I love the seriousness this movie is being taken with. It got me thinking about Godzilla 98, no one was afraid of him whatsoever. Even at some of his campiest points, Toho Godzilla could destroy cities and was something to be feared and respected, but Gino was treated like a pest and the only remote threat was the idea of a growing population, not even that one alone was capable of devastation.
It's funny - G98 was on TV here in OZ the other night, & I watched it on & off as I was going about stuff. It really was as you've described - an extemely poor effort all round. The premise was insulting to the original 54 film, the cast was irritating, the monster was uninspired to say the LEAST, & the Broderick / ex love interest arc was just as useless. The best thing about that film was the Jamiroquai song 'Deeper Underground'.

I honestly can't wait for this new film - everything looks excellent so far. :duff

Godzilla 54 is a very serious film in tone and image... Having said that it is not a scary film or intense film IMO. I would say it's a very depresing film. Most of the films impact comes from it's score and scenes of the aftermath. But I say that as a 42 year old american who was not around when the bomb dropped. But the film had huge impact on the people of Japan. As it should. It was only about 10 years removed from when the bomb was dropped. I am sure it still has an impact. But it's a film that kids can watch and not have nightmares over (the true meaning goes over their head). I will always respect the original but it's too damn depressing for it to be my fav G film.

This new one looks to have a very serious tone... But will it be scary? Doubt it. I don't know if Giant Monsters can ever be truly scary. It's just too fantastic. But it can be intense and exciting if they make us care for the characters.

If you want scary you'll have to wait for Paranormal Activity with a Godzilla ghost. :lol

PR Kaiju were not scary either.

I don't know if giant monsters are capable of being scary, even to a young kid

Its not beneath me to just admit that I want a quality giant monster movie with lots of bad *** monster vs monster vs military action.

If that's accomplished with the human story being treated seriously then more the better.

I thought Cloverfield had some very intense moments. But that film had a very dark tone also. I remember watching that film thinking "This is how a Godzilla film should feel"

Godzilla is not King Kong. It's a metaphor for our essence, philosophical treatise in the form of disaster movie.
Not some 2 hours ride.

Cloverfield is still my favorite giant monster movie (yes, over G54 and PR), this Godzilla is definately coming from that same mold, minus the shaky cam thankfully.

Its interesting to read what you say because thats how I feel about the film if your avatar--Jaws. Everybody who watched it in theaters always tells me how scared it made them of the water. But I watched that film since I was like five not once did it ever scare me (scariest part is when that dead body pops out of the wreckage) and ive never heard anybody my age or younger think its scary. But its still a suspenseful and exciting and I love the characters. I dont have to have nightmares about it to immerse myself in the horror or what is happening on film. Jaws is well done so its easy to immerse oneself.

So is the case with Gojira. The uncut Japanese version especially. Godzilla's landing on Odo Island during the typhoon is very eerie considering I feel, like Jye, that giant monsters are never actually scary. Of course it's going to be the aftermath and human reactions that make the film dark or not. Cloverfield had annoying characters and the one guy who tried to be Seth Rogan the entire time, but other than that it was a pretty serious film. The little parasites were the scarier monsters because they are quick and creepy and the hunting was more "personal". But the script, mood, score, acting, cinematography didnt touch Gojira's.

At the end of the day I expect this to be one of the more FUN Godzilla films. It truly can be one of the best as well. But to say its more serious or adds more horror than the first one because of a few read lines by Cranston is hyperbole.
