The fact that it only resembles something smart.
But hey, I'm just reactin' to your reaction. I only see a bunch of lazy ass pics and nothing more.
ARGs are smart? It's just following clues.

But where are all the mutants? Doesn't that make you think?

Usually when people call art "pretentious" they don't understand it.

So no point in arguing with them.
Well, "pretentious" has become a pretty common misnomer in geek culture, that is true.

Usually used as a wildcard when someone doesn't know how to express their dislike or, as you say, they plain just don't get it.

I don't think there's anything to get here though, it's just a pic with an ominous message, I don't see what's so harmful about it personally.

If this is some kind of meta pointin' at the fact that X-Men are in Hell aka 20CFox... then it does, yes. And again, I have nothing against these dumb black and grey pictures. :lol

That pic is the only one I like so far. I'd like it if they all had that kind of cool detail or hint.

But it's all freebie non-advertising that you can either engage with or not.

Eh, you can use the "you don't understand it" argument for pretty much everything. Sure, sometimes the whole "it's just pretentious garbage" phrase is overused, especially when folks don't get the underlying messages of a work of art, but here, it's just... pictures. B&W pictures that have little to nothing to do with a Wolverine movie. This last one has an ominous tone, plus, it fits with the X-Verse, so I like it, but all the others? Nah, they're just artsy advertisement. Just because something is different, it's not automatically brilliant.

When anyone uses "pretentious" by default I replace it by either "I don't get it/I don't like it" until they prove it's actually pretentious, most times they don't, it's just a convenience rule, like nowadays the "literally" is silent. And you can't use the "you don't understand" for everything, you'll look stupid unless the interlocutor has actually shown he doesn't understand.

But yeah in this case they're just pics, are stock photos really any worse than ****** ass PSd posters done by interns?

WHERE ARE THE MEMES?

My sentiments exactly.

2011 was a fun year for online film discussion. The Tree of Life, Melancholia, Shame, Drive, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Martha Marcy May Marlene, We Need To Talk About Kevin....

All of them labeled "boring and pretentious" by the people who were giving Cap: TFA & Branagh's THOR a 10/10.

Pretty much, yeah. "Pretentious" has been overused, but so has "kiddie". If you don't like something with a darker tone, it's pretentious. If you don't like something with a lighter tone, it's "kiddie crap". The fault lies with people, and mostly genre/company loyalists. While a Bay-Fan is annoying, the guy who walks around and slams everything to appear intellectual is ten times that. Kinda like the internet "scientists", you get me?

Memes have been banned. Memes are hate speech. Pepe is the new Swastiga or SS. Watch some news, man... No wonder you damn Millennials are always busy with your "keks" and your "filthyfrancisss".

I identify as a 35 Year Old German Baron with British roots, so all that doesn't apply to me...

Drive is the only one I like from that list :lol

What about Carnage and The Beaver?

What about Carnage and The Beaver?

The question ain't directed towards me but... I really liked Carnage. Mainly because of Waltz, but "boring" as it was, it was entertaining. The Beaver less so. I also loved Locke. It's in a similar vein, and Hardy kills it. Enemy is another "pretentious" film that's actually really good.

Is someone who uses pretentious incorrectly being pretentious?

Is anyone who calls someone a hipster actually a self-resenting hipster?

Best films of 2011:

Sucker Punch 10/10
Breaking Dawn Part I 10/10
The First Avenger 10/10
Thor 10/10

Everything else: Pretentious crap
