The lens flare wasn't that big a deal to me, especially the first go round. I was way too into the movie at that point. And I also like the engineering look, gives it more scope. It's different, but I like that. I used to LIVE on a ship, and I can tell you... there were areas of the ship that I never saw, it was really that big. I also can tell you that there was a vast difference in look and feel of one of the main decks compared to where the Boiler was. So it seemed really realistic to me.

I was a bit conflicted over the real-world look of the ship interior (especially the engine room). One aspect of classic Trek was that everything was very modern and streamlined looking... some of that was lost, but at the same time it still looked good so it ultimately wasn't a problem for me.

I didn't mind the realistic enhancements to the ship (bridge, engine room etc.) but wtf with the aliens? The creatures on the winter planet blah and the 'rip-off' scene from Phantom Menace "always a bigger fish". Over looking dufus scenes like that is was an entertaining movie.

I loved all the aliens. The "bigger fish" scenario has been done long before Phantom Menace too so I didn't mind that at all.

The only thing I didn't really like is who they cast as Scottie.

How about Kirk being sent to that Ice planet at almost the exact same point as Spock.
The odds of that happening must be the same as, I don't know, surviving a nuclear blast in a fridge. :lol

I don't know if somebody posted this already, but I'll do it anyhow

it's a funny comparison between Star Wars A New Hope and the latest Star Trek movie :)

Coincidence or not, who will tell, there are kinda similarities with the oldest Star Wars, but most important, it wasn't something I noticed.
But afther watching that comparison I still don't think it was done intentionally, or was it? :)

I loved the casting. I thought each done an admirable job representing classic characters.

Overall, I do not get the "buzz" on the movie. It was good, good characters, good acting but the story had problems IMO. I think Wolverine and Star Trek were both enjoyable and I will own both on BR. I give Star Trek a slightly higher score than Wolverine but IMO neither lived up to the hype.

I guess there is Terminator:Salvation.

Sergeant Nicholas Angel does not approve of your complaint.

I liked Simon Pegg as Scottie. He added a liveliness and humor to various parts of the movie and his banter with that little alien thing was often cute.

Yeah, they really did an excellent job with casting. McCoy especially. I just didn't care for Pegg. Compared to the others he seemed to poorly represent a young Scottie to me.

I think a lot of the buzz comes from the fact that this could have been a huge disaster. Rebooting such beloved characters from a 40 year old TV show and then doing such a good job with it, I can see why there's all the hype.

I'm not a Trekkie but I caught a lot of the tie ins and throwbacks to the series. All very well done and very cool.

:lol Oh well. I've never seen any of Pegg's other movies. He may be a fine actor but just not right for the role in my eyes.

Jimmy Doohan was a great actor(even if he put on the fake scottish accent) which i hear pissed off Scottish people since he was English or something but, anyway..Simon Pegg brings a new comical liveliness to the character that i can apprciated and i am sure if James Doohan was alive he would think the same.

That's fine. When he was first cast as Scottie, I couldn't see why. In my eyes his performance in Trek wasn't mirroring the old Scottie but was original and funny enough that I didn't mind.

You really haven't seen any of Pegg's other movies? Not even Shaun of the Dead? Btw the Sergeant Nicholas Angel quip in the previous post is a nod to the movie Hot Fuzz.

McCoy and Kirk were my two favorite characters.

Urban nailed McCoy "My ex-wife got the planet in the divorce. I have nothing left except my bones." delivered with the same crappy attitude as the original. Great stuff.

Even "cumonass" likes it! (Though he still uses his YouTube to blast & hate the other movies :lol )

I didn't really notice the lens flare, but I just got the TOS series 1 HD - and the menu has lens flare all over the place.

And if you don't have the TOS new series release - get it now - the documentary on how they restored and redid the music and effects is fantastic. I wish all our old classic 60s TV shows could go through this kind of restoration.

I loved Bones and Scotty in the new flick.

I really wish Urban had more screen time to better establish the freindship between McCoy and Kirk. Everything he said felt just like TOS Bones.

Pegg had some great deliveries, especially after the Spock/Kirk fight where everyone was standing stunned, and he just started fidgeting in the background before the "I like this ship" line. Great stuff.

I can't wait to watch it again.

is it just me or wouldn't most of you just ^^^^^ slap him if you encountered his dumb ass.

He's really gotten L(oser) spelled all over him. Get a life.

If you look at the original series, Scotty was often a comic relief character. I think Pegg was a brilliant bit of casting. He doesn't evoke the character in the same way that Urban does with McCoy, but he "feels" right in the role.

Yeah, that figures he'd be a "TREKKIE"...

(no offense to the rest of the Trekkie population though...he's an embarrassment to your ranks...)

Here's something interesting-Paul McGillion who plays Dr. Beckett on Stargate Atlantis was originally going to play Scotty. He actually looks like Scotty and he's actually Scottish so he has the accent:

But they then decided to get Simon Pegg (which Simon Pegg is pretty cool) to play Scotty, Abrams was a fan of Pegg so that's probably why. But they still had McGillion as the officer who read off the list of their ship assignments and then told Kirk he was grounded.
