The more I think about this, the more I love it. I got to thinking about the idea of the X-Men, and their existence is very much one of optimism and hope for a better future for mutantkind. I guess, more than anything, it's the idea that they're focused on life; on living a peaceful coexistence with humanity, and those ideas of wanting to be accepted for who they are, and for their gifts; I think those ideas sort of define Logan in a tragic way. Like Xavier says, "I gave you a family," and, in some ways, I think that's the worst thing you can do for someone like Logan; getting them to recognize their humanity, and what's so ugly and beautiful and compelling about this movie is how someone lives with the things they've done, once they recognize that they're not an animal, and that they're a person, with feelings and needs.

We view the unbridled carnage unleashed in this movie in a sort of repressed way. We're exhilarated because this is a side of the character that we, previously, were unable to see, due to the limitations of ratings or whathaveyou, but, perhaps the greatest thing about the violence in this film is the degree to which it defines Logan's identity.

That line at the end about having to live with yourself, where Laura tells him and herself that "they were bad men," and he responds with "all the same;" that says so much about him. That, at some point in his life, he tried to justify himself in exactly the same way she is, now, and it didn't work. That's what makes that Shane monologue so poignant, as it truly cuts to the core of who Logan is and the idea that this was only ever going to end one way for him.

I was so pleased with the ambiguities this movie was comfortable dropping that I would hate to see any specific followup. I do agree though with your opinion of that element. :rock

I actually agree wholeheartedly. I was kind of using that to illustrate that they were compelling enough that they could have their own story, but I like that the movie left you wanting more, and, as you said, the ambiguity of it.
The notion that you're following their journey from Logan's perspective and, as such, when he dies, the part he plays in how far they've come comes to a close, and where they go from here is sort of up in the air.

Just saw the film.

It's very good.

It's true that the trailer doesn't show everything, but there were a few things they didn't need to show.

Overall, good acting (Jackman was...scary), good action that Jye will hate :lol, good story, and I really liked the girl.

The ending was a bit predictable, but still fun.

I've heard people say that the film is a drama with little action and that it doesn't feel like a comic book movie, but I don't feel that way.

It has plenty bursts of action...or graphic violence and it felt like a comic book film, just not an MCU film. Feels very much like a Fox Men film, but with less mutants.

8.5/10

Just got back from seeing it again, I don't know what I was thinking last night, maybe I was exhausted but watching it today left me with an almost entirely different feeling that I had yesterday. I thought the movie was very good, and it was a very fitting end for Hugh Jackman and the character.

I still think the movie isn't perfect, but it certainly delivered, I'm raising my score up to an 8/10. I do think X2, DOFP and FC are better movies overall though.

I agree with you about the action, but I also would say that it's a drama, primarily. For me, what separates them is that the violence and action in this film is in service the story, and the story isn't built around certain set pieces. You look at something like CW, for instance, or, really, even BvS, and you see the concept art and you can just tell that they're trying to come up with a reason for these characters to fight. I don't think there's a singular action sequence in this film that wouldn't directly impact the story.

Yeah, I agree.

Two small things that surprised me, which has nothing to do with the quality of the story...but still spoilers...

1. Evil Wolvie was scary. I had no idea Jackman had that in him :lol

2. The girl's Spanish was so good and natural. It always bothers me when people speak a different language in movies and it sounds fake.

1. Yeah, X-24 was ****ing ruthless, and it was tragic and brutal when Charles is at his most vulnerable and trusting and that **** goes down.

2. That's probably on account of her actually being Spanish.:lol I was curious about that, myself, after I got out, as I was like "she can't be Spanish with a name like Dafne Keen, can she," but, yup. Dad's an English actor, which explains the name.:lol

You can't do that.

:lol :lol :lol

I don't know why, but I enjoyed it so much more today.

My score is lower but this sums up how I feel about the film.

This movie has a very "The Professional" vibe...

There's definite similarities to Leon but its actually closer in story to Shane & Unforgiven.

The Marvel Studios disciples will be bored outta their minds during most of this movie because its focus is on character and not action. And when the action kicks in, its not cool or fun. Its violent and depressing. Good people die brutally because that's what happens in the real world.

I really liked X24, and when he first shows up like a Terminator, it was a surprise and scary....however, this is the element that made the ending predictable. When they escape and make it to the safe heaven, X23 asked Logan about the silver bullet...and at that very moment I knew that's how they were going to stop X24.

I had forgotten about the bullet, until she asked about it. It reminded me of the auto pilot from The Dark Knight Rises, but that film threw so much stuff at me that I forgot about the autopilot and the ending worked for me. However, in Logan, because it's such a specific thing and the only thing that can stop X24, it was impossible for me to forget. I'm not sure how else they could have done it. Still, I do like the silver bullet imagery which relates to the wolfman, and the idea that something he created to kill himself end it up being the girl's salvation, but it's the one thing that made the ending a bit predictable.

I hope this does well, and not just for the few who appreciate this type of film, but that it catches on with the ADD crowd as well.

MCU would be far more interesting if they saved their regular formula for their overpopulated "Avengers" epics and scaled down their "standalones" to be smaller stories without the new character "test-drive" moments and handshakes to other verse-films.
