I just bought tickets for me and a buddy to see it again tomorrow morning at 10:15, this time in IMAX (vs. just digital 3-D).

This may be my favorite movie of all time, and that list is currently shared by LOTR trilogy and Braveheart.

I haven't seen a movie 2X in a row in a theatre since I was a kid.

Re: I saw AVATAR in 3D!

do u guys think soldiers will see this movie and ashamed of themselves, for choosing a job to kill?

I thought it was really good. Solid 8 out of 10 for me. It would have been better in Imax. What an awesome world he created. The effects were amazing. The story was simple and predictable but still good.

Agreed, and I also saw in 3D and am going to watch it tomorrow in IMAX. This movie is a friggin masterpiece. I didn't get caught up in the hype and had my doubts it was going to be worth the money to make, but I haven't been as moved by a movie since LOTR.

It's possible. I know this movie included some "touchy" subject matter (I'll leave it at that and keep the politics out of this), that made me feel anger towards the humans and military characters of the story. And I'm a conservative. :lol

I wouldn't be surprised if environmentalists and anti-war groups reference this movie a lot in the future.

I guess I'm stupid, it wasn't that predictable for me.

I wasn't expecting their tree to come crashing down. If I was the sort of person who cried at movies (which I'm not, I'm a robot), this movie would have brought a tear to my eye.

I thought the story was pretty original. I guess parts of it were a little bit cliche' but what isn't nowadays? All the messages to learn and live by have been told in some fashion or another. At least this story wrapped a magical world and characters around that message.

haha, I went and saw this with my brother in law ( Army Sgt.) We both loved the movie and Im pretty sure he's perfectly fine with his chosen profession.

(posted this elsewhere b4 remembering there's a dedicated avatar thread)

watched it thurs nite in 3D. here's my 2 cents'...

on a purely technical level, this is a masterpiece. cameron has succeeded wildly beyond expectations in realizing a fully-formed and intricate world that is completely believable and thus, wholly immersive. in fact, i'd go as far as to say the 3D isn't even necessary for the viewing experience. it enhances your immersion in this world, but the genuine sense of awe and wonder that consumes you as you soak in all the minute details are more than sufficient in good ol' 2D. it is just mind-blowing when you realize that everything from the flora & fauna to the mecha, are actually all non-existent and willed into "reality" by cameron and his army of technicians.

and whatever scorn about the look of the na'vi becomes a non-issue a few minutes into watching them onscreen. they are as good as living, breathing beings with real emotions and distinct personalities. i absolutely adored neytiri. she is both spirited and sensual, which is due to equal contributions by the cg artists as well as zoe saldana's performance. in fact, she far outshines sam worthington's jake sully in their every scene together.

and the geek in me was pretty happy to see sigourney back in a cameron film. she still rocks!

if only the story held up to the brilliance of the visuals. at best, the story is predictible and overly-familiar. those who summed it up as "dances with aliens" are pretty spot on. u can pretty much tell what's coming next with every turn of the plot. and some of the action is a little underwhelming, to be honest.

(eg: the final showdown between quaritch and jake---i was expecting something a little more substantial and clever. it's a good scene but nothing classic.)

not cameron's strongest work in edge-of-your seat action set pieces. but still light years better than indecipherable crap like transformers2. i can best sum up what cameron did with the story in avatar as "reinventing The Cliche". he took tired themes/characters and relocated them to a darn interesting environment. so in that way, it doesn't seem so bad after all. and it's certainly not the train wreck the naysayers predicted.

on the whole, i say this is a good, solid film, but not a great one. to me, it sits somewhere in the middle of his body of work.

Was it wrong of me to be checking out the female Na'vi's breasts that were on screen? :huh

Actually 3.5 million just at midnight. On track to rake in well over 80 MIL for the weekend.

That's what I was referencing. The 26.3 million for New Moon was just midnight showings as well. With these weak numbers this will have to be like Titanic if it wants to make it's money back. That's going to be tough without the little tweenie girl demographic wanting to see it 1000 times.

That scene definitely made me tear up. I also teared up a few other times as well, although I can't remember to which specific events at the moment.

Even fighting a torn contact and tears running down my face because of it all I can say is this was visual ecstasy. My wife and really enjoyed it and I have full intentions on seeing this again. The colors were so vivid and looked so real. They did a stellar job creating pandora. I will agree the score was so so and could have made the movie a tad bit better but I'm loving what I saw!!

personally i prefer thandie newton, but zoe is gorgeous too. and based on her performance in avatar, a very talented actress as well. in some ways, i believe acting via motion capture is even more challenging than "normal" acting.

and yeah, neytiri is sexy. my date noticed her nipples and she started looking out for them in every scene!

One last pic that wasn't linking up for some reason, hopefully it works here.

I didn't realize this is the same girl from the new Star Trek movie.

My personal review:

I was like a little kid the whole time watching. But I am someone who has always marvelled at the special effects in movies and appreciates the artistry behind it.
I love directors and movie makers who take chances, who just want you to enjoy the movie and escape to another world, or magical place.

Visuals - I don't even have to say much here. It's pretty obvious to everyone that it's perhaps the most visually stunning movie to date, with the best use of CGI and animation, I've ever seen.
It's a gorgeous movie from beginning to end.

3D - Now here I am split. Now don't get me wrong, I love the 3D. But at the same time, I could have lived without it. Mr. Cameron - you had me at the visuals and cgi. The 3D was cool, but not fully needed. I mean, we have to get used to it without it once we get it on blu ray.
The 3D effect is good use in things like the forest, or when something is moving from your point of view, or to give a great sense of height etc. In regular scenes, even though it's there, it's just not a big tool.

Story - It was fine for me. Nothing new, but I enjoyed it and he told it nicely. The villian was even really good. And the acting was acceptible. Not bad at all, even if not Oscar worthy material.
I myself got sucked in enough, that I felt for these aliens and even got a little emotional myself in some of the scenes or what happened. So it succeeded on that level for me.

Overall, it was just the most impressive thing I've seen on the screen. I was wide eyed the whole movie, marvelling at every scene. Wanting to believe these guys were real. And at times the whole world felt like it could exist.

I am going to see it again Monday!!
