my ex-house mate's kid, who openly use his ipad with all the cool shat movies and internet porn(crazy kid plays it with the volume too). he was just 9 when i last saw him.

what was i doing when i was 9....i was out there in the sand, dirt and mud. climbing trees and shat.

i sure did not have the luxury of internet porn when i was his age.

the problem is not only internet porn but shock sites and crap like 4chan. I'm sure a lot of us took a peek at a porn movie when we were young (actually my friends had a magazine when I was like 6)
But I think the biggest problem is giving kids 10 and younger access to the internet. I don't know but I think that if they were allowed to play on the computer but not online it would not be as bad.
There is a lot of sick **** online and a lot of creeps. A lot of disgusting pages or videos. Perhaps this sounds lame in the ears of a young person but I too was playing in the dirt and playing with Dinosaurs and watching cartoons when I was 9. If I had access to the internet at 9 I don't know how I would have turned out.

That is actually kinda scary how kids are becoming now.

when i was a kid i played with a rock and a stick

sticks are cool.

The only way to save the toy industry is to pull a small soldier and put chips in the figures heads so that they come alive and wage war with there enemies. Now that is the toy of the future.

What I said was MOSTLY tongue in cheek. I really didn't take it personally :lol or get upset. Everyone has an opinion on how a child should be raised...and they will share it with you. Kids are kids and they are all different. No matter what parenting they recieve, a lot is pre-programmed. My 2 children are polar opposites when compared at the same age. If anything, my son, who is younger, has recieved more "parenting" at this stage in life because my wife and I work primarily from home. He is mischievious and absolutely not to be trusted :lol. My daughter, at 2.5, was possibly the perfect child. Parenting will always be over and incorrectly analyzed because no one has a clue how to be the perfect parent for every (if any) child.

I think a major issue with toys today is they take a lot of the creative "juices" out of the children. Most of them talk, shoot out things or just...I don't know...are set up in a way to tell the child how to play with them. If that makes sense.

This really became apparent to me when I watch my son and his toys. He has no sustained interest in anything that makes noises, is out of scale, etc. He'd rather make up the story. I got him a Cars Pit Crew Mater and he won't touch it because of the damn headset attached to him. :lol

It's all about moderation. Do you allow your children to bury their faces in that instead of doing homework? When they're at the dinner table? Visiting relatives? Friday night we went out to eat and the table next to us personified that. Dad was on his cell the entire meal, mom was texting, the two boys had their faces buried in handheld game systems and the daughter, her tablet with earbuds in. Nobody even really talked except to order or ask for more soda - which they did rudely "Get me more soda" or shaking a 3/4 empty glass at the servers. I found that to be an extremely uncomfortable observation.

Yes, please. :D

Only to those who lack the patience to police it.

It does work well for those who lack the acumen to discern. They pick two arbitrary extremes that seem like reasonable limits that don't discriminate on the basis of IQ (lends obvious credulity for the credulous) and then choose an arbitrary middle ground. It's like having your hand held, while flattering with the illusion of independence.

A cute placebo, and good for therapy, but ultimately, meaningless.

I actually used my walkman when i was eating with my family because hearing people chew makes me uncomfortable. Always found it kinda gross :monkey3 Not even to mention when people start talking with a mouth full of food.....:monkey4

This is sad but true, kids no longer want toys, they want cell phones, computers, game consoles, and tablets. My 9 year old nephew got an ipad a nintendo ds, games, and remote contol car along with a bunch of other stuff, but not one action figure.

Oh well it really don't matter really I guess, except going to toys r us, walmart or target these days does refect this trend, toys on the shelfs these days kinda suck. Theres no more 12" gijoes or anything the like, its just ben 10, necas statues, and a few crappy marvel and dc figures. Not very interesting stuff if you ask me:dunno

During the eighty and nineys I would rarely walk out of those store without some kinda cool new gijoe or ultimate soldier, now I poke around once in a while and just walk out.

The demand for toys has dropped tremendously. All KB toy stores are gone. Toys R Us shares its store with babies r us. The only places to get toys now-a-days are pretty much walmart, target or toys r us. (Also puzzle zoo, but there prices are ridiculously high).

Demand has dropped because electronic toys are much more expensive and it takes all the money the parents have for gifts to get those.

The downturn in the toy market was underway before tablets, etc. were ascending. KB went down with the '08 crash, but they were already in trouble. Toys R Us has been crappy for years. It wouldn't surprise me if electronics filled the void left by Mattel, Hasbro, etc. It's obviously not helping, but it would surprise me if it was the fundamental cause.

Either way, purchasing power has been going to hell since 2001. Demand is by definition desire backed by the ability to pay and most markets have seen that drop off. Everything is contracting.

Demand has dropped because purchasing power has dropped.

Have to disagree on that one buddy. Iphones and Ipads are selling like hot cakes. If your argument is that everything is contracting, then toys are contracting worst than most other items. Toys have been in decline since before the 2008 crash.

Which is all, essentially nothing more than greek salad for, "I'm too busy to be held accountable as a parent." I'm surprised at your stance on this given you're employed in the service industry and have to deal with self-absorbed idiots on the daily basis (a result of this upbringing) who look at any outside human interaction as interfering with their daily routines and treat it as such.

I remember when I was younger and getting gift cards or money for Christmas and having to wait at least a month because alot of the toy aisles in stores were bare. Not anymore!
