On the note of Rocket Raccoon, the Guardians of the Galaxy movie is probably the one I'm most excited for. It's potentially the oddest, and I like me some odd. It's also directed by James Gunn who I adore.

Right there with ya, brother! I like to think that GotG is like an underdog. People are very suspicious and some wouldn't even bet on it, but it's gonna be mindblowing. I think it's the same situation as IM1 imo. I really thought it was gonna suck, but I've never been so wrong :lol

I love Thor in the films but the whole science appearing to be magic explanation only really works if you actually have an explanation. You can call anything "science" you want but it's still magic unless you can explain it.

There's nothing wrong with that in a comic book film at all and it's great to have it. I just don't think a Mandarin with rings that are when it comes down to it basically the same exact thing as Asgardian "science" is all that hard to believe within the universe. It would also make a nice contrast against Stark's technology which I think is kind of the entire point of the character.

Totally agreed on your take of Mandarin vs Iron Man (and likewise I'm sure it was the entire point of Thor vs IM in Avengers -- and it worked). Also on GotG, I remember arguing on another forum that it would never happen (hate of Rocket Racoon clouded my judgement) but glad I was wrong. It is a bit of a different choice and will be fun to watch, if it's handled right. Not familiar with James Gunn but I'll make a point to look up some of his stuff.

May it be so with me, also, Grinch!

James Gunn wrote and directed: Tromeo and Juliett, Slither, and Super. He wrote but did not direct the Dawn of the Dead remake and weirdly both live action Scooby Doo movies which kinda makes me want to watch them. Never even considered it.

Tromeo and Juliett is a Troma movie, so unless you know what that means, do not see it. Slither is probably the most approachable of his movies. Super is a weird and pitch black super hero comedy.

Yep, this has been my take on Thor since he was introduced into the Marvel movie universe (and they did think to say so). His fight with Iron Man in Avengers, for example, totally worked and I didn't feel any dissonance between 'magic' and 'technology' during that scene.

I get where you're coming from but have to disagree. I'd have no issues with Nolan Bat-verse being merged with Man of Steel, for example, even though Nolan (IIRC) predicated Batman on living in a world without other superheros. So long as MoS creates a credible world in which Superman can exist, it would be the same for me as believing in a world where Spider-Man and Punisher both exist (or Thor, for that matter). I haven't seen the movie, but I think Mandarin could work either way, also (space rings or figurehead).

Have to admit, that's where my suspension of disbelief also snaps. Hated that character in the comics (and a lot of GotG... just never connected with the concept/art/writing) and don't expect I'll like much better as a movie, unless it's really good. Very cynical about it, to say the least.
I hope they pull off the Mos & Nolan Bats shared universe because that would mean a possible summer with JLA & Avengers movies competing with each other. :yess:
I remember at sdcc last year being at the Marvel panel. They announced gotg and I thought 'wtf is that?' Honestly, I know nothing about gotg. I'm willing to admit there are people with a more extensive knowledge of comics than I have. But, I'm curious to see how the movie will be. Hopefully, they don't snap my suspension of disbelief because Marvel's on a pretty good streak right now.

Ironically IM3 did it for me.... and not Thor...

hope CA2 and Thor 2 does some redeeming....

GotG.... well if StarWars works... so can it... both under Disney now...

Thor didn't wow me on first watching but on subsequent views the characters all won me over big time and I find myself enjoying it more each time I watch it.

I really thought it was gonna suck, but I've never been so wrong :lol
I snuck into the theater to watch this after I saw Hellboy 2 and was pleasantly surprised! All I knew of IM before was the 90s cartoon with the hair metal band screaming "I...AM...IRON MAN!!!" :rotfl

Hmmm, no idea of what a Troma movie is, but I get the feeling I should heed your advice... but now that you tell me not to bother, I think, well, maybe I'll like it! Regardless, I will make a point to watch Slither and Super (and loved the writing in Dawn of the Dead... one of the few remakes, IMO, that easily surpasses the original -- even if I do appreciate Romero). Always enjoy reading your posts, dedguy. Thanks!

