Wow.... kinda surprised with what i'm taking to be rather lukewarm reactions to this episode. This one was KILLER for me!!!!!!!!!!
So much to discuss!!!! Where to begin???
Illana is gone. Saw it coming. Girl, you can't just throw water bottles all willy nilly, huffy puffy like that into a satchel loaded with unstable dynamite and not expect to go the way of Arnzt (great reference btw). It was her time, and I had really enjoyed her character actually, but yes, it was time. But the great thing that came about due to her death was Ben's wistful interpretation of what had happened, and what implications it had for everyone still living: The Island was done with her, and so she died.
We are at the end, we know death is coming, but the characters can feel it too. I just love the implication of this coming from a character to other characters. But much more important stuff to discuss....
The Whispers.... yes, they are the "ghosts" of all the souls that the Island has acrued throughout the decades (centuries!!) all stuck there. I'm assuming that most came from within the Others after Richard formed that sect of people and so it makes sense that those souls would continue to accompany their still living brethren as we saw them do since season 1. And no, I didn't find this lame, perhaps a tad simple, but not lame.
I loved the Hurley/Libby stuff. I love that it harkened back to Libby as a mental patient and the most interesting kind of mental patient in fiction is the totally sane person that can't convince anyone else of this fact, including themselves. I loved where their story went. I loved all of Hurley (and that's a lot of love!) in this episode. I will admit, when it opened on a slideshow of Hurley Love I got very scared that we were going to be given a "Hurley Dies" episode... thank god that didn't happen! I love where Hurley's character went on Island, kinda making good on his new role this season as someone who is actually listened to! And I love what this really served... it served as a device used to get Hurley and Jack to talk about WHY Jack hasn't been more proactive (i'm guessing we've seen the last of passive Dr. Shepherd after tonight!!). I loved their discussion and I love where they have brought Jacks character this season and I feel that we're only JUST getting to the real goods.
And now onto the BIG things: DESMOND
God this guy is AMAZING.
Ok, so first, what he and FLocke talked about atop the well really put the whole Sideways World into idealogical/spiritual perspective for me. Whatever the Sideways world turns out to actually be, or not be, there is not denying what it is to Desmond currently. He's been there, he's seen it, felt it, lived it. He knows its out there, and now, he is opporating as a devout man of faith, firm in his belief in an afterlife (HOW GENIUS IS IT THAT HE IS THE MAN THAT IS GOING TO FACILITATE CONVERTING ALl THE OTHERS INTO BELIEVING IN THE SIDEWAYS WORLD... HE A MAN WHO WAS KICKED OUT OF A MONESTARY!!!! AGHHHHHH.... Head Go BOOM!). He told FLocke of his peaceful demeanor... "Why would I be afraid?" (or something to that affect)... Desmond knows there is an afterlife. He knows Penny is there. He knows there is happiness beyond the life he is living, so if the worst that can happen is he goes there... then bring on the worst. Wow.... i'm not a religious person, but I am a spirituatl person, and I love the discussion of religion and its effects on we the living, and to see this show that I've loved since day one be so bold, daring, brilliant and insightful without EVER getting preachy or embracing one brand of religoius thought as its allegorical jumping off point is such a treasured reward!
And just when you thought bringing the two camps together.... Putting Jack face to face with the image of John Locke for the first time since Jeremy Bentham visited him in the hospital (and atop the Orchid station before Jack left the Island before that) is SOOOOO great!!!! These two have been the pillars of what the show has been, the embodiment of opposing thought... and even though now it is Jack and FLocke, the roles they occupy are the same, just now on a much grander scale (if of course Jack is to replace Jacob as we are clearly lead to believe he will). Can't wait! But THEN, we get that coda.... Desmond outside the school. I love that he laughs off Linus' suspicion. I could hear him saying after the fact "Ha, you think i'm some kinda child molester Brutha?? Are you nuts? No, I'm not spying on your wee school children mate, i'm just waiting for that disabled lad in the wheelchair to cross the street so I can run him over in my car. Don't worry, the kids are fine Brutha!"
And what of that hit and run? I believe that Desmonds role here was no different than what he himself experienced, or what he facilitated between Hurley and Libby. He understand he needs to "awaken" all the survivos in the sideways world that he can, and for whatever reason, he believed the best way to wake up John Locke was to cause him to recall the feeling he had when his father pushed him out the window, breaking his spine. John had no love on the Island other than the Island himself... no mere kiss or handshake could bring back those memories. John needs to remember the emotion most potent in his real life: pain. He needs to recall how awful his father was and what he did. He needs to recall waking up being able to walk. He needs to remember the Island. And where is he going now? To the hosptial i believe... along with Sun and Jin.... where Spinal Surgeon Dr. Jack Shepherd will be waiting.. will Charlie still be there?
And OMG.... the promo for next week looks AMAZING. Is Locke going to be "The Last Recruit". Is he somehow going to be awoken and will his conscience make the leap from Sideways to Island world??? What will that mean from MiB??
AGHHHH SO GOOD! Sersiouly, this episode was amazing!
