Sure there are. Chinese is much older, more developed, and generally more effective.

Nope, it depends of who's using it and the circumstances of it...
in reality, martial arts are mostly useless...
I'd like to see examples of this effectiveness you speak of...
like a comparisson to see if Kung-Fu, Karate, Aikido or Tae-KwonDo is more effective than the other
If it's based on Jackie Chan's movies or reality?...

:slap

Are you serious?...
There's no such thing as "better" martial arts than others...
maybe Kung Fu is a bit more "flashy" but calling it that much better is quite the overstatement... :pfft:

actually, devilof76 is right in that chinese martial arts pre-dates all other known forms of martial arts.

as to which one is "better", technique-wise i'd say kung fu/wushu is the most complete simply because it inherently carries the virtues of self-control and avoidance of conflict which elevates it beyond just a mere fighting system. these philosophies have their roots in buddhism and taosim. as do karate and whatnot, but the chinese perfected it way earlier.

but exponent-wise, it really depends on the skill level of the individual in his/her respective martial art, so a "direct" comparison of any 2 exponents using different disciplines is pretty difficult, if not impossible.

I get all of my martial arts education from Jackie Chan movies.

Also, there is no such place as Aztlan.

Sorry kid, I think I overestimated you... keep reading those history books...
:lol:lol:lol

Yes, I know, that's not the issue...

Sound pretty much like every other martial art... Most of them have a philosophy and a very developed technique... so, being older doesn't automatically qualifies it as better :dunno

Exactly my point! :duff

LOL...is this thread really going to turn into "what country's fight-dancing is better than the other's"?

well, i didn't really say kung fu is better. just more developed in a truly holistic manner, which to me is the essence of genuine martial arts.

but it isn't exactly true that pretty much every martial art has a philosophy. at least not an underlying spiritual, peaceful one. krav maga (israel) and kali/eskrima (the philippines) are two major examples where the intent is to hurt the enemy asap and take them down without mercy nor hesitation. there is no underlying philosophy of restraint or avoidance of conflict. they're pure combat systems. that's also why they're so effective for everyday street-fighting.

and yes, i agree that talking about real martial arts sure beats talking about that cinematic abortion that is the karate kid remake. ugh, just typing that name out leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

I saw the trailer for this movie tonight at Shrek 4. I don't care what anybody says. It looks like a very good movie.

Except for 1 thing. The movie is called "Karate Kid". In it, Jackie Chan tells the kid, "I will teach you real Kung-Fu".

This is such a HUGE OBJECT OF NOTE. Why the hell did the filmmakers not see this at all? :slap

They're two both different fighting styles!!!Karate is Japanese and Kung-Fu is Chinese.

They should call it the KUNG-FU KID then!!!! Hollywood is retarded!!!

I don't get that either. Kung-Fu Kid would have totaly worked as a title. It would have been an homage more than a "remake."

just want to comment, that there IS an underlying philosophy regarding kali/eskrima. its history is simple, though it was primarily used in battles. IMO, the discipline itself entails to avoid conflict as much as possible...sanctity of life, to use what is necessary when it counts. :monkey3

and yes, this remake is still so wrong in so many levels.haha

The essence of genuine martial arts is to be victorious in martial affairs, i.e. war. Even Sun Tzu begins with an injunction to avoid conflict if possible. It is common sense that true victory would avoid war altogether, but failing that, one would need to be superior in martial prowess to vanquish the threat posed by an enemy.

How the non-confrontational aspect of the Chinese tradition renders their martial arts superior is the degree to which that idea is carried through to actual combat. The use of negative energy and reliance upon strength that characterizes most cultures' systems is a handicap in the face of systems designed to employ the aggressor's strength against them. What appears to be passivity (as in tai chi) is simply a greater understanding of the natural laws that govern any kind of physical activity. I understand that some non-Chinese systems give a certain credence to this fact, but only the Chinese have ever integrated the principle from the ground up. Musashi understood (per Book of Five Rings) but that was an induction he arrived at after years of fighting, and not something he was initially taught. In contrast to that, the arts developed at Wudan Mountain are a non-confrontational system from the word go, and I would put my money on a master of that art before a master of any other school.
