Although I still really liked this movie and consider myself a pretty hardcore Scifi fan... to prove it; I thought the Transformers movie sucked ass :lecture

Well it's not just hardcore sci fi fans who feel that way. I am a passing fan of sci fi, and I hated everything about the Transformers movie, and loved Avatar.

Im sorry but i loved transformers 1, it was good, but as for number 2 well, it represents the number 2 very greatly becuase felt like sombody just craped that out and polished it lol.

I found no use for either Transformers and I am excited Spiderman is getting the re-boot. I thought Avatar was a Fx triumph with a re-hashed story and predictable outcome.

It isn't to say I didn't like or enjoy either the Spiderman trilogy or Avatar but I am not on the full Cameron or Rami geek bus. How is that for a die-hard Sci-Fi fan. Did I lose my exclusive membership card :D

Im not taking things seriously, well maybe i am since i cant tell when someones joking or not on a computer.

It appears that more 'normal' people - by normal I mean majority of the population - love the movie more than hardcore sci-fi fans do (including us women who like Terminator and Aliens more). It's like "sci-fi lite". It's interesting.

I think you hit on something, Dusty. And it's these people (the non-"geeks") who I think are making of the majority of the "Avatard" population. It's like the TWLIGHT moms. These types get into these movies and go bonkers. They don't know how to react or behave, because they're mostly "new" to this fandom thing. They also don't seem to have any tact or know when to dial it down... they probably need to feel some shame the way every "geek" has when they've gone overboard (well, the sane ones). Right now, they don't feel it. It's the only way to explain how someone can be depressed, long to actually live in Pandora, and then openly admit it to others.

The phenomenon surrounding AVATAR has nothing to do with making film history... it's a sociological one. We're watching people lose their flipping minds over this thing.

:lol I know....sorry. I'm hoping he'll stop taking things seriously by the end of the week, with my 237 Step program to not being SO SRS. :monkey1

Children! Enough. You're both going to end up losing recess.

I just discovered this today too. A woman I work with who is from Romania, and has never seen Star Wars, has seen Avatar twice. I would never have thought that it appealed to the same audience as Titanic, but that could explain it's quick rise.

It's actually very similar to Titanic; same type of formula. I could see that going in, after reading the scriptment. But I NEVER thought they'd fall for blue cat aliens in the way they fell for Leo and Kate! Color me confused. (but PLEASE don't color me blue ;))

Eh. I think it's a different phenomenon altogether. This happened for The Dark Knight, and then people got over it. It happened for The Phantom Menace, and then people got over it. It happened for Titanic, and then people got over it. Sometimes you're just lucky enough to ride a bubble. Eventually it pops, and people move on.

Everyone's going to look back on Twilight and wonder what they were smoking, too.

All of Cameron's movies have had a Love story that has been important to the plot

Terminator, Kyle and Sarah
Aliens, Ryple's maternal love for Newt
The Abyss, Lindsey Brigman and Virgil 'Bud' Brigman rekindle love for each other.
Terminator 2, John Connor grows to love the T-800 as Father/Big Brother
Titanic, Well you get the picture
I won't include Piranha 2 as that don't count

I think that's why most of Cameron's films are not just popular with Sci-fi enthusiasts, but with everyday people too.

Sure while a love story thrown into the mix will drag along the ladies i think there's also a bit more to it.

I cant recall seeing a film recently which is so enviromentally conscious where guilt plays a big factor.I know the scene where they brought down the tree not only moved me to emotions of anger and sadness but made me think "yep thats exactly how it is,thats what us humans are doing to our planet all the bloody time".

This was the scene where i heard a few of the ladies tearing up and would have left the biggest impression when talking to their friends after.

Looking forward to the Blu.

This is why avatar wins !!

your over positive comments about everything have become a farce. If at least you were being sarcastic from time to time....:monkey4