Yes, would love to see Avengers competing with DC movies of the same calibre as Batman Begins/The Dark Knight and potentially Man of Steel (not making any predictions but it looks great so far). I'm sure if they decide to include Rocket that it will somehow work in context, just difficult for me to visualize.

:hi5: Have faith! Maybe James Gunn will even make Rocket Racoon your most beloved character :lol
Haha, wouldn't go that far but maybe I'll grow to like him, just a bit!

I had the opposite reaction. I was expecting not to care for it too much, due to it stretching the bounds a bit (and was never a huge Thor fan when reading comics) but it was instantly my favourite (or maybe a tie with Iron Man) of all the Marvel films. Really thought that they handled Thor well and enjoyed the entire story on Earth and Asgard (really liked how they handled the bifrost bridge and Asgard in general, also).

:exactly:

They better try really hard, and it WILL be hard to make a realistic talking Raccoon, unless they show its beginning as a very smart pet or any good background, I would hate to see it at the first minutes of the movie with clothes and all talking with Gamora about last weekend or something :lol

The prospect of this is very intriguing to me. One day we may be admiring in hand pics of a ht rocket raccoon.:lol

:panic:

:lol I don't know what I would do if that happens, I'll try to be open minded about it but I'm very aware that GotG might ruin this for me.. if the movie is not good enough when it arrives then I'll just ignore it, as long as we keep having Captain America, Iron Man and Thor I'll keep watching the movies and buying the figures

that is why they call it programming......................

If that was the case then all movies would get better on subsequent viewings which is not the case. At least in my experience. Some movies, books, music, etc get better on subsequent viewings for a variety of reasons. Often it's because they have a depth that wasn't immediately apparent or they are more interesting once you know how everything plays out.

Thor I think I was just thrown at first by getting dumped right into the 70s Prog Rock album cover world of Asgard. On subsequent views I was expecting it so it didn't have the same disorientating effect.

I'm hoping not diecast as well. I'd like to get one normal-ish Iron Man from IM3. I'm getting Red Snapper and Igor since they're both plastic and Red Snapper has enough articulation for me. I just can't buy another die-cast figure. I have had too much bad luck with that material.

Any movie made has flaws.

Agreed. I've yet to see a perfect movie.

In my opinions flaws are simply pointed out to justify a dislike of a film rather than being the source.

Disagree for me. Dependent on the amount and degree, our dislike justifiably mounts until we don't like what we're watching. Different for everyone, and the wild card IMO is the ability of skilled creators to mask those flaws. Nolan did it amazingly well in Inception for me.

As I noted, and you edited it out, that's my experience. Your milage may vary but it's worth thinking about. For me at least, I can look at two movies, one which I loved and one which I loathed. When I look at what flaws I noted as the reasons for why I hated the one movie, I can find those same exact flaws in the movie I loved.

Edited back in.

Yeah, it's interesting to think about, and like I pointed out before, I think it boils down to the wild cards in the creators of the movies we love being able to mask those flaws, or at least not have us pay them mind while in the experience. Flaws that are apparent jar me out of movies, big or small.

If Iron Man 3 was written a little better, and directed a little better, I would have enjoyed it a lot more because those flaws wouldn't have stuck out like a sore thumb for me.

I'm personally of an admittedly extreme opinion that there's no such thing as good or bad in film, books, etc. There's simply different opinions and liking or disliking. There can be loose rules that guide the making of these things but they can be broken and still result in a film, book, etc that is considered "good". These rules also change over time.

…and we're moving pretty far astray of what this topic is about.

The only diecast figure I'd consider getting would be the Mark 41 (Bones) as I love that design so much. I'd certainly prefer it in plastic though, especially considering it's intricate techno-filigree.

Now this is entering super interesting territory. But yeah, off topic :lol
