I used a small bit of packing foam on his back to allow him to sit more naturally in the throne

Even the LEGO mini figure had its yellow Sith eyes..but not Hot Toys $300 dolly.

Gonna make sure this guy arrives in time for Sithmas. Seems to be becoming a little tradition now. I believe it’s the third consecutive Xmas with a Sith figure to open.

Ben looking at some photos on eBay of the throne. Looks like that defect impression on the left arm rest is a hit or miss with QC. Damn

Have the deluxe pre-ordered, but thinking about dropping it for just a regular. Chair looks nice, but he looks better standing

I do think the handsculpts are a bit of disappointment. They are about 10% oversized

Here you get two wide-open/flat "jazz hands" hands that no one would ever use

Big hands seem to be a Hot toys problem at the moment. Tarkin had huge out of proportion mitts.

Must be a Trump thing!

Aren't the Jazz hands for force lightning?

In other news, I also have invoice for deluxe from KG.

Yeah, tbh I have actually given up on the throne as a display for the figure. Part of the problem I think is that in the movie Palps is very specifically lit to separate him out from the throne and "highlight" him (bright light from side/above, special "face light".)

With the HT throne, I find that the figure kind of disappears into this big grey mass, especially under Detolf type top lighting (the throne's "roof" is problem in multiple ways, for posing and visibility.) The HT throne light above his head is very dim and only lights the top of the hood anyway. No matter what I did, he becomes this dimly lit little smiley-grandpa face amidst this huge lump of black/gunmetal (I would also say that I like the color on the Sideshow throne better than the HT one - the SSC is a bit more silvery, making it look more appealing and metallic.)

The throne is really nicely detailed (love the lights) but I also realized that it's a major commitment to display space, both size and depth, for something that isn't anywhere near as cool/iconic as - for example - the Probot or the Speeder Bike, which to me are easily worth the display space.

There's also the feet-dangling issue, which really isn't able to be covered other than moving him forward a lot and pulling the robe tight, and how seated he always seems to take on the watching-the-game or getting-lap-dance look, which combined with his smiley face looks funny.

I also think the figure itself has shortcomings and most of those shortcomings can be taken care of with a cool standing pose, so the figure actually NEEDS to be posed standing to make it work. I also find the standing pose helps the "big hands" issue too, because seated the hands are in foreground and face further back which makes the hands seem even bigger.

So the throne goes back in the box for me - I tried for nearly a week to make it work -:(. Even as a backdrop I couldn't find a way to use it without the display space commitment issue coming into play again. Tarkin's chair can be nice accent to the standing figure - the throne is just too large/deep for a background accent.

And I think the figure is really elevated greatly in a standing pose with (very) careful futzing - it goes from kind of "just okay" to something that pretty much delivers on the promise of a HT Emperor.

All in all, hot toys dropped the ball on this. I watched rotj last night specifically to watch palpatine and had the figure in front of me as I tried to futz it. The sculpt is not rotj palpatine. The smile is more revenge of the Sith. The hood drapes naturally in the movie and the hot toys hood is small. The high chair is a joke also. How could nobody have tested the chair out before it went into production? This was a $300 piece, not an $8 Hasbro toy. This and rotj luke (I bought 2) were my most anticipated figures and both were subpar. Luke because of the fat suit and lack of gloved right hands. I thought the luke prototype was great. We knew palpatine was in trouble when we saw the prototype. I just never thought he wouldn’t be able to sit in the chair.

On its own, it’s a nice figure. When looking specifically for rotj palpatine, it’s not there.
I will now go futz more once the wife goes to bed.

I suspect I'll end up feeling the same way about it as you, and putting that money towards a probe droid or speeder bike instead does seem like the smarter way to go... but at the same time the Emperor seems so blah and underwhelming on his own that it feels like I need to get the Deluxe set anyway to make it seem worthwhile. Lol

For anyone wanting parts: Toy Anxiety just broke the regular version down about an hour ago.

Oh goody - I'll be sure to pick up another dirty old man (with brown eyes?) headsculpt and robe that won't pose.:monkey3:lol

This is one of the strangest 1/6 figs I've ever encountered. I'd say it s*cks in some ways but can be made to look pretty damn cool at the same time.:dunno

I dunno - I've come to quite like the figure in standing pose. He looks good with the hood just right, head tilted and the arms/hands posed just-right. It's a huge amount of work to get it just right, but he really pops once you find that right pose. I'll try to get some pics up soon.

I removed the throne and I'm much happier with the whole display now (it's like this huge black blob has been removed, and you can actually see Palps now - he kind of disappears into the throne when seated) though I do have three Royal Guards to accomodate.:horror

All the other issues aside, I think the display real estate commitment to something that really doesn't have much iconic/coolness mojo was the key dealbreaker re: throne for me. It's recognizable but just doesn't have a whole lot to it.

Very interesting. Was underwhelmed by the Emperor alone so went with the davejames mentality and am banking on the throne to bring it all home. Also just reached out to T-Squared about some Sith eyes for old smily grandpa as he did some nice work on Anakin and I'm curious if that'll make him look a bit more evil. I don't pack my detolfs so I feel like the Emperor standing with one Royal Guard and the throne in the back shouldn't make for too busy of a shelf.

So I'm all in at the moment, but still feel like I could always back out pretty easily if needed.

Interestingly, I tried the HT Emperor in the Sideshow throne and I did think it didn't make him "disappear" as much. The HT throne is a MUCH more accurate sculpt than the Sideshow one (other than the base, where the Sideshow one is more accurate) but the HT color is more black-gunmetal vs the Sideshow being a silver-gunmetal.

In looking at screen ref pics (and brightening a bit, because the scenes are really dark) I think the Sideshow paint color is probably closer to accurate - the prop has a definite dark-sliver-gunmetal look, not as black-gunmetal as HT made it.

This matters because of the Palps robes being black - the more silvery gunmmetal of the Sideshow throne shows the figure off more (black robe/silver-gunmetal contrast) and also just makes for a more pleasing, brighter display piece. The Sideshow throne really lightened up nicely under Detolf lighting, whereas the HT throne remains darker due to it being more black, a bit of a "black hole" in the display.

I just can't wrap my mind around the emperor without his throne. I understand the gripes about the inherent problems with posing a plastic action figure in a plastic chair but for me he has to at least be standing next to it.
