So apparently Charlie was seen by the other inmate. Maybe Charlie is "transitioning" through time, sort of like Desmond?

Oh yea, I forgot desmond did that. Jeez, the things you forget. I think charlie was all in his head and the crazy guy that saw charlie didn't really "see" him. after all, he was nuts

Good point! Maybe the creepy lawyer dude was staring at him, thats what the inmate saw and Hurley thought it was Charlie?

I was wondering why the island "cured" Locke after he was shot, but not all of the Dharma people that were gassed??

I also am now starting to think that Jack's dad is far from dead as well. The last "Missing Pieces" episode (which is Vincent and Christian Shepherd-centric) shows the first few minutes before the "Pilot" episode begins. I noticed that ABC hasn't posted it on their website yet, but Verizon users were able to access it. Here's a transcript of the episode:

[We see the jungle and hear someone running. The view is low to the ground. We hear panting. It’s Vincent. He passes open suitcases and sniffs them. He hears a whistle. We see legs. It’s Christian. Vincent runs up to him. Christian talks to Vincent.]

Christian: Hey there. Come on. Come on. Come on. Good boy. Come on. Come here. Come here. Good boy. Yes. [He leans down and pets him.] I need you to go find my son. He’s over there in that bamboo forest, unconscious. I need you to go wake him up. Ok. Go on.

[Vincent whines and runs off.]

Christian: He has work to do.

[We see Jack’s eye open just like the beginning of the pilot. Jack wakes up slowly, looks around, sees Vincent come through the jungle. Vincent whines, runs by him, and runs off. LOST black screen.]

:rock:rock:rock:rock:rock

So you can argue that everybody there is linked to Christian Shepherd

Also remember the first episode of Lost, the beginning starts with Jack waking up and running through the bamboo. He passes a sneaker hanging in a tree and the camera zooms in on the shoe. That shoe is Jack's fathers shoe.

This is from the DVD commentary.

Maybe creepy inmate is the new "Dave" who is really in Charlie's head, and Charlie's appearance was something more than an illusion--maybe the island has established some sort of connection with Hurley and is attempting to communicate with him off-island in the same way that it has used the images of other people (often dead) to communicate with receptive people on the island. Future Hurley's unique mental situation is causing him to be the only one of the Oceanic 6 receptive to such attempts to communicate, which is why he is the only one who can help "them" (them being the other survivors still on the island). I think we will get at least one other Hurley flashback in which he will get the message that the island wants him to hear, and his assignment/purpose will be clearer.

My worry is that something climactic happens that passes the obsession with this mission on to Jack. If Hurley clearly presents this to Jack and Jack brushes him off, followed by Hurley's death, then Jack's guilt might drive him to finish the work that Hurley wanted to accomplish. Hurley is beginning to have the "we need to go back to the island" obsession, and when/if Charlie gets through to him again in a future flash forward, that obsession will kick into full swing. I just wonder what it will take for Hurley to pass that obsession on to Jack and then vanish from the picture by the events of the season 3 finale flash forward. Hurley would have been the more obvious one for future Jack to contact if he wanted a sympathetic ear for his "return to the island" venting. But maybe by that point, Hurley is gone, and Jack has to talk to Kate. It would also be interesting for them to kill off Hurley because as one of the Oceanic 6, the audience now thinks Hurley is safe because he made it home, and nobody would be expecting to lose him.

Hmmm. So are you saying that maybe Hurley was in the coffin??
Jack told Kate that they had to go back after he went to the wake? But then again didn't the obit clipping say that the deceased had left behing a son??

The producers have repeatedly confirmed that Jack's father is dead. The theory that he is alive is one of the more durable rumors/theories out there, and they have been asked the question many times. They don't often give definitive answers, but they have in this case. He's dead, just like Charlie and Eko's brother Yemi and Ana-Lucia and Boone--all of whom appeared on the island to other characters in visions after their deaths.

Now, if the smoke monster or Jacob or Walt's telepathic abilities or whatever else somehow involve projecting the appearance of Jack's dad, or even reanimating his corpse, then he will be seen walking around the island. But it has been confirmed by the producers that Christian is dead in the traditional sense (and that anyone who really dies on Lost will stay dead), and that we will also continue to see him on the show.

After talking about all of this, my wife suggested that Hurley was in the coffin. However, Jack was already obsessed with returning to the island before reading that newspaper article, and I think that Hurley was likely out of the picture by then.

(My best guess for the body in the coffin is still Michael, who gets off the island with Walt--but not as one of the media celebrated Oceanic Six, and therefore remains unknown to the public. And the producers might also change the contents of the article--we freeze framed it searching for clues, but freeze framing Desmond's picture of Penny in the hatch when we first saw it revealed a different actress because the part hadn't been cast yet. The picture was revisited with the retroactive change when the production process caught up with the plot point that had been prematurely dropped into the background as a hint. It's possible that the contents of the article--which wasn't meant to be seen closely and studied word for word in the course of normal viewing of the show--could be changed by the producers when it comes time to give it their full attention and a proper reveal to the general audience. The producers know that we are going to freeze frame things like that, and won't throw in a totally random prop, but they also don't have a problem adjusting it down the road when it's time for a closeup that we are "meant" to see.)

I had to work on a paper last night and didn't get to watch it, so I tried to tape it. But I just went to watch the tape and instead of Lost I got Coach, Drew Carey, and Ellen from 1997. :monkey2 Anyone know if there will be an encore presentation?

How about the person in the rocking chair is "christian shepherd", but it's a manifistation of him. Like jacob wanted a father figure or something and got christian shepherd. Maybe jacob is really jack's brother and wanted his "father"...I know, I know, it's a stretch

You can watch it on ABC.com. It sucks, but what you gonna do?

I had an epiphany during lunch. Now, want to take a stab at who's in the coffin? Someone with no friends or family. Someone who Jack feels responsible for in more ways than one. Someone who would completely break down if he ever left the island and would do everything in his power to not let that happen. But when was forced on him, he'd probably kill himself...thus ending up in a coffin at the Hoffs/Drawler Funeral Parlor. Who could it be?

LOCKE

Thanks for the reminder Shropt! Now I can figure out what y'all are talkin' about. :D

BTW, the "nut", who told Hurley that "someone is watching you", disappeared when they cut to a wide shot...so even that guy might be in Hurley's head. Maybe just a gag to throw you off at first.

No. He wouldn't leave the island alive as far as I am concerned. He is the only one I'm 100% certain won't leave the island. He likes it there. Only way he is leaving is in a body bag.

Good theory though, but just doesn't feel right with his character to leave.

Here's the eye from last night's episode compared with Jacob's eye from season three. Looks like the same eye/actor to me. And it's clearly not Locke as there is no scar. https://bp3.blogger.com/_n3eH1jI8AZ8/R6KXy3XEgXI/AAAAAAAACA8/cc_K-J-AafM/s1600-h/jacob-4x01.gif

The scar is on Locke's other side, but yeah, I think it is the same guy. But the scar is fake afterall so not having Terry with the scar makeup would only throw people off further (he doesn't have it in the flashbacks).
