Just like Titanic, word or mouth and repeat viewings will aid it in making its money back. Its a longer film. Don't forget though-you can charge more for 3D screenings.

Then tie in the merchandising and eventually dvd/blu ray. Trust me, they are going to be fine.

I would like to be wrong, but I just don't know if many people are going to see this over and over outside the hardcore people like us. I will probably see it 3 times, but I doubt the average moviegoer will. As you said it will definitely be profitable in the end regardless, with all the dvd/blu ray and merchandising sales.

About to see it in 3-d. At theatre now. IMAX was sold out for all weekend, but at least I get digital 3D. Hope it's good, I've been avoiding the reviews and spoilers so I go in without an opinion already.

I can't believe that New Moon did eight times the business on its midnight showings. That's disgraceful.

Titanic was slow in raking in the money generating it's profit over a long period of time, Avatar will be no different.
New Moon blew it's load so quickly over a weekend because of all the teen girls wanting to see all the handsome bodies and that Pattinson dude. He freaks me out by the way.
I think there are more teenage girls in love with Frankenstein Pattinson than there are geeks of this world!
Anyway, I'm off tonight to see Avatar in 3D. Man, I'm pumped!

I don't care about what the movie rakes in, all the lemmings can go ahead and make crap like New Moon big money(just goes to show how many people have no taste), same thing with TDK all the Heath bandwagoners made that movie huge(when Begins was better), they probally never saw a Batman flick ever,let alone read a comic book.

I am pretty optimistic now for this movie, aside from my dislike of character designs and the choice of song but, its when the credits roll?, then F it! not a problem.A great Science Fiction movie to end 2009 with a bang, even if its not in the minds of the masses(though i am sure it will be soon enough) I can't wait to see it now.

I never listen to critics. If it's not subtitled or someone isn't playing a retarded person in it, they don't care for it.

I really thought Dark Knight was a step up from Begins. The only thing Dark Knight didn't have over Begins was atmosphere. It needed some rain and some bats.

Um, you mean he's using real-life concepts and paralleling them in his movies? Oh, you're right, what a terrible "flaw".

Dude, you don't have to agree with the message to enjoy it. I don't agree with the message in Chronicles of Narnia but it's still an enjoyable story.

It's really too bad that people will make too much of the parallels in our own history - and I'm not just talking about the US here by any means, colonialism is much bigger than that - and have that affect how they watch or are able to enjoy this film.

I think most critics are actually giving this quite good reviews, at least from what I've read. It's got an 83% on Rotten Tomatoes right now.

I agree with you, in that an action movie (or comedy for that matter) can still be great despite being canned by critics, but when critics LOVE an action movie, well, it's usually a pretty damn good flick!

I think it has a tiny bit of Dances with wolves(I actual love this movie and have the 4 hour version on DVD ) with a dash Pocahontas in it and a sprinkling of Return of the Jedi, but It's easy to compare any movie to other movies if you want to.
Take District 9, The Fly meets Alien Nation meets Escape to Witch Mountain.
At the end of the day AVATAR is an amazing movie that will go on to be a classic for years to come.
Your jaw will hit the floor as soon as you see the first 3D scenes of the movie. I would compare that feeling to when I first saw the Star Destroyer fly over head in a new hope. Oops! I'm comparing again
