The point of this thread is that if a man says something lewd to your wife, you are more civilized if you walk away. If a man tells you to lick his boot, you are more civilized if you kneel. If a man tells you to give up half your paycheck to strangers who did not earn it, you are more civilized if you bend over and pay.

There's a big difference in being pushed into violence and enacting violence as a first resort.

If a man says something lewd to your wife and you immediatley punch him then you have anger issues. If you turn the other cheek and recognize that he is nothing worth getting bothered about you are civilized. If he says it again and continues to pester you enough and won't leave you alone and you punch him then you are a civilized man who had no other option but to commit violence.

At that point, you still have the option of walking away. Not sure what makes it any more imperative after you've chosen to ignore it once.

You don't have to take a swing the instant it happens. What matters is that you challenge the action. Most will take Jesus's advice and not risk violence, which is not civil, but cowardly.

There is never a need to resort to violence most people that do lack the brain power to think of a logical solution to the problem. In this day an age you don't dominate with strength you dominate with intellect. Knowledge=wealth=power.

In the case in which your family is being harrassed well how u react depends on the situation. Is it just some drunk kids heckling you or people with guns pointed in our face. If its just the former you ignore and call the cops, if its the latter you prey to god, unless your James bond. Really though only way I see resorting to violence is if someone breaks into your house, however be careful because they may have right to sue u for injury on your property!

No, it's the people who don't fear confrontation who are the cause of people who create strife. Bullies aren't natural cowards who would never say a word if they thought someone would stand up to them; they aren't encouraged by timidity. They are just there to test our civility and to see whose back can fit the most bootprints on their back. Nothing wrong with that if you just keep on acting like it's all fun and games.

Like many in this thread, the law has difficulty differentiating between initiated and retaliatory force. All I'm saying is that capitulating to the former in some kind of deluded effort to advance civilization does nothing to change the fact that force is the antithesis of civilized. To accept and permit instigated violence does nothing to protect one's self or loved ones, and if anyone honestly wanted to find the cause, a legal system that encourages submission would be the first place to look.
