Bad *** Digest:

I've been iffy on Godzilla. I've heard some conflicted things coming out from behind the scenes, buzz that I can't quite reconcile. Is it a movie whose script was a mess and was barely salvaged or is it a movie that wisely focuses on Godzilla and makes the human story the backdrop? I've heard both (and when you think about it, depending on who you're talking to they're not irreconcilable positions).

But one thing is for sure: Godzilla will deliver on giant monster spectacle. The new trailer, embedded above, is crammed with stunning shots of mayhem and destruction and that without a good look at the main monster. The trailer does give you the most fleeting of glimpses at another monster that Godzilla will fight - you can see his batwing-like leg for a split second - but it largely holds back the main man. Even so, everything else it shows is great. The jets falling into the water, the smashed Statue of Liberty (the Las Vegas version, it's worth noting), the flares against Godzilla... wow! And he's ENORMOUS.

The other cool takeaway: this is a direct sequel to the original Godzilla. I like that, although you have to wonder how they kept that attack on Tokyo a big secret in 1954.

A sequel to the original? I don't know, what makes them think that? Is what Bryan Cranston talking about in 1954 where godzilla attacked Japan and they said it was a natural disaster? I guess that could explain the giant skeleton, it could be the original godzilla. This could be more interesting than I thought if that's true.

He was really far away, it looks like maybe it was a shot from inside a bunker or something as they close the door with Godzilla off in the distance

Had to be. He just looked so focused on that woman's face so it made me think he was right in front of them lol.

Even though I agree I don't think it'll detract from the over all movie. I'm not sure if it's the CGI or the angle of the shot but they did lack a certain epicness to some of these shots. But what really matters is it seems the tone of the film has been nailed, nature is sending a message and we have every reason to fear for the future of mankind. The Muto also looks like it's going to be freaking awesome, did anyone notice it looks like it's leg was glowing in that shot towards the end?

It'll probably be polished a bit more as well before release. But I'm going to really like the story of this I feel. It'll be interesting to see how they tie into the original. Especially with Serizawa in this film as well as the original. Maybe he's a junior or something lol.

From the leaked script details, it sounds like Godzilla should get significant screen time and rather early on in the film as well.

Did the scientist say that they weren't nuclear bomb tests, they were trying to destroy him in 54.

Yes, they did. According to the leaked script, he was seen by the Japanese islanders several times but never got to Tokyo though as the Americans nuked him as you see in the trailer.

Soooo....the events of Gojira didn't happen then. He never attacked Tokyo. And the Oxygen Destroyer didn't kill him I guess? Or maybe it killed one (hence the skeleton) and then they tried to nuke this one. Or they woke this one up. I don't know...

So many possibilities!!!! I can't wait, the mystery is half the fun if you ask me.

I though it was too cheesy, felt like watching a trailer for Emmerich's movie.

The glimpses of the monsters definitely made me feel the same. When the spines came out from the water underneath I had horrible flashbacks of an old man fishing on the docks saying "today could be my lucky day".

But the human cast brought me back to reality.

But we shall see. I hope we're both blown away.

I'm optimistic though. They are at least treating the character seriously. It looks better than most of Toho's recent Godzilla films anyway.

1. Yes, and it's beyond stupid
2. US bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945

I'm not sure where you got that, I got the impression it was japan that was bombing him in the 50s trying to kill him, not the US. Japan is the one covering him up.

I don't think they're tying this in with the old movies. Seems like that part with the nuke will be a back story to this Godzilla but will not play canon with the original in any way.

I really enjoyed the look of it! The feel and atmosphere especially! That simply rocked! :rock

I have complete faith in this project now! The pacific testing was to kill it?! Neat! Hail to the KING!!!! :bow
