I agree with this...though even though Sunbow created the 'reptilian version' of cobra commander,Hasbro did still allow it...they do control the characters(ask Sideshow with their pending approval)
of course, I know the reasons why he turned into a reptilian snake, but no-one will believe me

lol, I know you're gonna say the Illuminati or Masons are involved or something, but I was wondering what made Hasbro turn to the whole Cobra-la thing as well earlier. GI Joe - as it was in the "golden years" of 1982-86 - seemed to be working just fine as is, so why all the sci-fi/fantasy mumbo-jumbo?

I guess the Kenner Star Wars line had been off the shelves for a couple years by then. Maybe they thought they could sell more figures by going more and more sci-fi and taking over that niche? :dunno

Zartan was the first "shark jump".

Oh I don't know about that... a step in that direction, perhaps, but I like that GI Joe maintained a balance between realism and sci-fi elements. Otherwise it'd be a little boring, imo.

Technically, there'd be only one "shark jump" moment, I should think. I think it'd be Cobra-la, but a case could be made for Serpentor (though I like Serpentor, personally).

Some minor Joe news, hidden in the form of a Star Wars question.

Q: In a recent Q and A you stated your development team is working on finishing a new 12-inch female body. Do you have a time-table? If so, how long before we can expect an Empire Strikes Back Leia?

A: Mmmhmmm… still in progress, but coming along quite nicely. The base body is almost done, although a little more engineering work is required before we call it fully ready. In either way, we’ll be beginning development work on the first females in the line-up, including some bodacious babes from G.I. Joe, and indeed – Leia from ESB. So no time table yet, meaning that releases are far from imminent but progress is progressing.

Hurry up and do it already, Sideshow.

Translation, thanks for jack squat SS

Buzz Dixon (military consultant and one of the writers of the cartoon) sheds some light on that in the 1987 GI Joe: The Movie Blu-ray commentary. He said Hasbro decided they were moving on from Cobra Commander and wanted ideas for a backstory on a "Cobra Emperor." Dixon recalled struggling with the idea of how to introduce this supposed Emperor that no one in all of Cobra had ever mentioned before.

He stated that he had two ideas; either have Cobra create their own emperor or have them revealed to be supported by a secret, underground civilization. He said Hasbro said, "Perfect, we'll do both." And both Serpentor and Cobra-La were born. Hasbro decided to introduce Serpentor in 1986 and Cobra-La the following year. Cobra-La was actually a place holder name Dixon invented based on Shangri-La until he could think of something cooler. Unfortunately Hasbro thought it was cool enough and made it official.

Hasbro never made a Cobra Commander with a snake head but it absolutely endorsed it and even considered it a parallel "canon" to the comics. He never appeared that way in the comics but Hama was forced to write him out of the series due to his reptilian demise in the cartoon. That pretty much shows where the comic book ranked in the pecking order with Hasbro.

yea, metal being able to move with facial expressions was pretty hokey.

I think that anything the cartoon did had to be taken with a grain of salt... I suspect the mask wasn't actually meant to move - the cartoon just dumbed things down for kids.

Destro's no more unrealistic than the Man in the Iron Mask (almost certainly the main inspiration for the character and which, to some degree anyway, actually occurred... though I think there's some question as to whether the "iron" part of the mask was invented...).
