Mandarin is a hard character. If they had cast a Chinese man, they'd be in trouble for stereotyping. If they cast a white man, they'd be in trouble for white washing. Catch 22. I understand their dilemma in this instance and won't cry foul at the whitewashing. Usually I'm against it but they've stated their logic on the matter and I'll say whatever and go with it. I know nothing of this character anyways so won't be upset about it.

Well, to get back to the heart of the matter regarding the casting of Kingsley as a non-chinese asian, it could be that since IM 3 is being co-produced in China having a Chinese villain might be as they say "untoward". If that was the main consideration over Ben Kingsley's artistic contribution, then screw that. Still can't wait to see what he can do. I only hope he doesn't sleepwalk through it.

BTW:

It is a perfectly acceptable common practice to refer to those of oriental/chinese ethnicity as "asian". Griefing over semantics is an automatic -500 internet! The fact that India is geographically next door to China does not rule out the ethnic distinctions being made. The comics never made him out to look remotely south asian/indian/tamil or whatever.

Regarding the Mandarin, I heard the explanation is that Kingsley's Character is some kind of a terrorist with a history against the Chinese government, and he only calls himself "Mandarin" as a racist remark to taunt China. (kind of like if Bin Ladin called himself the Yankee or something...) The story will basically involve Tony Stark helping China to take down the Mandarin.

Also on another note, the new comic era "Marvel Now" will see the return of Iron Patriot, this time the armor suit will be worn by a hero instead and he'll be joining the Avengers. So by the time IM3 comes out Iron Patriot will already be a hero for some time.
