying updated paint would make it even better. I‘d like to think for 1/4 the OG should have come first, then the Beskar version so it could have reflected some of the attributes of the 1/6 S2 version.

At this point I think we’ll be lucky if we ever get another 1/4 Din again. It appears as though HT overestimated how much this one would sell and is sitting on a massive pile of them which does not bode well for future releases.

I would have loved a 1/4 Durasteel Mando. That’s still my favorite design of his and it’s a pity they didn’t give him more screen time in it.

So, after heaps of deliberation, I finally opened the standard version of this set that I had picked up at the most recent Popcultcha %20 off sale. At $400 AUD delivered, you can't go to wrong! But I was still on the fence.

In hand, it's an incredible set, and I have zero regrets. I'm glad I went for the standard - that base is cool, but looks too busy for me.

I need to spend some time with the figure to loosen it up (pose-wise - not the joints!) and get to know the articulation, as this is my first 1:4 scale figure from Hot Toys.

I think the non-chrome finish on the Beskar looks fine, although chrome would be nice too. The weathering on Mando's costume is excellent and the Grogu is super cute.

My only wish would have been for an eyes-closed force-using head for Grogu. And mine didn't come with any spare wrist pegs for Grogu - is this normal?

Overall, I'm very happy with the set I will post some pics once I've had more time.

Has anybody considered Rustoleum Chrome spray paint on the armor? I picked up a can of it and I’m curious but I don’t know if it’ll screw up the armor.

I think any chrome spray would end up looking way too bright and shiny on this.

Yeah I think you’re right. I tried it on something else and it’s quite bright.

I did attempt the Graphite Powder technique and it going great until I sprayed the armor parts with the 2K Glamour Coat and it got all muddled up. I’m currently stripping the paint using Simple Green.

The biggest issue I noticed before the clear coat was that the gloss black base was still visible to an extent when the light wasn’t hitting the surface. I’m wondering if black is too dark a base color for the armor parts, specifically because they’re only a quarter the size of normal parts. Perhaps a light grey gloss base would work better. I’ve considered using the chrome as well and adding the graphite powder on that as well. I’ll have to test it out on something first.

So I ended up having to completely strip and sand the armor due to the failed Graphite method. In the end I decided to go with the Rustoleum Chrome spray and I kinda wished I had done that in the first place. Or not touched it at all, honestly.

The pauldrons have a bit of texture to them and the helmet has a slight gouge next to the visor. At this point I figure I’ll just cut my losses, weather this up a bit and call it a day. It looks good from a distance and I guess that’s good enough for now.

Add some weathering to it and it be great, so far looking awesome.
