I'll buy both editions. The EE versions are just too long to watch. I need the day off for that. So the regular versions come in handy. Plus I'll watch the regular editions then the EE next year when they come out. A good span between the two.

Mrs. Took and I recently got a new TV, 47" Phillips 1080P!! :banana

We dont have a Blue Ray player yet, though.

We were coming off an old 32, big ol TV - What a huge difference!

We have not gone back to Middle Earth yet since we got it though - as I want to watch all 3 EE, and just havent been able to set aside the time, what with 2 young Shirelings and all!

I cant wait though!

Get the bluray player, and watch the upconverted EE's. You will not be disappointed. I have made this my Thanksgiving tradition, with last year being the first time I watched them all back to back. It was a blast and they looked fantastic. Great enough until they are finally released on bluray. I have already bought two sets of these films and do not intend to buy them four times, but I will get the EE's when they finally arrive.

:D

Yo Fury!

Do you mean get an upconverting player now, and the BR later.

I was a little hesitant about "upconverting". Granted, I have done NO research on the matter, but I figured - Its read only media.......how much better could it get.....

Does the upconverting player really make that much of a difference.

I figured I would hold off on BR until burners and media come down a bit.

Took!

I think he means get a BluRay player (like a PS3) that will automatically upconvert your DVDs.

:wave

I'll buy both as well. Not trying to start an argument or offend anyone who has a different opinion, but $70 for the Theatrical Editions on Blu-Ray is really nothing in the grand scheme of things. That's a night out, or heck, a week of buying lunch. I purchased the Theatrical Editions on DVD, then the Extended Editions, and then the Special Editions that contained both the TEs and the EEs. While realistically I can wait for the EEs on Blu-Ray and upconvert the regular DVDs on my Blu-Ray Player/PS3, the collector in me will probably want all editions.

I haven't really been following the news on this, but what is this blockbuster edition that has been mentioned? I know that there is additional footage that wasn't added to the EEs for whatever reason; any chance PJ is thinking of adding this footage?

Nope, just spring for a bluray player. Mine upconverts and I'm sure most of them do. The trilogy looked so good, many times during the screening I mentioned that I was in no hurry to have bluray editions. It just looked great.

Yep!!! :D

I wish they would have just gone with the Extended Cuts from the start. Any true enthusiast that is into BluRay would want them.

It's the Lucas method of capitalism - squeeze 'em for all they got! IMO, the upconverted EEs look fantastic and I'll probably stick with those... Would be nice to be able to watch them without changing discs though...hmm...

It doesn't seem like so much of an obvious money-grab/double-dip to me. They did this before with the trilogy on DVD. It's the same release pattern. They released the theatrical versions first but they let us know the extended editions would be on the way later. So we could select which version we wanted. I wanted both so I bought them both. (I prefer the EEs but both versions have elements to recommend them.) I didn't feel ill used by New Line, it was my choice.

Hey, we all know the Extended Editions are coming. Either next year for Christmas or the following year right before the first Hobbit movie opens. I think it's great to have a choice.

When I get steamed is when studios don't tell you they've got multiple versions of a DVD planned and then try to fool you into buying it half a dozen times.

But I'm really excited for the EEs on BluRay because Jackson has been talking for years about doing a Super-Duper-Ultimate-Spectacular release with all kinds of material we haven't seen yet. Way more stuff than the existing EE versions. Which seems impossible to me, given the sheer volume of stuff on those DVDs. But they claim they saved all the biggest, best and coolest behind-the-scenes and deleted footage for that eventual release.

And based on the joy they've given me so far -- I regret none of my LOTR DVD purchases -- I have no reason to doubt their word!

You have to remember that there are people who don't care for the extended verisons, so they'll appreciate these.

When the DVDs first came out, it was well known that there was going to be extended editions, so I just waited. I agree with Bucky that when they don't tell you is when to be upset. I've had this happen more times than once!

I am now watching the Return of the King after watching the previous two movies again in the previous two weeks and is anyone else really put off by the ^^^^ing horrible digtal shading in the movies?! Just light it properly and then film it, don't ruin the movie by having every characters eyes look fake in an important scene!

I'll wait for the EE's.... I haven't watched the Theatrical versions in years and I don't intend on doing it any time soon, I'll just think about what I am missing. :lol

Some of them are fake though. Liv Tyler, Orlando Bloom and Elijah Woods all wore contacts to turn their brown eyes blue. I think that always looks fakey.

Yeah, Elijah Wood has real life anime eyes. Completely unnatural looking, but they are really that big and blue. I think he did wear regular contacts though for the normal reason of having bad eyesight.

And Orlando Bloom didn't always have the color lenses in. There are some scenes where his eyes are his own natural dark brown which I think looks about a million times better than the fake blue.

Well that still looks more lifelike then obvious digital effects in people's eyes, like being way too bright. Like Theoden at Edoras when he is talking to Merry and Gandalf at Helms Deep when he is on top of that hill with the rest of the principal actors. They took that crap waay too far!
