In...Alameda...Chekov! :D

I loved Yelchin's performance as Chekov. A nice "nod" to Walter Koenig's Chekov I thought, and yet made the role his own. They all did. Stellar performances all around with this new cast!

I'm going to see the movie a second time someday soon.

Now what was the little being that hung around with Scotty? I've been a Star Trek "Trekkie" since 1975...and I don't recall seeing that species...anywhere. I guess it's a new one in this movie. Just like a few other new species I saw in Starfleet.

Wow, that redheaded green Orion girl was HOT!

I agree with Moon, the opening scene was just awesomly heart wrenching. I felt so much for two characters who were in the movie for 5 minutes tops...

Unlike another summer movie which had a billion characters, who each had 2 minutes tops and.....er...nevermind. :D

I loved this movie! I was trying not to get hyped up for it, and even though I still did this movie more than delivered.

From the opening scene were I was bummed out over Kirk's death to end I was stoked. The funny thing is that for a good deal of the film I was thinking "that can't of happened", or that's not something that occurred in the series... then when the twist was revealed it made perfect sense.

The great thing is this is the first reboot where they've actually explained why the reboot is happening while still owning that it is a reboot. And of course by using time travel and singularities they did it in a decidedly Star Trek way! And now they have carte blanche to do what they want with the series.

I would still say Wrath of Kahn is my favorite flick... but this one is right up there with it.

Trek was around way before Star Wars..i think the only common thing i see in the two is that they are both created by Jews and thats it.

:lol What??

George Lucas is Methodist, born and raised. And he never converted. Though he rarely discusses his faith, he did once claim to be "Buddhist Methodist." half-jokingly in an interview. His best friend (Spielberg) is jewish, though.

And Lucas isn't even a Hebrew name at all... it's Scotch-English.

So does this mean that STAR WARS an STAR TREK have absolutely nothing in common, then? :p

One scene, which was very entertaining, but didn't live up to what I expected as the movie lead into it was the Kobiyash Maru test. Based on Wrath of Khan's telling, I imagined Kirk to go through it successfully, but not so cocky about it. It was entertaining to see him sitting there all cool because he knew it would work out, but I imagined that it would have been more trying to act as if he hadn't done anything.

That bothered me too... but if considering his whole motivation for joining Starfleet was different because of the alternate reality, maybe even his attitude would have been different. More of an "f you" move rather than wanting to blow their minds.

I don't think he was called out for cheating since when it was discussed in Wrath of Kahn it came as a surprise.

Just saw the movie tonight with my dad, my brother, and my son. Amazing movie. JJ Abrams is a god amongst mortals. Now bring on the Klingons for the sequel!

Did anyone else think Kirk's ascension to being captain of the Enterprise came astoundingly fast?

I've only watched the movies and some of the early TOS episodes, but I remember Kirk having done a lot more in the academy and on other ships before eventually commanding the Enterprise.

Maybe it's just because of the time restraints associated with making an origin film, or maybe it's that 3-year time lapse in the first hour of the film. I hope they add some detail to those 3 years in the fleet for the sequels.

I just got back from seeing this, and I am in awe. I've only ever been a casual Star Trek fan at best, but this film has certainly converted me. I went with my brother in law, who is a pure die-hard, and his only problem seemed to be the overabundance of classic Trek lines used throughout the film, which were, in his opinion, too forced. Personally, I smiled every time I recognized a line or inflection. Did anyone else catch Scotty's pet Tribble? Ha!

My main gripe had nothing to do with the film itself, but rather the theater I saw it in! Something went wrong with the digital projector right before the previews came on. When the Transformers 2 trailer eventually started, I immediately noticed the color was off - like a wash of yellow had been applied over the screen, causing reds to appear orange, skin tones to appear yellow and blues to be green-ish and muted overall. I figured this little hiccup would be just for the previews, but no - the whole damned film was presented this way! :banghead A dude sitting next to me went out to complain, but he came back muttering that they couldn't/wouldn't do anything about it. I thought I was maybe going insane, but I just rewatched an HD trailer at home, and the difference was night and day! What a crappy way to experience this brilliant film! Now I need to go to a matinee tomorrow just to see it again in the true, vibrant color that was originally intended.

