I bet most are not even fans they just buy them because they look pretty.
I guaran-effin-tee you that at least 70% of the entire production run is going to scalpers.

So what happens then? They just try to rip off only certain people that are diehard fans of Iron man and buy the Iron man figures cheap in order to prevent diehard fans getting their dream figure for a decent cost, so they have no choice but to go with them?
It's sad. Scalpers usually prey on new collectors who got in the hobby late for pre-ordering, most likely new collectors with money to burn that they buy anything from any franchise, starting with the most popular.
In our local Buy/Sell/Trade page on Facebook alone, you'd be surprised to see the number of new members joining each week looking for and/or buying DX12, DX11, Mark VII, Hulk, etc at insane prices, from $300-$500. I feel blessed that I came into the hobby in time for pre-orders of these items and have met really great sellers that sold me figures I wanted but missed out on at great prices.
And then there's this seller who posts photos of his stocks for sale on the page and you'd see multiples of Hawkeye and Mark VII, and some clueless new collector would comment "Wow! Those are RARE and you have lots of them!". Heavens know how much strength I gathered to keep myself from commenting "It won't be as rare if there weren't too many hoarders in the world".
Oh I see, so they prey on new collectors that missed out of getting for RRP and so feel forced to go with them?
Are they looking for new ones or used ones? I thought $300 was RRP for DX11 and DX12?
Not sure what the RRP was for Mark VII though.
Or are you saying $300 is the absolute minimum and they are more likely pay up to $500 for one of them?
Well Hoarders are not always sellers, I know of people that buy at least 3 of every figure. I guess I can see some purpose to buying multiple figures that come with different outfits but people that buy at least three Hulks are
However, what you said is so true that is actually sad.
Dude...the prices you listed for dx11 and dx12 definitely are NOT RRP. Dx11 was at least $230-$240 USD. Dx12 was $200-$220. Paying $300, you're already paying marked up prices. Same with the MKVII.
Hmichael made some really good points. It's really sad that fans and newcomers are either paying out their bums, or decided to skip on these well made items because of scalpers.
2 pieces of info I'd like to share with you dark: 1-in HK/china, scalpers would pay kids and grannies to get in line so they can purchase vouchers for HT convention exclusives.
2- I would frequent the HTs distributor in guang zhou china. I saw this lady that just reeked of scalper was getting ready to pay for boxes upon boxes of snake and the boss from The MGS line. I knew right then and there I was spot on with my first impression of her. She had NO IDEA that those figs weren't going to be hot sellers like IM, Batman...she believed that ALL HTs would sell like the aforementioned properties, so she thought it'd be best for her to get as much of the initial, or overall shipment.
Looking at the prices for recently released figures would have you believe that they're HAWT items. Figures such as captain america, thor, loki, hawkeye....But then look at the number of pages in their respective threads....they PALE in comparison to IM and Batman. Which means, IMO, that the cause for price mark up and lack of item availability is because most of production run are in the hands of scalpers.
You gotta be in before the lock on pre-orders or prepare for your wallet to get un-justifiably raped
I'm so glad i joined this forum as it helps collectors who might not know all the in's and out's of collecting and the do's and dont's. What i've learnt whilst being a member here (and lurking before that) has been pretty much priceless and has opened my eyes to the real world of collecting
Not to mention also putting you in contact with likeminded people who for the most part are here for the love of collecting as well as the crazy good customisers we have!
Three cheers for SSF
I knew you were a lurker before joining here, you seem to know how the board works, I thought for someone that has just joined he seems to know how to operate here pretty well. May I ask how long have you lurked here for before joining?
Maybe a year or so on and off
Alot of it was due to me searching things or figures on the internet and the results would most commonly lead me here
I'd browse what people were saying about what i was potentially about to buy or was considering
The only reason i bit the bullet and made an account was so i could participate in conversation about the DX12 mods as i'd recently picked one up and was interested in doing a few of the mods, also because of the fruitful MGS thread as that has been my main collecting point since i was a kid
It truly is an endless well of awe and inspiration for all the 80's & 90's pop culture which i've been brought up on and collect
Well Hot Toys wants to now re-release things, so they will probably end up getting the second version of these figures they missed out on.
Well $300 isn't exactly a huge price increase though except for the DX12, I don't ever remember that being close to $200 especially for a DX figure. I think at least it was $220, $200 is a bargain IMO.

Geeze people over there are crazy it sounds almost like criminal activity.
So what happened to her, she stuck with stuff she can't sell now?
Ok makes sense.
Did you end up doing any DX12 mods?
Forgive me for my ignorance but what is MGS
Yeah grew up in that era to.

Hmm Interesting theory and it makes sense, not good.

DX11's already a remake. Nolan's Batman Trilogy ended a year ago. If there'd be more TDKR figures new or remakes only HT surely knows. Iron Man just ended, and HT's focused on what's left of the armors they're yet to make. If there'd be a remake of previous armors, only HT knows when it would happen. That's why it's hard to risk it and wait for a remake that may or may not transpire. Besides, new collectors are usually less patient and would usually want to get what they missed on now regardless of the price. Some of them are also unaware of how the business works -- makes them the perfect prey for the scalpers.
I forgot to mention that $300 was the beginning of the mark up. And that's when it literally JUST hit the streets to vendors. I understand marking it up after a certain amount of time had passed...but just when it comes out? Overkill. Not to mention when folks agree to $300, scalpers slowly push the needle higher towards $330,$340,$350 and so on. All within the first month.
It's not just over here. Unfortunately this practice can be experienced back in the states. When the ipad 2 came out, the exact mutha effin thing happened. I was waiting in line to purchase my ipad, and 20% of the line was filled with old men and old ladies. First time I ever wanted to leave a line because I didn't want others mistaking me for one of them.
Well, There's a site here called taobao. It's similar to eBay, except without the bidding business. Snake and the boss are really cheap...ESPECIALLY the boss. So it's safe to say she has a $#!tload of them left.
Yeah i did all the main DX12 mods, painted the eyelids (didn't sculpt the squint), gloves, widened the gauntlets, widened the boots, heated the shoulder pads up to sit closer and i think i'll do the neck mod eventually as well as maybe widening the cowl
Sorry MGS is Metal Gear Solid
It was the best era
Most shops that still have the dx12 new are charging 340 and upwards. To get this figure for 300 now is a steal.
Look at how much cmdstore charges.. 449 brand new! LOL same price as the 1/4 preorder basically.
You think the neck is too long? Wow have anyone else widen the cowl, I know someone did on the DX02
DX 12 was $260 shipped from SS and DX11 was $275 for the Exclusive plus shipping. Regular was free shipping.
Another member said they heated up the whole head after taking the pers system out and widened it slightly. I think even a subtle amount can help
Well just because something is old doesn't mean it won't come back again. They remade and are still remaking the old predators. I think if there is a high market for it, it will be made.
