I learned long ago that if you can't display your collection and instead it sits boxed in a closet or in storage or in the attic, then you're not a "collector" but a "hoarder".

Get rid of the "stuff". You're getting no enjoyment out of it. And don't fall into that trap of justifying the hoarding by thinking, "One day I'm going to buy a bigger house..." or "...one day I'll convert the baby's room into my Man-Cave..." Even if it does happen, you're tastes and hobbies may have changed by then.

Not in my case, I had most of my collection in boxes and eventually bought a home and have room now to display it. I was fairly selective from the beginning, and so my tastes weren't an issue. You buy now or pay a premium later.

WORD

Theese coments make me :banghead I have a buddy who would come by and geek out over my stuff, so two years ago he decided he would have a collection of his own. The poor bastard went insane. He didn't have a focus, just bought anything he could get his greedy little hands on no matter the cost. (over paid) Eventually he got burned out, tried to sell ( lost a lot of dough) now he just has a bunch of crap in boxes. i'm not telling you this story to make fun of him or the posters above. I can understand where you are coming from, in the early to mid 90s I went Mcfarlane toy crazy. Just remember hobbies should be fun not something you have to walk away from scarred. You can't own everything, unless your me. I'M RICH ^^^^^!!

Nah you got me all wrong Nick.:D

I am not so much a collector more of someone who is picking a few selective pieces that i love for a future theatre room.I have only bought half a dozen items including only the 3 statues at this stage so restraint is not a problem for me at all.

I only started this year but have already taken early retirement.

My comment pretty much refers to the crappy AUD dollar against the USD making it just to expensive until it fights it way back to somewhere close.;)

Oh i also agree that if u have lots of stuff just sitting around in boxes then you are not collecting for the right reasons unless its guaranteed they will be on display sometime in the imminent future.:)

I must confess, this hobby is very addictive. And I agree with the philosophy that if you don't have any real intention or option of displaying your pieces, why buy more? Flipping for a profit works less often than it backfires. So only get what you can enjoy on display, or rotate your collection, and be willing to let some stuff go even if it means a loss. I'm learning this myself.

One room is about 50% filled with empty boxes, floor to ceiling, honestly, and the rest of the space is filled with stuff I can't display. If the global economy was doing better, flipping even at a minor loss or maybe even a profit wouldn't be as tough as it is now, but people just aren't buying the "old" stuff and only want the new things (myself included).

I think there are probably a few of us out there that wouldn't want to advertise the amount of collectibles we have hoarded and no longer want. I'm working on chiseling mine down to a more manageable amount a little at a time. This doesn't happen over night, takes years to collect this much stuff.

But a lesson I'm learning is that this crap shouldn't take over your life (except during spooktacular) or your living space too much. That being said, I sure do think the stuff I have up is perty.

basements are a godsend.....but one room of my basement is half full of boxes but I can't bring myself to free myself of the boxes of stuff i know i'm going to keep.

i'm having a purge at the moment, trying to sort out what I am collecting! I went hell for leather this year, and really didn't think too much of what I was buying. Now I have decided to only get collectibles that I REALLY want.
I have no plans to quit, but I need to slow down........

Were you collecting figs when you two got together? If so, then it isn't really fair for her to complain now unless it's a money issue and it's causing problems.

WRONG....when you're married, the Poon doesn't need any excuse to complain...she has control of the Poon and you're at her mercy.:lol

As the saying goes...if Momma ain't happy, nobody is happy.

So true :mwaha

Assuming money isn't an issue, I'd think (hope) she would support this on some level. The wife and I have an allowance (mad money) we get each month and we can buy whatever.

I elect to spend mine on my high end 1/6th hobby....figs, movies, art work, display cases etc. If I chose not to buy anything for four months and have a grand of mad money and a slew of figs become available......boom, I'm on it. The wife doesn't get it, nor do I expect her too. Long as money allows bills to be paid, fund retirement, children's college and vacation and space is available the hobby will continue :naughty

i'm still hanging in there, i've gotta do some cutting back and so I def can't get as much as i used to but i get what i can. I'm a collector for life.

I am thinking about quiting picking my nose. I have been caught 3 times recently and it was rather embarrassing

Argh, this is so retarded! One of the statues I've wanted for a long time is now on eBay for a price that I would pay 2 months ago, but since NOK is a bit expensive compared to USD at the moment the price is still the same as it used to be.
Oh well, I might have to buy it afterall since it probably wont get any cheaper as time passes by :/
