O please the dark knight was agaist the mummy, and some monkey movie, it didnt have competition

It was released during blockbuster season, which has the toughest competition of the year.

where did you hear that people didnt love the character's ? People love the characters from what im seeing.

I'm sure some people did love the characters and story. Those people don't seem to be participating in any of the discussions I've encountered about this film. Most of the media response and viewer discussion I've come across (online and in person) is about the FX. The same thing happened with Transformers, so this is hardly a controversial observation.

who goes to a movie 5 times and not like the characters.

I guess people really loved Jar Jar Binks.

They "prove" nothing of the sort.

Except a lot of people liked the film.

With everything Avatar has accomplished (Best Picture, breaking records worldwide, high critical acclaim) you don't think any of it can be attributed to people just thinking it is a quality film?

You seem like one of those people who think The Dark Knight was only a success because of Heath Ledger's death. If a film is quality, and there is good word of mouth, people will watch it.

I never said they didn't.

Of course some of it can be attributed to those factors, just as some of the box office can be attributed to the extraneous surcharges and the novelty of 3D. Lots of people liked Transformers 2. I don't think anyone would be shocked by the suggestion it was a box office smash because people liked seeing giant robots hit each other rather than audiences believing the characters and scripting were on par with Citizen Kane.

You seem like one of those people who has imaginary arguments instead of paying attention to what is actually being said. Only one of us has even mentioned Heath Ledger...

Who was he, and what else did you have to do?

2 Dragons ....

:duh

If you can't see what I was getting at then I cannot be of anymore help. Here's a hint: It's about explaining a film's success.

Apparently AVATAR has already toppled the all time international and has about 50 mil to go to beat domestic. For the 6th week in a row it has won at the box office. Made another 100mill over the weekend overseas. It could reach the 2 billion mark very soon! Crazy

Since they charge so much to see this thing in 3D, it should win.

They should go strictly by how many tickets are sold. I'd like to see that list rather than how much money they made.

It's the 3D factor, the buzz factor, and no real competition. The 3d's extra price at the BO is giving Avatar a quicker run to the top than predicted. If you take inflation (which means ticket prices) into account though, Titanic is ranked 6 all time with Gone with the Wind at the top and the original Star Wars in second. However pure gross without taking into a factor ticket prices and so forth makes Avatar king in a few weeks over Titanic. James Cameron's Avatar 2 can gross even more money than this one in quicker time as sequels tend to do every single time if the first movie does well.. That will be the only movie able to topple this one for a long while...

And by the time Avatar 2 comes out, the ticket prices will go up even higher.

Box office Mojo has a listing of the top grossing films after they've been adjusted for inflation. Avatar's currently in #26; and Gone with the Wind is well into first place. However, a lot of the other top films have benefited from multiple releases.

So to get an accurate score you'd have to go by ticket sales, right? Is there a list anywhere online that you know of? I have heard countless times that Gone with the Wind still sold more tickets and hense still the most successful. I could be wrong.

Edit: Box Office Mojo then?

At least with Avatar you'd have to... inflation doesn't quite work because there is the extra $2-$3 that most are paying to see it in 3D.

I think with the rest it works out fine as all the dollars brought in are either adjusted up, or down depending on when it was released; at least that's how I understand it. But it would be interesting to see if there is data for number of tickets.

If you can't have a conversation without making up the other person's viewpoint, you're not really a help in the first place. ;)

Here's a hint: #3274

That is correct.

Had nothing to do with being the most hyped movie of the year right?

And you know you dont have to LIKE the characters to enjoy the movie right? Some movies make you hate the character. But they also have a great story to go with it.

You really take things way to seriously on the internet. I did too. Just pretend everything everyone says is a joke.
