Re: Sideshow should let Hot Toys make the droids

Its pretty apparent that SSC is the best thing that ever happened to SW 1/6. There's certainly room for improvement and I can't fathom some of their decisions but guys like Justin are what an artist needs. While its nice to have everyone lavish praise on you, in the end you need constructive criticism to keep you going toward the top of your game. Unfortunately we have no way of knowing the degree of meddling LFL does in these matters.

Re: Sideshow should let Hot Toys make the droids

I've often wondered if the old MPC R2-D2 kit was any good? I wouldn't go vinyl (too soft) but I'm pretty sure that kit was styrene.

Re: Sideshow should let Hot Toys make the droids

They may be able to build 3PO from the armor body, much like the actual costume was pieces over Anthony Daniels.

And they could have the exclusive with Daniels' head ;)

As for the size of the droids look here (you can see Kenny's legs there):

Re: Sideshow or Hot Toys for SW 12 inch?

Seeing the amazing looking HT Hellboy 12inch figures made me think of this thread. I really would love to see some completely Hot Toys Produced 12inch Star Wars figures.

Re: Sideshow or Hot Toys for SW 12 inch?

Everyone already knows that SideShow is ailing and failing in the realm of the 1:6 world. The Japanese manufactures Rule Supreme in the world of the rising sun. Hot Toys, Medicom, Dragon DML, DiD run circles around this sister USA manufacturer. Over the past two years SideShow has sunk fairly quick and I don't think it is their ultra slow releases that is killing them but their lack of vision. They once were unique but now they are completely predictable on their releases. Thank you Hot Toys for buying out SideShow. I think the only thing that they can make right are their statues because they're good for collecting dust, just like the DEAD do so well. Great job.

Since when was HotToys Japanese?! Or Dragon?! or DiD?! Did you even attempt to compare the LOTR DiDs against Sideshow's?! This is the biggest load of fanboy crap I've read to date! :rotfl

All of the SW figures on the Buck are easily transferable to a TrueType. The only issues I'd see would be certain hands needing to be customized.

Re: Sideshow or Hot Toys for SW 12 inch?

I want better HS (plus some of the earlier SS SW HS were large out of scale to the body), Better Paint, more accurate/scale clothing, etc...that's why I want HT SW 12inch Figures. They would be a vast improvement over the previous SS SW releases.

Re: Sideshow or Hot Toys for SW 12 inch?

I couldn't afford them. Don't get me wrong, I would love to see what HT would do with the license but I think SSC does a good job (sometimes great) and its affordable.

That's the biggest advantage. Star Wars is a property where this is a large ammount of cool characters and representations worth collecting, and SSC's kept it pretty affordable, and hopefully will mix up the $120 high end figures with the $80-$90 simpler figures to keep things healthy. Hot Toys is great quality, but with their methods and price, not good for a Star Wars line. HT would not likely make the random background characters and stick mostly with the core folks, that's been their way with their existing lines. I'm not sure HT's even big enough to take on Star Wars right now, they do a lot, but many lines with like 1-2 figures a year in each give or take. Star Wars, done at an SSC level, which it needs to be to get out a variety and even SSC hasn't touched on everyone yet, would consume all their resources and I don't think they'd want to do that now, if they got bigger maybe. I know they've expressed interest in the property, so hopefully they'll look to their relationship with Sideshow and help them do things like droids and such and use that as a way to make SW pieces and not have to give up all their resources devoted to a line of their own.

Re: Sideshow or Hot Toys for SW 12 inch?

I would pay more and take a few quality figures over a slew of less expensive sub-par figures any day.

Re: Sideshow or Hot Toys for SW 12 inch?

I don't know. At HotToys' pricepoint, I think if they took over the Star Wars 1:6 from Sideshow, I'd just drop the 12" and go for the PFs. At that point, it's almost pennies more.

Re: Sideshow or Hot Toys for SW 12 inch?

I'd love to see HT do SW, they'd certainly bring a more acurate aesthetic to the table, and for SW that is so important to me, especially with tailoring and head sculpts. The problem is they'd have to start again, as I want the main characters from ANH done first, and that will piss a lot of people off who have literally just bought SS figures. I guess they could kick off with a Luke in X-wing outfit, but you just know they would give him a headsculpt that would make everyone look at their old SS sculpts and say, cheez, now I need to buy three of this to swap the heads out.
I remember what seems like so many years ago now(6), getting the first Medi Luke figure. After years of Hasbro it was a breath of fresh air, far from perfect but it had an attention to detail that made me see things were changing.

I'd love to see HT tackle specific characters like Chewie, the droids, and definitely General Grievous.

I would.

But it would make the current SS SW figure drop quite a bit in $$$ value :lol

Yeah, you have a good point, having seen the Endo, Power-Loader and proto- Ironman figures no one could bring the droids of SW to life better than HT, 3P0, IG-88, hell, I'd even buy a 1/6 ASP if they made one.

I think it'd be a perfect union. Let SSC tackle the semi-humanoid aliens and humans and give the obviously tougher to construct (hence more $$$) to HT to release.

A 1/6 General Grievous from them, if the Iron-Man and PowerLoader are any indication, would be phenomenal and well worth the expected hefty price tag.
