Not exactly. Godzilla means something to Japanese pop-culture, in that the 1954 film, was one of the first post-WWII movies to serve as a "moral lesson" for the dangers of nuclear weapons - especially considering that Japan was bombed twice at Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

In comparison, King Kong didn't have any sort of great, nationalistic message, whatsoever. It just a movie about a big ape, run amok in NYC, and mankind's desire to destroy whatever they can't understand. So, in that sense, I don't believe that Americans are compelled to really have any sort of pride in King Kong.

In any case, I'm not sure how the new generation of Japanese kids would feel about Godzilla. But, if they're anything like American kids, they'd be more interested in music, fornication, and idol concerts, than taking an interest in their country's past (or let alone, movies that reflect moral messages about it).

That's what I'm referring to. The majority of the younger generation probably isn't into it. I'm sure there are exceptions, but generally they're the same as westerners. To think they live and breathe Godzilla the way a niche of fans does just because they're Japanese is plain naive. You can cite the significance of the original film all you want, but not everyone feels that strongly about it (or cares).

Essentially, your last paragraph. :exactly:

that's complete BS. talk about hating something for no reason just to hate on it............

those complaints are just ridiculous

Pretty much :lecture:

I kind of see where they're coming from, though. The original Godzilla was like a costume for a sports mascot, in that it was very bottom heavy. But, instead of slimming down the bottom for Godzilla 2014, they bloated up his upper torso and neck to match evenly out the proportions.

Personally, I don't think the new look is that bad, but he's just a really fat lizard now.
HE IS NOT FAT! He is big boned.

:lol but Thunder Thighs' legs are still phatter than this new Godzilla's, and the torso isn't bloated, it genuinely looks powerful.

yeah? sexy and thin as hell right? :lol look at those slim tights, so dreamy.

I wonder how he stays so thin.... :lol

Old Godzilla you mean... New Godzilla is nothing but protein and steroids.

Ugh... no wonder he doesn't have any bawzz... :slap

But, even though I think they could have slimmed him down just a little, I really like this design :lol. It's definitely my favorite one, out of all the films I've seen.

Those clips are all sorts of awesome. I love how Godzilla in the first clip just gets up and he's immediately ready to do battle.

Is Japanese pop-culture even relevant anymore? I can't think recall them having great influences on American cinema in recent memory.
In the anime genre yes its very popular but just not very loud as it use to be. Alot of people find that stupid music video offensive as its just another dumb stereotype of Japanese culture.
