Re: The Man of Steel

Actually, it's not a bad comparison in terms of what is at stake. The villains have very similar goals in the two films. But I certainly cared more about Superman than Shia La Barf.

There is a level of destruction and collateral damage in Man of Steel that surpasses Transformers and Avengers. You have a clearer sense that yes, the bad guy is going to destroy all life on Earth. But again, I wasn't made to care quite as much about Superman in everything leading up to the action.

I am going to watch it again and see how my reaction is after a second viewing.

I know they're totally different movies, but was it more rewarding and gratifying than IM3/TDKR for you.

Re: The Man of Steel

The preview screening I saw was 2D. I have seen trailer 1 & 2 in Imax 3D and the 3D looked very poor, in a post-converted type of pop-up way. The only thing that looked truly 3D were the logo's! Don't know if that's an indication of the final quality or not, but I fear it is. Gonna check it out again on saturday in Imax 3D.

Thanks. Going to do IMAX non-3D. I'm very happy they offer that in my town.

So that he can safely climb down to their level. :wink1:

When viewed in the context of the review, that statement really doesn't make sense. The bar indicates that a standard has been set, and it has been set high, therefore, you would not be climbing down to reach it, otherwise, there would be no reason to refer to it as a standard/bar, if it were lower than another bar.

Re: The Man of Steel

Well the only real negative comment I made a few weeks ago was too much CG. I stand by that comment. You just lose interest after 20 mins of virtual devastation. No matter how good the FX.:(

From everything that's been said, it's action for the sake of action without the build-up of character development. Avengers had a build-up since 2008. Superman... what... 68 minutes of meh? If he's going to compare it to Avengers and even Joss, he needs to understand the basic foundation that the MCU laid before the film. Sure Avengers was action for the sake of action, but we'd already been well introduced to those specific versions of the characters beforehand. This is Supe's "first" outing, so that's an unwise decision. Especially given this is supposed to lay the foundation for a united DC cinematic universe.

This isn't Supes' first outing, though. We've seen the origin before, and we've seen character driven stories before. I just find it funny how the thing people are now complaining about is the thing they complained about the previous outings lacking. If they'd have taken it in the other direction, people would've *****ed and said that there wasn't enough action. I'll wait to see the film before I make up my mind, though. I do find it hilarious how some reviews are saying it can't decide if it wants to be a "deep, dramatic story" or a "blockbuster action movie." I just wonder who told this person that it had to be one or the other.

...This is his first outing? Last time I looked, he'd had five prior attempts to fully engage moviegoers, of which perhaps two were successful.

This may well be #3. Instead of complaining, comics fans everywhere should be rejoicing that maybe, just maybe we might have a new franchise to watch. We could have ended up with another Green Lantern of Fantastic Four. We didn't: yay.

This is not a zero sum thing between DC and Marvel. I love the Avengers too, but I like things that keep my attention to look forward to, be they DC OR Marvel. There is room in my heart for both.

People wanting endless "character development" can go watch The Walking Dead, which started out really well but last time I checked, had devolved into endless arguments in dusty, dilapidated rooms. Boring. I can see that kinda thing at work, in a less dusty environment even. I want to see stuff I *don't* see every day, i.e. paranormals trouncing each other all over huge urban areas. Is that so wrong....??

Re: The Man of Steel

I want to know just one thing all these people who are knocking this movie how did they judge Iron Man 3 because I had to check my watch during that movie that's when I knew I was not feeling it and I thought... :snip:

Yup, that was me too. Holding up my watch and squinting into the darkness. Its not ever a good sign.

Re: The Man of Steel

Man, it seems like all the critics hate this movie...Whatever, I'm my own critic and I'm prety sure I'm gonna enjoy it..

Let me specify, since you need it spelled out. This is THIS Superman's first outing. This is a reboot, an "origin" flick. It all re-starts here. No previous Superman films are relevant to my post. Is that clear enough?

Yeah, you don't see people referencing the Matt Salinger Captain America as part of the "buildup" to Avengers. :lol ;)

Re: The Man of Steel

Yeah, I get that, but my point is that, even though this is a reboot, it's not like people haven't seen a Superman film before. They have, and I've heard countless times that they want to see Superman hit somebody. Yet, now, they complain that he shouldn't, and that they need to decide what kind of movie it should be.

Except that, other than those cheap 70's movies, that was the only Cap movie made, and it never even came out in theaters. Superman, on the other hand, was the star of a series of serials in the 40's, a popular television show in the 50's, four theatrically released films (two of which were good) through the 70's and 80's, a television show throughout the 90's, another television show throughout the 00's, as well as another major motion picture, not to mention the countless animated interpretations and the overall reverence in modern pop culture. Bottom line:Superman has had way more exposure than Cap did.
