Nice game and I;d say that if it ended 1-0. I'm not a Pujols fan, but McCarver and Buck are railing on him for what I think was a minor impact on the ball in the field. Molina wouldn't have thrown Andrus out at 2nd anyway it was a crap throw from the field way off line and no where near a cut off man.

Nice to see the series stay close.

pujols took his eye off the ball and flat out missed it...it was a catchable ball that would have held andrus at 1st if he cuts it. while the throw wasn't perfect that's a play pujols makes 999 times out of 1000. it was a major impact IMO

Yeah, he was paying attention the Andrus and missed it. Its those little plays that make a difference.

Maybe Pujols was out of position to begin with, but the throw was no where near where he was standing, so he had to run about 20 feet towards the mound and try bend over and catch the ball way out in front of him.

I say the fault was more on the throw than Pujols. I'm not even sure whether it's Pujol's job to stop that throw. Where was the 2nd basemen? Pretty sure Pujols was supposed to be on 1st base to prevent Andrus from taking a wide turn. Maybe thats what Pujol's real mistake was.

He touched it but he had to come across the diamond all the way from first. He wasn't already standing there.

I don't know if he is supposed to be at the pitchers mound. If take the 1B too far from the base you basically allow the hitter to round 1st base as far as he wants...which made it easier for Andrus to advance on a very minor mistake.

Here is how I would have thought the infield should play that hit.

P-moves to back up home.
SS-covers 2nd
2nd acts as cutoff near the mound.
1st stays at 1st

The ball was recovered in center very shallow and probably would have nabbed Andrus at 1st base if he circled wide and Pujols stayed there.

I think I convinced myself that it is Pujol's fault, but NOT because he failed to catch the ball but because he should never have been there at all.

No, the first baseman goes to the pitchers mound to cut off a bad throw past 2nd who goes into the outfield to be the cutoff man.

Not on a shallow hit like that. The ball didn't even go 250 ft. Why would they need an OF cutoff?

not that it matters, but i played 1st base all my life and it is your job to head to the mound area on that play...your job is to listen to the catcher telling you to either make the cut or to let the ball come to him.
