I picked up mine at local ups store today (had them hold it there) and I am happy to say my lights and sounds work. I am really liking the diecast dome. Projector lights are pretty bright but I am liking it. Not sure if I would have paid full price for this figure but I used the $50 off promo code sideshow mailed out to some people on this figure.

So if a guy like me who might be interested in R2 but has to pay full price...would you say "buy now" or maybe wait to see if it goes on sale. Would like your thoughts.....thanks

If i was going to buy a r2 right now and had a choice between full price hot toys r2 and a discounted sideshow r2, I would probably get the sideshow due to cost. I think hot toys should of had the price on this r2 lowered by $20 or $30.

I sold all my vintage Kenner 12" a few years back. I had the original remote control version as well.

Man, that photo takes me right back - that R2 toy was one of my most prized possessions as a child, absolutely loved it. Surprisingly the only SW figure at that scale tho (dozens of 3 3/4" figs mind you).
Thanks for that burst of nostalgia!

I remember getting my large scale Artoo in my Easter basket! Great memories!

Yeah, definitely, though these figures are both pretty enhanced looking on their own. I took a bunch of pics but it was hard to get anything approaching neutral since I took these with a bunch of different lights going on--detolf, room light, camera light. Gonna try again tomorrow with natural light.

Here's the original.

So quick review/impressions. I have pretty mixed feelings as I'm someone with the Sideshow R2 who actually uses the lights and some of the accessories from time to time--occasionally open up a panel for one of the arm attachments and also use the drink tray to mix it up. This Hot Toys R2 is both perfect, yet in a way boring due to the limitations. The current plan is to keep both until a Hot Toys OT version comes out and then I'll re-evaluate.

Important Pros: Amazing metal dome, girth
Important Cons: No accessories--none, always have to have the projectors lights on if you want lights (this really bugs me)

Less-Important Pros: Sounds (love them, but won't use them often)
Less-Important Cons: Blue paint on panels seems too glossy

Even weathered, I think this R2 goes really well with the Tama 3PO as it's cleaner than my Sideshow R2. I'm not sure the Tama R2 one will look as nice for the simple fact that the Hot Toys dome absolutely reads as metal (cause it is) the same way that Tama 3PO reads as metal (cause it is).

A shot like this one below shows off what happens on the shelf, the metal of Hot Toys R2 and Tama 3PO will both reflect the light in a way that paint alone likely won't, can't imagine the Tama R2 will be any different than Sideshow's in that regard.

This one also shows off the too glossy blue paint (almost looks wet sometimes):

I really like the SSC R2, but that side by side shot shows the improvement of the metal dome, really wish SSC had done that.

Good pics and review Tonton. I also have mixed feelings, but I've waited long enough for a hot toys r2, and this will do the trick unto something better comes along.

Great pics TonTon! Everybody else too. Some really nice photos in here. I picked mine up from the UPS store today and I really like it. Just about as barebones as you could possibly get, but for displaying on the shelf it looks awesome. I don't have the Sideshow to compare, but I've seen it and other than the non-metal dome I don't think it looks bad at all. At least it came with a lot of accessories.

great pics TonTon.

It seems that, so far, it is impossible to make a great R2 as a whole.

The proyector light being always on in the Hot Toys is really an issue to me.
Lights were an issue for me anyway... since I really hate the regular way they change from blue to red. Very toyish.

I think that the lights will perform best in the Tamashii, they seem to blink at an irregular pace, and the proyector light switches the last one.

But overall I believe the Hot Toys looks better...

This is a bit of a mess:

- want accessories? Sideshow
- want die cast dome? Hot Toys
- want the best accurate colours? Tamashii
- want the better proportions? Hot Toys
- want the better electronics? Tamashii

This is what we are coming to, I believe...

You forgot about the sphero, which actually has R2'd personality.

Too much analysis, guys, get the one you like and enjoy. Get them all, get a few.

I bought the HT version and I love it. Just don't leave the batteries on. :)
