Edgar Rice Burroughs created the character 100 years ago. Many filmmakers such as Lucas and Cameron have been inspired by the books and have incorporated pieces of the lore into their films over the years. But the general public isn't really familiar with the character or books from a century ago.

Hence "Before STAR WARS... Before AVATAR... There was... JOHN... CARTER... ... ...of mars"

I'll be really upset if we don't see a sequel. This was such a great movie. Simple. Pure. Fun! I'm going to see it again tomorrow and recommended it to all my friends who didn't want to see it because the trailers sucked.:(

Someone posted this earlier, but it wouldn't surprise me if execs and such were siphoning money out of this project and thats why it cost so much.

I am really surprised at the amount they spend on this movie. It's a great movie but it sure doesn't feels like a 200 million movie.

I agree, the movie is outstanding but i feel like the budget numbers are inflated. This number probly includes Disneys lackluster marketing campaign and other fees.

Solid movie though im looking for the books but couldnt find it at my local library!

im Pi$$ed people are saying this is a flop! :gah:

I guess that's Hollywood accounting for you. My film lecture once told me that if Hollywood have their way, all movies will be flop just so they can skip paying royalties. Forest Gump is one perfect example. That's why we never see a sequel because the author felt that he cannot in good conscience sell the sequel rights of his book to a movie that never made any money. It's basically a _____ you to hollywood for screwing him out of his share of the profit.

I mean this movie won best picture but due to Hollywood accounting is instead s flop.

Best Picture doesn't always mean box office success. The Artist and The Hurt Locker made only $17 and $32 million each.

I am not sure where you got the numbers cause The Artist made 42m in USA alone and has a worldwide gross of 114m. For a movie made for only 15m I say it's a phenomenal success.

Hurt Locker also made 50m for it's worldwide box office and I say that is a big success considering it's modest budget on 15m.

That's why we should not expect studios to take any chances or risks on new or unfamiliar properties in the near future. We are going to keep getting remakes and reboots and film versions of old TV shows because the studios want some sort of familiar element to their films with a reasonable budget. It will be a while before we get another big budget sci-fi/fantasy that isn't a sequel or remake, but we will get a recycled movie version of Alf or Golden Girls or Quantum Leap or Mork and Mindy.

However, John Carter has already earned about $180 million worldwide after two weeks. So it's not going to be the colossal flop that its detractors want it to be.

exactly!
a]this whole Remake/reboot/sequel hellish nightmare we are going through is kinda our own fault,
but I blame the studios too,
