3D - Now here I am split. Now don't get me wrong, I love the 3D. But at the same time, I could have lived without it. Mr. Cameron - you had me at the visuals and cgi. The 3D was cool, but not fully needed. I mean, we have to get used to it without it once we get it on blu ray.
The 3D effect is good use in things like the forest, or when something is moving from your point of view, or to give a great sense of height etc. In regular scenes, even though it's there, it's just not a big tool.

To me that is why it works. There are no "look it's 3D moments." For the most part it just adds depth to the whole presentation and helps suck you in.

Re: I saw AVATAR in 3D!

Just watched this in 3D also! Best movie I've seen in a loooong time! We're driving about 100 miles tomorrow to watch it again in IMAX this time. We almost went to the 2nd showing tonight...

11/10

It did, but that's what I'm saying too. After a while, it wore off and it really wasn't needed for me to still love this movie and the visual world that was created.
I just don't think it's the game changer some thing it is going to become.
Maybe once the 3D tv's are here (which are coming by the way), and everything is in 3D then yeah, go ahead, put 3D in everything, whether it's subtle depth or in your face.

has anyone seen both 3d and regulat yet? if you knew you would see both which on would you want to see first?

If you saw it 2d first then seeing it in 3d next would be like a whole new experience the second time where as maybe its best to see it the way intended (3d) the first time?

I don't think I am going to see this in 2D until blu ray. I am going to try to see this in digital 3D to see how it compares to Imax.

Not only a great movie, but a great experience. 3d was sick, the effects were great, story was very good (alittle cliche and has been done, but had alot of freshness and a few"Ooo ?????" parts) and the movie really made you feel for the characters. I didnt want it to end, even though it was almost 3 hours i wasn't tired of it at all, even though i walked into the movie feelin like crap from a cold. Solid 8.5 out of 10 in my book.....

That's what I was referencing. The 26.3 million for New Moon was just midnight showings as well. With these weak numbers this will have to be like Titanic if it wants to make it's money back. That's going to be tough without the little tweenie girl demographic wanting to see it 1000 times.

Of course the teenie market was finished seeing the movie after a week or two-Doesnt appeal to as broad an audience. I think the love story is enough to draw in the female crowd. I don't think it will beat titanic at this point but I do think it will be second. We shall see.

The game changer is the new 'emotion capture' and the 3D fusion cam/virtual cam techniques. It will change movies in some way

I honestly think this will end up in the 300 million range. I think 400 million will be nearly impossible. I think it really all depends how much of a drop it has after the second week.

I hope we get 3D that looks this good in more live action movies. It definitely was a big step up from the live action 3D in the Harry Potter movies and Journey to the Center of the Earth.

Re: I saw AVATAR in 3D!

I agree 11/10. I went and saw it earlier today and I liked it so much I talked my wife into going to IMAX with me tomorrow. An absolutely perfect film. JC now has 3 of my top 10 favorite movies to his credit!

Its tracking to make over 80 mill this weekend

It will be playing in imax for at least 3 months-that is what has already been slated

It going to need some serious legs to get to second all time. If it does 80 this weekend like they are predicting it will need to do at least 50-60 next to have a shot at 400-500 million. It will all depend how well Sherlock Holmes does. I can see that movie cutting into Avatar's business as that is a film that will appeal to nearly everyone too.

This movie may not beat a lot of movies, even this year. The theater we went in at prime time was only half full or maybe a little over.

If this doesn't make a ton of money, it's not so much because it's a failure. It's just something new, that alot of people are not 100% sure about the film.
But because it does kick ass and turned out to be a good movie, if it garners a strong following, like other movies, the sequel is the one that will be anticipated and make more money. lol

This was the first 3-D movie I've ever scene, if you excuse the crappy attempts back in the 80's... and Captain EO. It was a completely different sort of experience, as I hadn't experienced 3D on the big screen, and add that to the visual smorgasbord Cameron provided, I couldn't take my eyes off the screen.

and I'll be doing it in the reverse order. I'm really looking forward to the IMAX simply because of the screen size (I think).

I think once people go back to work and start talking about this, it will take off like wildfire, and get others to go see it that maybe normally wouldn't have.
