I disliked them in the 80s, but their hits have grown on me now. Same goes for quite a few other 80s bands.

I love 80s stuff, and I love lots of indie-/alternative music, but I never cared for Sonic Youth. I just don't get it.

I think they were easily the best band of the 80's.

I'm not ready to say they're better than The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath or Frank Zappa. They are the clear and indisputable heirs to those legends, and I would have no issue calling them the most influential band since 1982.

Nothing in the past 30 years compares to them though.

The alternative thing came and went, IMO. I think more influence came from bands like Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, INXS, etc.

Master of Puppets and Justice were good. Joy Division was cool, but pretty mopey. U2 had their moments. You could add The Cure, Skinny Puppy, Ministry, early solo Ozzy, and a lot of other stuff, but Sonic Youth did things that were so beynd the pale that I have a hard time putting anyone else in the same category.

Chili Peppers. Jane's Addiction. Nirvana. Bjork. Shellac. Rachel's. Frank Black. Steve Albini. Neurosis. Crash Worship. Danzig.

I can come up with more, but the 90's were hardly a total wash. Especially in the first 5-6 years. (Unless you were listening to the radio, in which case...I don't know what to say).

I can list a lot of stuff from the 90s I love too. Fates Warning, Dream Theater, Spocks Beard, Porcupine Tree, Kings X, etc.

I was speaking more generically about what was going on mainstream. Grundge was a bunch of crap, Nirvana and RHCP included...IMHO

I was thinking more Blood Sugar Sex Magic, Bleach, and Nevermind. In Utero was weak, I despise Foo Fighters, and yeah, the Peppers have been crap ever since, but those albums had a lot of good stuff (BSSM being pretty much great all the way through).

I know what you mean though. I hate the 90's too.

As much as I loved the 80's, 70's, etc i'm not sure anymore its the era I miss as much as it is that I miss being a kid. Like, for example, if a dude was born in 1966 instead of me being born in 1976, maybe he'd miss the 70's. I also think the young nobs (an obvious crap era) of today don't see the present as something bad or lame ............. when they get older they'll miss the "2010's" Anyone feel the same way?

^i'm pretty considerate about those 90's selection(at a young age), i had to put up with more disturbing music on a day to day basis...the 90's got backstreetboyz, n'sync, spice gurls, hansons and those effin kiddie boybands shatness.
