I'm not making any "excuses" at all, only pointing out that you obviously have selective standards with these movies. It's ALL far-fetched.

I don't have selective standards. I think this movie was sub par. Did I enjoy it? Yes I said I did. I think that you being the ultimate Indy fan you are can't believe it. You can't justify it yet you are enthralled all the same. You watched it and were like WTF? LOL! Be all you can be dude. Be the ultimate. At the end of the day this movie was just ok at best.

There is a difference. Ghosts and gods are one thing. Aliens and Area 51 are another. I mean come on.

Not really... One man's God's are another man's Aliens. They all take the same kind of faith to believe in their existence. And all of them have no "real" evidence that they exist besides testimonials and pure belief. :lecture

I haven't taken the time to read all of the posts yet, I'll have to do it tomorrow, but I did want to toss my two cents in. At first I disliked the beginning because it felt so slow, I'm used to picking up with Indy in the thick of things, but it makes sense that with him being older he would have to be pulled in to this adeventure. The whole area 51 part felt weird to me, like something was missing, and I really disliked the part with Indy in the nuclear bomb testing field. I know that there are other parts in Indy movies that defy likelihhood (such as the submarine surfing in Raiders and the raft in TOD) but this was a bit much for me. The other thing that brings the movie down for me was the whole alien thing, it wasn't horrible, but it just didn't sit well with me. But I can understand that they were probably trying to go for the period in the same way the first three fit with the 30's this seems like something from the 50's.

I really enjoyed pretty much everything in the middle. Overall I need some time to think it over and see another viewing, but I enjoyed it and its not bad at all. I think it achieves what it set out to achieve and I think it works for an older Indy and a later time setting.

Uh, hello... Area 51 actually exists you know. :lol

By the way, I am the only one here who remembers that the first draft of the script (by Jeff Boam) was called "Indiana Jones And The Saucermen From Mars"?

Maybe Teemu can show you the path of elightenment.

regular ridiculous? Yes.....Massive overload of CG Prarie Dog/CG Monkey ridiculous? No

What were those things on screen for 20-30 seconds? Why is everybody freaking out so bad about the prairie dogs and monkeys?

And yes, the movie did have a lot of CG. All big action movies these days have a lot of CG, that's just the way it is. This isn't 1981.

And of course how could I forget the two pieces of glue that without them, the PT would've been nothing, Ewan McGreggor and Ian McDiarmid, they always brought their A game and I think that why was ROTS worked with even people dissappointed entirely with TPM and AOTC, because those 2 were pretty focal parts of that movie.

Back to Indy, since it's my only taste of the 50's, did anyone else think of Back to the Future during the brawl in the cafe with Mutt and Indy. "Hey Biff, what the hell is that!" :lol

Totally, Ewan and Ian really raised the bar in the PT. I am consistently impressed on their total performance throughout the trilogy.

And in that cafe fight scene, it totally did have a BTTF vibe to me... :lol

And Badmoon... I don't feel like I am being a huge Indy fan or apologist... I just really enjoyed the movie, loved it in fact... came away smiling and looking forward to seeing it again... Call me strange.. I wish I had an explanation besides just that I took it for what it was...

Area 51 exists and I will even claim as such. Even though none of us have absolute proof. Do they have aliens there? F no! Do they test weapons and other aircraft that you have not seen? Hell yes!

I'm starting to feel more comfortable with the Skull mythology now that I understand there is a reality basis for it. My not liking it was due to the fact that I thought it was entirely fiction from Lucas and Spielberg and it left me thinking, why would you come up with this as your plot idea, you could come up with anything. Now that I know they were still sticking to some myth of the world, it doesn't bother me. As bizarre as the myths in the other 3 were, knowing there was some reality behind them unified the ideas. When the Skull plot struck me as having no reality behind it, it didn't fit, now that it has that, it fits better.

What are you talking about? I am no more saying I love this movie than you are saying you hate it (though I think the latter is closer to the truth than me loving it).

I have photographic proof that the base exists and I've actually seen it with my own eyes from Tikaboo Peak.

I'll tell you why people have a hard time with the alien storyline in Indy, it just seems out-of-place. Religious & historical artifacts make sense in the world of Indy, things that are widely accepted and have some weight. It just seems odd to have Indy going against aliens or bigfoot, that belongs in the world of X-Files.

Well, I'm with Lucas, Spielberg, et al. in that it doesn't feel out of place in an INDY movie set in 1957.

Same here... as I have said before.. it fits the period to me. Doesn't feel out of place at all.

I'm almost glad my nonexistent film career never happened... obviously I am waaaaay off base in my tastes. :lol

Ah, just noticed there's a SPOILER thread:naughty

Here's a few random thoughts...

-First time it shows Indy, my impression is that he looks really old & his voice sounds strange. For most of the rest of the movie, he was the classic Indy I remember.

-Marion seemed forced to me, it was like the actress who played Marion walked onto the set to sign autographs & they just put her in. She seemed out-of-character.

-I'm not ready to see Shia in Indy gear, but like in Transformers, he was great in this film.

-The CG monkeys & the Prairie Dogs sucked and seemed out-of-place.

-too much CG

-I'm still on the fence about the alien storyline.

-I felt insulted by all of the classic Indy references, seemed like they tried too hard to sell people on the whole saga than KotCS alone.

I'm not saying the movie was bad, I still enjoyed it for what it was. I'm hoping it will eventually grow on me, but my first reaction it to feel jaded by the whole thing.

I'm completely on the opposite side here.

Nothing lasts forever. Indy is old what do you expect-CG fakery to make him young again.

Marion evolved, she's had a kid and menopause will do that to them.

Shia came across everybit the young punk he was supposed to and he has a naturally skill at comedy without going overboard.

Not all the prairie dogs were fake! But the ant squish did look alittle out of place.

Aliens? How do you top the Ark and Last Supper Cup? If you don't try something different, everyone thinks your "just being safe". Besides, I think its a perfect representation of '50s Lo-Fi.

I feel that way too. But I also agree with Irish that when looking at the originals being set in the 30's they reflect the movies of that time and this movie reflects a movie from the 50's. It feels weird when looking at the movies as a whole, but when stepping back and looking at them as movies it actually fits pretty well and probably stays truer to the intent of Indy movies than if they had made them more like the originals.

Ever see Fight Club? Remember the scene where Tyler splices in the split-second porn scene into the kids movie?

same effect.

...and CG these days ends up looking faker than alot of movies from 1981 alot of times. It worked great in Transformers, not so great in the new Indy flick.

Thanks a lot guys... I will not be seeing this film. I loved the Indy Franchise but from what you guys are saying, the heavy use of CGI and ridiculous and implausible action(Mutt w/monkeys, crazy waterfall stunt, Dopey Gofers) I will not be seeing this monstrosity in any theater, or, in the future on DVD from the discount bin at Jacks 99 cent store.

It sounds like this should never have been made. I have heard the same things from co-workers who saw the film today and I trust their and your opinions.

Time for Lucas to turn over the reigns of his franchises over to more capable hands.

Remember... "Howard the Duck"
