I think one of the reasons he is wearing lifts is that Gwyneth Paltrow is so tall. I remember watching some behind the scenes stuff on the first film and the scene where Tony and Pepper are dancing you can see he has some big shoes on. I guess he doesn't want to look like a midget next to her.

No, it isn't a case of Tom Cruiseisms (who actually does that), Tony Stark is supposed to be 6' and Pepper is supposed to around 5'9" according to the Marvel databases so they are trying to keep that height difference.

I know nothing about the character from comics, only movies, and that whiplash just looks really goofy to me. While Iron Man as a whole is a fantasy story, at least the Iron Man suit and Iron Monger felt plausible and real, but whiplash seems going too far into fantasy design to keep the realistic context of the first movie.

What people have to remember is that Favreau wants to show the evolution of a villain the same way he showed the evolution of the hero. What you see is Whiplash's "Mark 1", Favreau at Comic Con mentioned that you'd see a similar progression by him as you did from Tony in Iron Man 1. The conceptuals that have been put out there lead to a full on mech suit possibly provided by Justin Hammer who ironically is also shelling out War Machine.

We'll see how it comes off in the movie, right now it's mainly stills and pure images are one thing, seeing something in action is different.

although I do think this looks cool - I would have preferred a much less "Iron Man like" villain this time around. But I still am psyched...

Are you referring to his Star Wars Lightsaber like weapons, only this time it's flexible in design.

He didn't bother me before but you did peek my curiosity with what it is that's bugging you.

I also slightly agree with what hecubus mentioned, about repeating the Iron Man-ish design for the villian but I believe he will be more interesting a character/villian this time around.

Then again I liked Halloween 2 and GI Joe so what the ???? do I know :lol

It's just his overall look. Iron Man and Iron Monger, while ficticious in their function, look like real world stuff, they don't stand out as comic book based in appearance, but Whiplash complete looks like a comic book character.

I like it when comic book films stick to making the things you see look and feel plausible, like you could actually see something like that in the world. Nolan's been doing it well with Batman, and I felt Iron Man 1 fell into that category, but based solely on images, Whiplash feels too out there to be something you might ever see in the real world.

Shouldn't that be Backlash? Whiplash is Backlash's wife. I could look it up, but I'll wait for the human comic-book encyclopedia that is The Mike.

Well I don't know....the scottish clothing store down the street from me certainly has a skirt like that up for sale and the porn shop next to my kids elementary school most certainly has those whips and arm contraptions up on their walls.....or so I've been told, I never really visited the place myself.

They're just not marketed for defeating Iron Man, that's all. :lol

Wikipedia describes that he starts as Whiplash, then later changes his name to Backlash...

I wonder how Hot Toys will make the whips light up.... hmmm:monkey3 Really excited for this figure more than Warmachine :joy

Also I think the costume looks realistic. I mean it looks like something he put together in his garage. Like he was working on it the whole time while his wife thought he was making model airplanes or painting 1/6 WWII figures. He was building that thing.

"...***** Tony Stark.... thinks hes so smart.."

" IVAN, DINNERS READY ! "

"..uh j-just a minute...be right up honey"

" THE KIDS ARE WAITING "

" I SAID I'LL BE UP IN A MINUTE! JUST START EATING WITHOUT ME! "

" Well what are you doing down th-"

"DON'T COME DOWN HERE !! "

:lol

i have a feeling that they're just gonna release the iron man marks IV, V, and VI, and war machine. they didn't release iron monger at all, so why would they bother with whiplash? (although personally i would take iron monger and whiplash...i just doubt it will happen :monkey2)

Whiplash from the film is a mix of the characters of Whiplash/Backlash and the Crimson Dynamo. If you want to figure out the connection you have to look at the Mark Scarlotti Whiplash which was introduced in 1968. He was Whiplash first and then after his defeat by Iron Man joined a criminal syndicate calling himself Backlash. He worked for Justin Hammer during this time and after the Onslaught saga in the books went back to the Whiplash persona. There have been a total of four or five Whiplashes in Marvel Continuity.

The interesting part is that Whiplash looks to be mixed with the first Crimson Dynamo who was also the creator of the armor, Dr. Anton Vanko only they are calling him Ivan Vanko...the reason that is interesting is that Boris Turgenev, the second Crimson Dynamo, in his first and only appearance, came to the United States with his one-time partner, the Black Widow, to kill Anton Vanko, Tony Stark, and Iron Man. Stealing the suit, he almost carried out his mission, virtually defeating Iron Man. But he was killed by Vanko, who, sacrificing his own life for the cause of freedom, fired an experimental and unstable new laser pistol, killing Boris.

Its possible that Boris Turgenev's story might be mixed into Vanko's giving a in for Black Widow or that Widow actually comes with a Turgenev character to kill Iron Man and that might lead to her entry which would tie into both characters.
