It looks like we might get 5 more episodes for this season. And more episodes for next season.

As for "Lost," exec producer Carlton Cuse said he and fellow showrunner Damon Lindelof would meet with ABC brass today to hammer out the plan for the rest of the season. They won't be able to finish the remaining eight segs of the show's planned 16-episode season -- five is a more likely number -- but they will be able to craft a completed storyline for the remainder of this season, Cuse said.

Here's the complete article. It also has news about how other shows will be coming back.

"We're going to try to make as many as we can and do a good job of finishing out this season," he said. "We'll have to compress some of the storytelling we planned for this season, and that may not be a bad thing. Damon and I feel like we know how we can finish it off and still make it a really, really great story."

The compressing the story part is what really interests me. It sounds like they will still tell the same story with probably the same planned cliffhanger finale, just tell it in 5 hrs instead of 8. We shall see. Hopefully it won't show in the finished product and feel rushed. They definitely could've tightened up the storytelling in the first 6 eps of last season. This season was already going to be shorter than last and now really short. The 13 episode DVD season 4 set will look odd sitting along side the rest.

season 1: 24 ep
season 2: 23 ep
season 3: 22 ep
season 4: 13 ep?
season 5: 19 ep?
season 6: 16 ep?

Sounds to me like they will try to get a few more shows to end out this season and then call it a day. Season five will probably still be just 16 episodes.

(Season one had 24 broadcast hours of episodes, seasons two and three each had 23.)

Lostpedia lists season 3 as 22 episodes

"And whatever segs are not produced this season will be picked up down the road in the show's remaining two seasons, Cuse said."

I'm not sure if this refers to story elements or actual episodes that will be added to seasons 5 & 6. Since he was referring to episodes as "segs" earlier in the article I took it to mean that we will still get the same number of episodes/hours of Lost that they had originally planned on, just moving them to season 5 or 6.

EDIT:
The DVDs list season 1 as 25 hrs long
https://lostpedia.com/wiki/Lost:_The_Complete_First_Season_(DVD)
season 2 as 24 hrs long
https://lostpedia.com/wiki/Lost:_The_Complete_Second_Season_(DVD)
and season 3 as 23 hrs long

I am easily confused. I think I misread the episode guide.

Have all the season finales been two hours? Now I can't remember...

That's really good news!!

Yes, all season finales have been 2 hrs or 85 minutes without commercials.

Apparently the season 3 finale is broken into 2 episodes (#22 & #23) on the DVD whereas season 1 and 2 finales are listed and play as 1 double length episode each.

Wikipedia is my friend. Kinda like my pensieve. :D

OK, it looks like iTunes can clear up my confusion, lol.

They are selling 25 episodes of season one, including the two hour pilot and the three hour season finale. (Exodus, Part One was one hour long, and Exodus, Part Two was two hours--weird.)

They are selling 24 episodes of season two (including the two hour finale), and 23 episodes of season three (again including the two hour finale).

My confusion stems from the fact that sometimes the episode guides refer to a two hour show as one episode, and sometimes as two (with a part one and part two). So however you count up the number of episodes, if you go by actual broadcast hours you get 25, 24 and 23.

I hope that when they agreed on 16 episodes per season for the last three years, that included a two hour finale each year (giving us 17 hours total per season). I'll take every hour I can get...

I'm so with you Tom. I'll be really bummed to see this show go. I haven't had this much fun watching a show since season 1 of Carnivale (season 2 petered out to nowhere) and before that Twin Peaks. Episodic fantasy is rare on tv these days, even rarer when it's done well. Battlestar Galactica and much of the new Dr. Who kick ass. Heroes is ok, but the season 1 finale and almost all of season 2 were just 'meh' and misdirected. Hopefully this break will help Kring get that sucker back on interesting dramatic rails, but it will never be as engaging as Lost has been.

The second season of Heroes was good, but it didn't fully live up to my expectations, taking off from season one and lifting it to new heights. It felt at times like more of a reset in terms of plot and pacing, and really took too long to get going.

Lost has been a show that has managed to keep getting better, in my opinion. Their one misstep was the little six episode pod at the start of season three in the fall, which hurt the momentum. They should have just waited and aired the whole season in the winter/spring.

It's hard to do a serialized show and do it right. Each season of 24 is enjoyable on its own, but the entire series doesn't add up to a larger overarching plot the way that Lost does. It feels more like an extended mini-series that is telling one big story over the course of multiple seasons.

Interesting!

I understand that episode eight is a Michael flashback. So maybe his big reveal/return will come at the very end of episode seven, and episode eight will pick up the story and give us flashbacks of what he's been up to since sailing away from the island.

I just realized that Lost is going to be on at the same time as The Office.

:banghead

Thank goodness for my DVR. I will just have to record one (The Office) while I watch the other (Lost).

For me they're both on when I'm waiting for the newsletter. :monkey2

Lost is moving to 10pm after Ugly Betty and Grey's Anatomy. Is the Office also at 10?
Seems kinda late for airing a comedy. I thought it came on at 9?

According to this, the last 5 (now 6?) episodes start at 10:00 in April. Did you read that it's moving to 10:00 sooner than that?

And why is The Office moving to 10:00? It's always been on at 9:00... I think.
