Well when you guys are waiting, I'll be watching the regular version in prestine Blu-ray, I'll let you guys know how the quaility is. Can't Wait. Woooooooooo.

It's the Lucas method of capitalism - squeeze 'em for all they got! IMO, the upconverted EEs look fantastic and I'll probably stick with those... Would be nice to be able to watch them without changing discs though...hmm...

Yeah, not right at all.

It doesn't seem like so much of an obvious money-grab/double-dip to me. They did this before with the trilogy on DVD. It's the same release pattern. They released the theatrical versions first but they let us know the extended editions would be on the way later. So we could select which version we wanted. I wanted both so I bought them both. (I prefer the EEs but both versions have elements to recommend them.) I didn't feel ill used by New Line, it was my choice.

Hey, we all know the Extended Editions are coming. Either next year for Christmas or the following year right before the first Hobbit movie opens. I think it's great to have a choice.

When I get steamed is when studios don't tell you they've got multiple versions of a DVD planned and then try to fool you into buying it half a dozen times.

But I'm really excited for the EEs on BluRay because Jackson has been talking for years about doing a Super-Duper-Ultimate-Spectacular release with all kinds of material we haven't seen yet. Way more stuff than the existing EE versions. Which seems impossible to me, given the sheer volume of stuff on those DVDs. But they claim they saved all the biggest, best and coolest behind-the-scenes and deleted footage for that eventual release.

And based on the joy they've given me so far -- I regret none of my LOTR DVD purchases -- I have no reason to doubt their word!

I understand this, but there has not been any formal announcement that there will be another release. That is the problem. (or am I wrong), only speculation as it seems the natural course. :sick

Not a problem so much as maybe a design. The studio can create a "What if the EE's aren't released?" kind of fear. Of course if I'm wrong and they don't release the EE's, this release will be going for some serious coin on eBay in the future. ;)

Oh, thery're coming! No question! The EE's sold EXTREMELY well on regular DVD, so fear not. NL/WB may not have officially announced them yet, but they'll definitely be here.

As for the lack of official announcements, I wouldn't take that as a bad sign. They didn't officially announce the Blu-Ray TE's either to my knowledge. I think they just popped up on Amazon one day. (But I could be wrong about that.)

Anyhow, the EE's may not show up right away, but they're most certainly coming. I'm guessing they'll be released either next year for Christmas or the year after to fan the flames for The Hobbit.

(I also wouldn't rule out some kind of "Tenth Anniversary" theatrical re-release of the trilogy into select theaters to help whip up the fan base for the new films.)

Jackson has been talking about putting together a Super-Fantastic edition of the trilogy for years, complete with LOADS more extras than we've already gotten. And it would seem to me that the Blu-Ray release of the EE's would be the perfect place to do that. Best picture quality, best sound quality, coolest and most comprehensive extras ... seems like a no-brainer for the definitive "kitchen sink" edition.

But that won't stop me from buying this TE set in the meantime! Must have it! :monkey5

Heck, I suppose now I'm going to have to buy a Blu-Ray player, too ...:duh

I don't see too many people rushing out to buy this when they know the extended ones will be around the corner. The first time around people bought the original releases on DVD because we didn't know how much more awesome the extended versions were going to be. Now we know and wont settle for less. But I am sure that there will be some that will be inpatient and pick them up.

Oh, I don't know. I think these will sell just fine. I've met plenty of folks over the years who weren't nearly as into LOTR as I am ... people who enjoyed the movies but prefered the shorter Theatrical Editions. Much as I love the long versions, apparently not everybody needs a 12-hour version of the trilogy! (10 is fine, I guess!)

Different strokes for different folks.

I, for one, am glad that they're releasing both versions on Blu-Ray. Choice = good! That way, everybody can get what they like!

Well, at least for me the LOTR EE really revolutionized home viewing to begin with - I don't think I had even heard of such a thing before their release; now it is almost commonplace.

I will probably get these ..... sucker. :angelsmil

No interest in the Theatrical versions, especially knowing that the EE version will be "extra special". I can wait for the EE, just as I did with the DVD versions.

Plus, the EE version is THE definitive version for me. Watching the original now appears heavily edited.

Blu-Ray = overrated. (sure it's nice, but it's not the jump from VHS to DVD like some people make it out to be IMO) I'm fine with my EE DVD's till.......Well for a long damn time.

I'll wait for the ultimate boxset. Have to be smarter than those guys!! otherwise they'll take every penny out of us.
