WOW. Hope the movie turns out as awesome as they say...

It's a 3D movie people will look back on in years to come to comment on how it transformed cinema.

In recent 3D releases such as Beowulf, the effects were impressive but the computer-generated humans looked far from real.

In Avatar, everything feels real - and it's as if you are immersed in the action.

And what action.

Are there CG humans in Avatar? I mean, closeups, not stunt-cg humans.

Not sure, I know Quaritch in the amp suit has a cg face. But if you have a closeup you dont need a cg human face. But it would be interesting to see how realistic they could make it. Remember the CG arnold from Terminator Salvation

Here's what Spielberg thought of the film

Steven Spielberg Gives James Cameron’s “Avatar”
Two Thumbs Up
By Lauren A.E. Schuker | Source: wsj.com

December 10, 2009 - Roughly a week remains until “Avatar,” the hotly-anticipated sci-fi epic from “Titanic” director James Cameron, hits theaters. But News Corp.’s 20th Century Fox has already offered Hollywood’s top brass at least one clandestine screening.

Sources close to filmmaker Steven Spielberg say he watched the film last Friday on Fox’s studio lot in Los Angeles and loved it. “He flipped for it,” says a person close to the acclaimed director.

Gearing up for next weekend’s release date, Fox is hoping that mainstream audiences react to the film just like Spielberg did. The movie’s plot, an original story about a disabled soldier who leaves Earth for a far-off planet called Pandora, presents a challenge to audiences inured to sequels, pre-quels, and films based on pre-fabricated properties, such as “Transformers,” “Twilight” and the coming “Sherlock Holmes,” starring Robert Downey, Jr.

Cameron’s last feature film effort, “Titanic,” grew into a mega-hit at the box office, grossing more money than any film in history (without adjusting for inflation). Before any “Avatar” footage was screened to the public, fanboys and movie buffs were hailing the movie, calling it the cinematic game-changer of the decade. But when Fox released the first trailer to the film online, this past August, the footage elicited a more mixed reaction, with some audiences mocking its blue characters and criticizing the images for having a cartoonish appearance. Others joked that it looked like a “Jar Jar Binks’ Family Reunion” or “Dances with Wolves in Space.”

Few people outside of Fox have seen the finished production which runs between two and a half hours and two hours and 40 minutes, and likely costs more than $300 million. Much of the film’s fate lies in the hands of audiences. If Spielberg is any indication, though, Fox may have the hit it has been hoping for on its hands.

The critics are starting to come out of the London premiere. They had to sign documents that they couldnt write about Avatar till Monday but here is what they have tweeted thus far-

Not sure of the rules on language in the forum so I apologize in advance- this is verbatim from cinematical.com

From Twitter:

@petershall: "The AVATAR buzz is an understatement. That movie was unbelievable."

@dmann11: "Holy effing crap!!! Avatar was FREAKING AWESOME KICK ASS SWEET!!!!!"

@TheGate: "For the record 'Avatar' was worth the $400 million, and no it is not even remotely "vomit inducing".

@gholson: "Spectacular. A visual feast and the new benchmark in cinematic world building."

@chasewhale: "Just finished AVATAR. Special effects were top notch. The movie ran a little long for my likings but I liked it!"

@comingsoonnet" "Okay, about Avatar?.... WOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOW! Unbelievable... amazing."

@MikePereira21: Was blown away by Avatar! For 150 minutes, I was a kid again. Thank you James Cameron! BTW, the groundbreaking 3D was mindblowing."

@rejects: "I'm not supposed to talk about Avatar... That said, it was a spectacular experience. Like nothing I've seen before."

More after the jump ...

@markwalters74: "Just saw AVATAR. Not allowed to talk about it yet. Not allowed to say how it's an amazing visual feast, or that Jimmy C's still got the gift."

@massawyrm: "So I just got back from a movie. It was pretty great...if by pretty great I mean OMFGHOLY????ING????OMGOMGOMG. Because that's what it was ... Oh, and if I hear one more "Dances with Wolves" joke I'm gonna throw up in my mouth. Has no one seen DUNE? Because this was DUNE. In a good way ...You have officially been to your last Con in which blue people, spoken Navi and the word "hometree" were absent."

@firstshowing: James Cameron is a freakin' genius! I can't say much but wow, I loved it. #Avatar was phenomenal, pretty much blew me away

@DrewAtHitFix: I think the most accurate way to say it would be OMFGOMFGOMFG. Or words that effect. #avatar

@EDouglasWW: I'll take my chances with Fox legal.... Avatar was amazing, I loved it!

@rejects It's impossible to say that something is a "gamechanger" or that it will "redefine" movies. But I can say that I've seen something I've never seen before. And that I've seen something that shows the potential for the craft of filmmaking in this new century.

@sizemore So *that* was James Cameron's AVATAR. Holy ????ing ????.

@JonTT Avatar = outstanding. Really. Truly. See it. Soon.

@slashfilm I'm not allowed to say anythng about what I thought of Avatar, but saw it in a screening room with neill blomkamp, who didn't sign an NDA. He loved it... I will say this, it's hard to disagree with Neil :)

@LarsenOnFilm First Impression: Avatar. Stronger story than I expected, amazing visuals. Still no need for 3-D though. Full review next week.

@simonpegg Avatar ........................ tweetless. Just tweetless in the best possible way.

I am trying to go into this movie relatively unspoiled and without insane levels of hype setting me up for a letdown. I just want to see a well made sci-fi film.

One of the guys who runs marketsaw.com saw the movie lastnight. Here is what he thought about it

Avatar: My First Thoughts

Michael here. Wow. WowWowWowWow! I've just returned from Pandora, and my mind is reeling from the experience. I'll need to see this at least three times just to soak it all in.

First off, Cameron has succeeded with flying colors at creating never-before-seen action spectacle married to a powerful story with characters you care about. The film is filled with applause-worthy moments that gave me goosebumps. Avatar is firing on all cylinders, and when the music kicks in and you are seeing something so totally mind-boggling that you just have to smile, you will realize the power of what Cameron has created.

The 3D is absolutely spectacular. The seats in front of me melted away: I was in the action. Pandoran bugs, critters, Na'vi, and avatars surrounded me. Cameron makes masterful use of the stereospace. From the scene where Jake leaves cryo to a woodsprite landing on Neytiri's arrow, the 3D enevelops you. The quality of the 3D cinematography is lightyears beyond that of any other 3D movie I've ever seen.

The Na'vi and Avatars are simply real. Cameron and WETA have leapfrogged over Davey Jones to create beings that give spectacular performances. And this is vital as the pulsing heart of the movie is the love story between Jake and Neytiri.

As for the action: nothing can prepare you for the final battle. I don't want to spoil anything, but it is just so gigantic with such a sense of scale and scope that it left me dying to see it again right away. And I can say that you will love the Great Leonopteryx. I could watch hours of the winged giant taking out Samsons by smashing them against cliffsides. The action is shot and cut together perfectly, and it all has stakes since you come to care about the characters.

I could go on and on. Cameron has put images on the screen that have never been seen before. My mind is still partly there, on this photorealistic planet where everything from the tiniest bug to the ferns to rocks to the critters simply *lives*. I really do feel like I have been on some sort of hallucinogenic trip. The 3D combined with the unprecedented accomplishment of creating a world from the ground up has left me shaken in the best possible way.

I want to go back right now.

It's great that the film is getting so much positive buzz, which ramps up the hype. I just hope it doesn't elevate expectations to an unreachable height.

The second the first overly exaggerated negative rant/review from a popular source comes in, there might be an explosion so destructive that it destroy the Internet itslef. No joke.
