Thats the Kolkata Derby played between Mohun Bagan and East Bengal. Mohun Bagan are one of the oldest football clubs in the world and East Bengal too are quite old established by the refugees who lost everything during the partition of Bengal in the Biritish Colonial times. (Im an East Bengal supporter by birth - because my paternal grandparents were refugees
- my mom though is Mohun Bagan as she was born on this side of Bengal) So its almost a partisan atmosphere like say the El Clasico of Catalonia (Barca) vs Mainland Spain (Real Madrid) kind of tension, except the crowd bays for each others blood. (and my family becomes divided too
)
Both teams share the same stadium for their home matches pretty much like Milan and Inter do with San Siro so it makes tensions even worse.
Plus our football Stadium is the second largest in terms of capacity in the world somewhere along 120000 people can fit in. (When Argentina captained by Messi played a friendly match versus Venezuela here I think the crowd swelled close to 150000 including those who entered illegally.I bet you didnt know that the worlds second largest football stadium was in India
Anyway football is popular in certain regions of our country only as cricket is the predominantly popular sport. That is why our quality is not even close to the European or South American games. We did famously qualify for the WC once in the mid 60s or so but since all out players played barefoot the team was barred to compete.
Yeah, I know about the Celtic/Rangers thing... damn shame Rangers were demoted to the lower divisions. The Scottish league must have become a one horse race now. I know how the Irish love the game... Irish fans are some of the best in the world as Ive seen them in the Euros, World Cups and the Champions League ones!
But here... a Derby day means the city is tense and riot police are out in numbers.
