For me, the big reveal last night was when Eloise told Desmond to stop pursuing Penny, as "that wasn't part of the deal" they had made. She was presumably talking about a deal made with MiB/Locke, which resulted in this "alternate" (but not) timeline. The pieces are slowly falling into place...

Awesome episode last night. I really feel that Eloise knows everything that is going on and somehow is the same person in the real world, sideflashes, and Desmonds time traveling. But how is that possible?

Also, anyone else feel we will see the death of MiB all Marvel's Venom-like with using that giant EMP machine to blow him to pieces?

... I already exploded the bomb! :horror

Yeah I just about crapped my pants at that part. There definitely seems to be a nice build of momentum. I hope they sustain it with no more "filler" episodes (even the worst LOST filler is still better than your average TV fare).

Wasn't they guy from Short Circuit in the show before a few season past? I would swear it... what his name....

Fisher Stevens.

He was the crazy guy on the freighter that they had tied up in the hold.

uh... she never said that.

She said to Des "someone has clearly affected the way you see things" and that is "a violation". I can only assume this refers to Charlie Pace introducing Desmond to the knowledge of Penny, which originated which Charlie Widmore's peculiar insistence that Des babysit him. Widdy has shown Des the sideways world in the original timeline, and, presuming he knew Charlie Pace would show Des a flash of his "other life", Widmore was doing the same to Des in the sideways timeline. I can see Widmore's actions being the violation she refers to. It is cool to see Des on the hunt to unite both timelines. I don't think there will be a physical door, but it's feeling very Dark Tower-ish again.

But I agree her comment about Des having the perfect life does make it seem the sideways "happily ever after" world is the result of some sort of bargain. And I could see MiB or Jacob being behind such a deal. This whole show has been about choice and destiny. The 'Big Choice' sacrifice is coming around the bend, but is it a choice at all if whatever happened, happened? hmm.

Was that in the preview for next week?? I don't remember that.

I thought the most interesting part of Eloise and Des's conversation was that she said "You've gotten what you've always wanted, a good relationship with my husband" (or something like that). That directly relates to the other timeline where they had a horrible relationship.

Also, we've seen Des switch minds before. Could the Desmond that woke up in the stadium be the original timeline Des, and the one that woke up in the Island EM shack the sideways "Widmore is a cool boss" Des?

Absolutely loved the episode, Desmond episodes are so emotionally driven and fantastic. Don't know if you guys saw this but here are the names of the remaining episodes, thought it was interesting...

MASSIVE SPOILERS
Everybody Loves Hugo, The Last Recruit, The Candidate, Across the Sea, What They Died For, The End....the last two are going to be amazing

My quote wasn't word for word, but that was about the gist of it. Something along the lines of violating an agreement.

Cuse, Abrams and Lindelhof have already stated that the flash-sideways is NOT an alternate reality or parallel universe, that both storylines are happening in the same reality. If that's the case, then the flash-sideways must be either flash-forwards or behind. And considering how much is different between both storylines, one is obviously the catalyst for the other.

It's also interesting that everyone seems to have gained something in the other storyline, but also lost something important. Sayid was able to prevent Nadia's death, but he can't be with her. Jin and Sun traded a loveless marriage for a passionate affair. Locke seems to have a relationship with both his father and his girlfriend, but he still lost his ability to walk. And Desmond got the respect and admiration he'd always wanted from Charles Widmore, but lost Penny in the process. That's why it feels like some kind of deal was made between the survivors and someone/thing in power; presumably MiB/Locke or Jacob.

I guess we'll know in about a month and a half...

Fisher Stevens won an Oscar this year for his documentary The Cove. I remember being surprised seeing him go up on stage to receive the award.

And George seems like he might be more than just a limo driver. That's just the impression I got.

I'm starting to believe this as well. Maybe Widmore strikes a deal with MiB or Jacob and was able to "reformat" the timeline at a specific date. Maybe there's a glitch (Desmond can see both timelines) until the deal is made on the island and once that point is reached, only one timeline will remain (season finale). If that makes any sense at all.

Matthew Abaddon is to Ben Linus as George Minkowski is to Charles Widmore??

So the bomb needed to go off to create the Alt timeline. But it also needed to go off to complete the 'current' timeline. So this Sideways verse 'always' existed...? It happened parallel to the timeline we watched up until I suppose the 'eventual' merge. It's by no means 'new', we just weren't shown it yet.

So did we watch the merge happen without realizing it? Is there going to be an event from the first few seasons that we'll now look at differently as an 'aha' moment? It doesn't make sense (to me anyways/yet) that the 2004 alt timeline and the current 2007 timeline would merge in 2007. Wouldn't it happen parallel to each other?

OR will the 'merged' timeline be ANOTHER alternate? All 3 would run parallel to each other.

I've always pictured it as a river flowing around a stone. It's still the same river though it has forked.

'Always existed' probably depends upon your perspective.

SH, Abbadon was an agent of Widmore killed by Ben. Though Abaddon and Minkowski were both drivers to Locke and Des respectively.

By 'always existed' I meant since the bomb went off.

From what we 'know' these Flash Sideways were occurring 'during' the original timeline (meaning Season 1). We just have been shown then until now.

WHAAAAAAAAAT?!?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!

You pick this episode to say that?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

I was starting to tire of it until this episode! The Sideways flash is finally starting to come into focus. God, it was so freaking awesome!!!!! :rock :rock :rock :rock :rock :rock :rock :rock :rock :rock

Well I figured they didn't just have the sideways reality for the hell of it. I knew it would play a part. My problem is right now it makes no sense whatsoever. Its like they've just tossed people into the mix and tied them together however it worked. I don't know if that makes any sense.

Now if they have some point not yet revealed where all the interconnections (is that a word?) makes sense I may change my mind, but right now it just doesn't make enough sense to be satisfying.

Henry Ian Cusick sheds a little light on last night's goings-on in an interview here

-Desmond woke up from the sideways knowing what needs to be done, and following Sayid will help him further his goals. He's trying to prevent people from dying.

-Fans shouldn't be concerned with how Eloise knows what she knows.

The way he answers the question about the sideways universe definitely makes it sound like both timelines are real, and the Losties will have to choose which one they want.

Is Ellie acting out of selfishness? Does she not want Desmond to succeed in collecting the 815ers and showing them the glimpse of their other lives because in that reality she killed her son and in the sideways one Daniel is alive? Seems to fit with everyone trying to protect or get back to their loved ones.

Interesting stuff:

• The producers hope to bring Walt back. It's just that the actor who plays him, Malcolm David Kelley, is much taller now. "We are actually working on a way to try to bring Walt back before Lost is all said and done," Cuse said. Want to know how he'll come back? "He'll be riding on the Hurley bird," joked Lindelof.

• Did Jacob really have a list? Not necessarily. "The idea that Jacob had a list that he furnished to the Others or to Ben is up for debate," Lindelof said. He suggested that Ben Linus (Michael Emerson) might have just invented the idea of the list to get Jack to operate on him.

• When asked if we'll find out what happened to Rose (L. Scott Caldwell) and Bernard (Sam Anderson), Lindelof said slyly, "In which timeline? We already found out what happened to Rose in sideways. We might be seeing Bernard in sideways." Will we see them on the island? The producers declined to say.

• When asked to describe the final three episodes in one word, Lindelof said, "Water."