OMFG! I had to contain myself from laughing hysterically before and during the sequence where Kirk parachuted into the atmosphere of Vulcan. Seriously, I was giggling so hard and it would not have been cool of me to laugh out loud -- no one else saw that they were going on a mission with someone in a RED SHIRT! Ok, a RED SUIT! And boom goes the dynamite, Red Suit bit it! Wanted to laugh my fraking ass off!

When I saw Wolverine last week the projector needed pulled back or something because it was blurry as hell. These theaters need to get their ^^^^ right.

AMAZING MOVIE!!!! It was everything I had wished for it to be and more... Cant wait for sequals... the story has endless possibilities now!

This movie made up for the piece of craps Spider-Man 3 and Indy IV!

All of the actors were great! I got over my weird Spock/Sylar thing pretty quick and I thought Bones did the best job out of all of them. The only thing that could have made the film better IMO was to have Shatner do the voice over at the end... but Nemoy still had a powerful effect.

JJ Abrams is turning into something special. Everything he touches is turning into gold!

How do you figure?, TOS was out way before ANH..i don't understand and i mean the movies have naval style combat, even right down to the uniforms, and i always thought each alien species resembled different cultures on earth like the Klingons are Russians,Vulcans and even Ferengi were like Jews, Borg were similar to Nazi's etc..

I'm more talking about the movies than the TV shows. But ILM created the effects for most of the movies and they did all of the effects for TNG.

I have purposely avoided this thread like the plague as I didn't want to have the movie spoiled in any way-- The movie's out and I'm going to write freely because if you don't want it spoiled you should have done likewise-- get out now.

SPOILERS BELOW (it says so in the title of the thread so the spoiler tag be damned)!

J.J. did it. This movie brings back all of the good vibes from watching the original series Saturday morning right before BSG. Back before VCR's being prevalent and thus having to relive STAR WARS through memories and comics (I read the movie comics daily) STAR TREK (and to a lesser extent BSG, BUCK ROGERS, SPACE 1999 etc) allowed the sci fi fan to experience new adventures. I never put STAR TREK in one camp and STAR WARS in another-- they were just all my favourites... and while the PT from George weren't exactly what I had hoped to bring back those nostalgic feelings of Han and Chewie, this STAR TREK did exactly what Lucas failed to do-- Brought back the good and re-energized it to boldly propel it, excuse me, where no filmmaker has gone before.

Too much to write about what I liked-- but here's some random thoughts:

-The opening ten minutes with the USS Kelvin (from the silence of space with bodies being sucked into the unknown to the dropping of the soundtrack to emphasize the emminent sacrifice... wow) brought a lump to my throat and made me see what real sci fi can do-- and should be doing on the screen. From the get-go this movie's got you.

-The casting is superb. No caricatures and yet each actor in their own unique way lovingly brings the characters to life (and this is from someone who has seen every episode of the original series at least twenty times). Urban as McCoy is phenomenal-- It's hard not to compare new Spock to old Spock, but the character works-- And Pine, who I had the most sense of dread with nails Kirk with his own little twists.

-The humour is great and the pacing of the movie (storytelling/action...) is right on. It feels like the original STAR WARS and I won't go into the comparison that many have already made (film starting with a big ship attacking a little ship... farmboy not knowing his destiny... mentor recruits him... rag tag bunch of young folks have to rescue someone from the clutches of the evil doer who has a planet destroyer... funny alien sidekick... etc..etc..etc) but IT WORKS and feels original despite the Joseph Campbell arcs.

-Everything. :lol

The only suggestion I'd have is if you haven't seen the movie yet, read the graphic novel prequel-- The information contained within allows for a much greater enjoyment of the movie (if that's even possible). I'd write more but it's my youngest's first birthday party soon and I've got to get things ready.

Live long.... oh, you know the rest. And I'm so happy that STAR TREK does indeed live again-- just like I enjoyed on those Saturday mornings so long ago.
