From the pics I've seen I thought Medicom's stormtrooper was pretty good.

This is warning sign number 2. Haha. Everything is relative, but none of these guys are 1/10th as popular as a Stormtrooper. Stormtroopers are one of the most iconic characters in all of film, let alone one of the primary pillars of "Star Wars"

Besides this, Hot Toys are absolutely not going to produce characters that Sideshow is just about to release themselves - info from Sideshow and Hot Toys both confirming this. So you may get R2 and 3PO eventually from HT, but you should expect to wait until some time after Sideshow's are sold out and long in the hands of their buyers.

I'm starting to wish they weren't starting with ANH and instead were going with most popular characters first. Han and Chewie are a great pair but I want Sidious, Jedi Luke, ESB Vader, Maul, Qui-Gon, ROTS Anakin and Obi-Wan, prequel and OT Yoda, Lando, Artoo and Threepio. Stormtroopers are probably among that last figures i'd buy right now.

No Ja-Ja in your list?

The Power Of Hot Toys. You can forget it as far as collectibles go, HT will win over SS in the public market every time.

HT is doing Han, Chewy, Leia, Luke, Ben, Vader, Yoda, Boba... now armored variants (Luke/Han stormies and sandies soon to come I assume) and rumors of R2 and 3PO.... where does that leave SSC?

As distrib for HT and maker of aliens, supporting players and droid variants? 1/6 vehicles like landspeeder to put HT Luke/Ben into? Are the Han/Luke Hoth figs the last SW human/leads SSC will do?

It's announced as a partnership, but with the pace of announcements, will HT be the "primary" maker of 1/6 SW within a year?

Yes, IMO. I thought it very strange that Howard Chan referred to SS as "another company or other company" in an interview when discussing the Star Wars license. HT will do what HT want to, I doubt they really give a damn about SS, sure they distribute for them (now). Easily changeable in Chan's view I would imagine. This pretty much blows a lot of SS fanboy speculation out of the water. Leave the non humans to SSC? No, we are doing troopers and Vader.

Does SSC really care, though? They must make a killing on distribution with zero investment or risk. As far HT respecting SSC goes, sure they're doing Stormtroopers and Vader (almost certain to be ANH version), both of which were released years ago. For me to believe HT doesn't "give a damn" about their (largest?) distributor, I'd need to see them tease or preview something that SSC currently has on pre-order or shown to be coming down the pipe.

I dunno....That is a pretty dramatic height difference for it not to be Han / Luke.

Between the height difference, weapon choices and the bases looking like the grates of the detention block, I'd say there is a 90-95% chance this is Han & Luke.

Someone suggested just getting the head sculpts but we need to know if these are actual helmets that could fit over heads or are like the SS stormies.

I still say they are going to reveal the head sculpts of Han and Luke when they actually preview this set officially.

But it would be so like HT to offer this set, then months later offer a true Luke/Han with removable helmets.
