Re: Hot Toys - Star Wars: The Last Jedi - Luke Skywalker (Force Projection) - CONFIRM

The Sideshow Freaks humor is going over Mara's noggin. She apparently hasn't been around this neck of the galaxy long enough yet to understand it.

Re: Hot Toys - Star Wars: The Last Jedi - Luke Skywalker (Force Projection) - CONFIRM

Welp, confirmed Luke is back in some way in IX. Maybe just a few scenes, but cool nonetheless. The most interesting part of the announcement IMO is using unused footage of Carrie in the movie.

Re: Hot Toys - Star Wars: The Last Jedi - Luke Skywalker (Force Projection) - CONFIRM

This is good news. Proper closure for Mark and Carrie.

Re: Hot Toys - Star Wars: The Last Jedi - Luke Skywalker (Force Projection) - CONFIRM

So I assume his Force ghost will be appearing in the TFA outfit? The Crait one would be cooler but is probably unlikely.

Re: Hot Toys - Star Wars: The Last Jedi - Luke Skywalker (Force Projection) - CONFIRM

Good news indeed.

Though just like Force projection, I wouldn’t get a Force ghost figure either, if they made one. Just because neither are really him per se.

You never know with Force ghosts. If you use the young Anakin way of thinking, the Crait version would seem to be him at his best point.

I like to think that’s why he wielded his blue saber with his Force projection, because he was imagining the best version of himself. Even though his green saber was the saber he defeated and redeemed Vader with, it eventually also represented him at one of his more lower points: when he tried to kill his nephew out of fear and it was also the saber he had at the time when his rebuilt Jedi Order crumbled.

The blue saber perhaps had more sentimental value to him because he felt it represented himself at a time (ANH, ESB) when he was hopeful and pure. Sure that saber had a dark past, but he wasn’t privy of any of that and none of it happened while the saber was in his possession.

More "sentimental." Yeah that's why he threw it off the cliff. :lol

Re: Hot Toys - Star Wars: The Last Jedi - Luke Skywalker (Force Projection) - CONFIRM

He gave a sh** enough to not actually throw it off the cliff into the water. :dunno

But like everyone else, I also thought the scene could have been done several other ways to convey that Luke wanted nothing more to do with the Jedi at that moment.

It was demonstrably just an MCU-esque scene; something unpredictable to elicit a laugh from the audience.

Re: Hot Toys - Star Wars: The Last Jedi - Luke Skywalker (Force Projection) - CONFIRM

I actually thought it fit the personality of the character we saw in the first half of the movie really well, as this grumpy and exasperated Luke who was tired of playing the savior and thought people's reverence for the Jedi was seriously misplaced.

Obviously by the end though he had changed his tune on that.

Yeah, I got the intent of it, which is why I didn’t utterly loathe the scene. It wasn’t to show he didn’t give a ***** about the saber in particular. I just thought there were other ways to convey where Luke’s mind was at, without having to resort to a scene where it was blatantly obvious that it was meant to just draw a laugh from the crowd, and potentially give the wrong message that he didn’t give two *****s about his father’s saber specifically.

I think at the end of TFA, most people were probably expecting him to take the saber in sort of a “where in the heck did you find this” manner. So for instance, him just leaving Rey with her arm extended with the saber and simply retreating to his hut, thinking that she had come to enlist his help, would have been just fine. Or, he could have taken it and then taken it back with him to his hut and stored in away in some chest or something, so that way he personally knows nobody will get their hands on it since it’s in his possession, would have worked also. Then he could have at some point given it back to Rey right before she left to go and confront Kylo in sort of a “I’m not going with you, but here you’ll need this” moment. Sort of a sign that he was changing and was willing to let someone else with Jedi training try and help the The Resistance, but that it wasn’t going to be him and still needed the extra push for that. Kind of reminiscent of the ANH scene where Luke wanted Han to stay and help and Luke angrily chided him, and Han simply told him in a friendly manner “may the Force be with you” as a way to wish him good luck.

In fact, I think that would have been a cool little subtle nod to ANH. Much like Han seemingly wanted no part of fighting against the Empire and then suddenly he showed up in the crucial moment, have Luke’s Force projection appear and showing him meditating on the rock as it did, not having required the pep talk from Yoda.

Yeah, I don't like how that scene was handled, but don't mind Luke's intent. If he had tossed it to the side in a non-comical way, in disgust or disinterest, I would have been fine with it. It just started to be a situation where it felt like Johnson was trying to stick in a laugh every 4 minutes, or however long it had been since the Poe prank call scene.

:exactly:

Well I also thought a big part of that was Rian simply having a bit of fun with the fans who had speculated endlessly about what would happen in the opening moments, and who had attached all this weighty meaning to it.

Clearly he wanted to do something unexpected there (while also establishing from the start what Rey was up against), and I thought it was perfect and got a huge kick out of it.

Obviously many others... were not so happy. :D

Precisely. I think most people were expecting him to see the saber and have more of a hello old friend type of reaction.

Which is why I think him simply walking away without saying anything and sequestering himself in his hut because he wanted nothing to do with the Jedi, the Resistance, and the FO, would have been just as unexpected, while still conveying the point of where Luke’s mind was at and establishing what Rey was up against, without having to make it a forced in comedic moment.

But yeah I see your point as well. Like I mentioned, I got the intent of it, which is why I didn’t hate it like most. I just thought it could have been handled better.

Yeah, either of those might have worked. He takes it, we think he's going to give it careful consideration, but he just dumps it in a box and slams the lid.

What happened was so outside the realm of what anyone would do - so clearly simply a gag to play with people's expectations - that it was just silly in every way, even if you accept Luke's mindset.

Re: Hot Toys - Star Wars: The Last Jedi - Luke Skywalker (Force Projection) - CONFIRM

I feel like I'm the only person that didn't think the throw over the shoulder was intentionally comedic. When I saw it in the theater, my reaction was "oh ****", not hahahahaha.

But I do agree, it would've been better for him to just drop it or something.
