So Disney lost $200 million on this film, whats it's current box office take? Hard to believe something like this got so much money, usually it's a summer blockbuster sequel when it's that expensive. Not the first in a series, obscure subject, already been done before plot, risky type movie.

As far as I know, the movie cost about $250 million, plus another $50-100 million on marketing. So far, it has made $180 million worldwide. It is unusual that they spent that much money on an untested property. They won't be doing it again any time soon.

Just my 2 cents. I had very loow expectations about this movie. I was equally pissed that Disney didn't show up at Comic Con, so JCM didn't get previewed. And the trailers just looked plain bland and uninviting.

I purposefully didn't want to watch it the first weekend because I was expecting it to flop and get bad reviews. I saw all the critics reviews about how uninspiring it was.

And then, last Friday my co-worker said it stayed true to the books which I had no plans to read. And THAT piqued my interest.

I decided to watch the late show last Sunday. And then I was blown away. Disney majorly messed up the marketing of this one. This was an epic in the making. I want to go back to Barsoom.

I have a personal feeling this will be the movie to beat for a summer blockbuster. It resonated with me that much. Disney bet the wrong horse to be their summer hit. Some movie called The Avengers.

Definitely a 3D Bluray purchase for me.

On an interesting note, I immediately IMDB'd Lynn Collins, and it turns out she was in the first season of True Blood. Looks like I need to rewatch those scenes again because we were given a PG-13 version of Dejah Thoris in the movie. This movie was pure escapism at its core. Reminds me of how I felt when I watched Raiders. I give this an easy 9 out of 10.

There's only one flaw I saw: what happens if someone disturbs your earthly body while you're in Barsoom? I mean worlds change quickly, so at some point the surroundings will get disturbed at the least. Also, how was it that Therns don't get exposed to the same treatment when they do astral travel?

This thing has me hooked that I decided to start reading the first book via Kindle.

What do you expect from poor marketing and naysayer pundits called Reviewers? Wait for the word-of-mouth to spread. If anything, this will be the sleeper of the year.

Blade Runner and the Thing in 1982 bombed...but they were great...This will have I hope a big cult following...I pray for a sequel too to this great movie...loved the beginning and end earth scenes too...bluray must get and hopefully with tons of extras etc...I read all the books almost 40 years ago and reread the first 2 before seeing this...That novel was so ahead of its time...I compare him to HG Wells and Verne...maybe even throw a splash of howard and Lovecraft...The books are excellent and Lucas and many sci fi film makers I bet got many ideas from this incredible series written back in 1912...The film was done very well...On one last note that fight scene when JC and Woola fight an entire Barsoom army I could not help myself but think about JRR Tolkien's HURIN being the last man standing at his battle with Morgoths army in the Silmarrilion..It sent chills down my spine...I really enjoyed this film

:yess::yess: :exactly: :goodpost:

I've seen the movie twice, and the fight between Carter/Woola and the desert Tharks broke me up both times. Easily the most emotional part of the film for me.

I've pretty much given up hope that this movie will be viewed as anything other than a disappointment. That being said, it is easily in the top five of my all time favorite fantasy/sci-fi films of all time.

I agree and
Conan couldnt be more prouder of that fight...It was great...Just wish this was a longer film...

Out of everyone that I knew personally that saw this film the biggest complaint that anybody had is that it wasnt longer and wished they couldve explained more ...I hope this kicks ass on dvd moneywise on sales

I thought the length was fine, but I definitely wouldn't mind a longer directors cut on Blu-ray...

That was my biggest problem. Which is a good problem really.

Yeah i read that too, from what i've heard people enjoyed the film. Shame really that a sequel probably wont happen

....and yet TF2 did :slap

Because everyone knows what a Transformer is. Not many people knew what John Carter of Mars was.

Seriously. People don't see movies that they don't know any more. They don't give new things a try. Unless there is something that they know about in the film.

very good point...how many folks under the age of 25 know who John Wayne was or Abbott and Costello, Laurel and Hardy, Charleton Heston etc etc...many nowaday are afraid to try new things whether its film or food etc...good post

Watched JC for the third time yesterday. Very disappointed that this movie is doing as bad as it is.

Convinced a friend to go that had absolutely zero interest in seeing this movie, and he loved it. First thing he said was that he couldn't understand all the negative reviews JC has received-and he reads all kinds of reviews.

But, movies like Twilight and Hunger Games will rake in the dough no matter if their good or bad. As always, the world is backwards...
